Men’s XV News

13112022 Leinster League Division 1B Athy 28-12 Longford

The initial stages of the game were a close affair with the play staying between the 22s.  It wasn't until the latter stages of the first half that saw some scores!

A scrum, from a crooked Athy line-out, gave Longford good go forward ball.  Longford worked the ball to the line.  With Athy giving away another penalty, a quick tap ball saw Kieran Gorman cross the line for the first score.  Athy 00-05 Longford

Longford quickly had to defend from the restart. The clearance kick saw Athy work the ball across the pitch to score.  With the wind with them the try was also converted. Athy 07-05 Longford.

Longford were caught once again from the second half kick-off.  A  clever kick through saw Athy cross the line for their second try.  From there, Athy just got stronger, and good go forward ball from the restart and they crossed the line once again to leave score at Athy 21-05 Longford. Thereafter, Longford lifted their game somewhat and carried well from a line out in the 22 and Benny McManus crossed the whitewash to close the gap.  Athy 21-12 Longford.

Longford were then awarded a penalty inside the 22.  A quick tap and go play saw Longford carry well but Athy defended excellently to hold up the ball.  Further good carries from Longford forwards, Benny McManus, Kieran O’Gorman, and Podge Farrell, saw Longford gain territory but Athy defended well  and managed to keep Longford at bay.

At the half way point of the 2nd half. Longford had some good possession in attack, but  they just couldn't convert this possession into points on the scoreboard, and on one occasion a very good maul was held up!  Athy made the best of another Longford mistake to run in another score.  Athy 28-12 Longford, with 10 minutes remaining.

With Longford under pressure, a good steal from Podge Farrell saw Longford clear their line.

The last ten minutes saw Athy put Longford under serious pressure, but Longford worked hard to defend.  Longford were awarded a penalty in final minutes. Some great carries followed from Seamus McKeown and Benny McManus again, but the Longford men just couldn't convert to points.  Final score Athy 28-12 Longford.

2nds XV Match Report Athy 21-23 Longford

Diarmuid Masterson kicks a penalty for Longford

From a penalty Longford scored on 23min to go 00-03 up. Just after this, a classy chip & catch, the ball went out to Cormac McDonagh to score a try on 24 mins.  Athy 00-08 Longford. A subsequent penalty on 38 min made it Athy 00-11 Longford.

Eventually a try was scored by the home side on the cusp of half time.  The Athy forwards managed to rumble off penalty and score, with the conversion kicked  bringing it to 07-11 at the break.  On 60 mins a penalty to Athy got the hosts within 1 point.  Tom Gilheany then crashed over after a great dummy penalty move to score a try on 65 minutes put Longford 10-16 up.  Cormac McDonagh then scored a try off Tom Gilheany intercept on 72 mins bringing the score to 21-23 after the successful conversion off the touch line.

Match Report U16 Girls Longford 53-22 Wolves

Longford U16 Girls welcomed Wolves to CPL Park Saturday last.  Longford opened the scoring with an impressive display of speed by Pilar Heck. The tries continued throughout the game with a closing try from Andrea Nolan, giving Longford a final score of 53-22.

Longfords Forwards were dominant in the scrums and Line Outs with Lucy O Connor winning a number of opposition ball in the air.  Longford’s defence was exceptionally strong throughout the game.

The girls worked together and put on a super display of Rugby, working hard as a team to bring each try across the line.

Longford team; Ava Horkan, Shauna Hannon, Maria Costa,  Anna O’Connor,  Aoife McVeigh,  Niamh Brady, Isabella Larkin, Mia Rowan, Andrea Nolan, Pilar Heck and Amber McGrath.

Scorers; Pilar Heck (2) Mia Rowan (3) Andrea Nolan (1) Isabell Larkin (1) Amber McGrath (1) Ava Horkan (1)

Next Game: Kilkenny Away on Sat 19th November.

U16 Boys Tullamore 12-05 Longford

Longford contested well and took possession after the start and were putting together good phases in the opposing half of the pitch. The attacking intent continued and on 8 minutes Shane McGuigan crossed for Longfords score.

Longford kicked well into the breeze to prevent Tullamore from yielding too muck possession in the wrong area of the pitch.  Longford were pinged however for continuous penalties and when the eventual conceded try cam, Longford were luck not to be reduced to 14 men, such was the number of penalties against them.

The second half was very similar arm wrestle to the first with both sides not yielding territory or possession too cheaply.  On one occasion when Longford did kick the ball unnecessarily it resulted in the score that decided the game.

Longford can be proud of the performance on this occasion as, just last year, the result in the corresponding fixture was a 40-point loss. The improvement in the Longford lads has been impressive and, on another day, they may just have shaded the game.

Scorer: Try- Shane McGuigan

Longford: Tadgh McCauley, James Cosgrove, Ryan Spollen, Conor O’Grady, Danny Kelly, Harry Byrne, Daniel Corr, Shane McGuigan, Mel Mulligan, Senan Murphy, Dan Donohue, Tom Murray, Darragh Walsh, Donnacha Golden, Jonathan Groenewald, Niall Connaughton, Aaron Hopkins.

Schools Rugby

Ardscoil Phadraig 34-19 Moyne CS

Well done to Ardscoil Phadraig Junior boys rugby squad who secured a 34-19 win over Moyne Community School on Friday last.

Longford RFC regular, Ryan Spollen and Mullahoran’s Tiernan Flood accounted for the Ardscoil Phádraig tries while another Longford RFC man, George Burns, was in brilliant kicking form from the tee. Another Longford RFC regular, Tadhg McCauley, was also immense in his role at tighthead prop throughout, continuing in a fantastic vein of form for both club and school.

The school wish to thank Daniel McHugh, from Longford Rugby club, for his dedication and support in continuing the development of rugby in the school and also our own PE Department for their work and enthusiasm towards providing an ever expanding programme of sport for all students.

Boot Room

Parents - Why not check out the hugely popular Boot room here at Longford rugby club where we have a self replenishing stock of replacement boots.  You drop in a pair you no longer need and replace it with a pair that fits your child. That way your pair of boots doesn’t go to waste and someone else gets to benefit also, thus also helping someone else save a few Euros.

If you have any boots that you wish to donate or exchange, please bring them into minis training and drop off the office for the attention of Gerry Carty or Pauline Marlowe who will assist with selecting the replacement pair.  Boots should be clean, laces intact and no missing studs.  No blades will be taken in.

Please note it is not possible to guarantee there will be a suitable replacement available however we have rarely not had some to choose across a wide range of sizes.

International Comment

The Autumn international series continued over the weekend.

Fiji were the opposition in a lacklustre game at the Aviva, that failed to excite despite the 5 tries scored in a 35-17 win.  Italy were unlikely victors over Australia, who will be hurting as they visit Dublin next week.  SA went down to France in a keenly contested match however yet again it’s the coach who steals the headlines with yet another online cut at the officiating team, a nasty habit that the powers should deal with.
