Senior Men

Leinster League

The J1 and J2 matches versus Carlow were called off due to the passing of one of Carlow’s Past Presidents.  The match will be refixed for January 26th instead. Longford’s first match of the season will therefore be at home to run away league leaders Monkstown.  As pointed out last week Longford have five matches remaining and everyone will take on the nature of a cup final starting with Monkstown.  The league might have looked a lot different for both sides had Longford converted a last minute chance to cross the white wash and plunder a win from Sydney Parade.  However, instead Longford are now focusing on securing second place and a shot of promotion and are in an almighty scrap for that place with Tullow and Carlow.  It will take Longford’s best performance of the season to turn over a Monkstown side who have won all their matches in the league to date despite a few very close shaves, one being versus Longford.  Its still all to play for and it starts on Sunday in CPL Park.

This is a potentially season defining game for both the J1/J2 sides and we ask as many of our members, supporters and friends to pack out CPL Park and get behind the lads.

Match Reports

U18

Longford U18s lost out 7-0 to Portarlington in a close fought Leinster league game on Saturday past. Conditions were not conducive to a game of running rugby, leading to an arm wrestle of a match, with Longford failing in the last play of the game to rescue a draw.  The next Leinster League game is versus Kilkenny at home on February 1st with more games to be fixed before then.

U16

Longford U16s put in a great performance in really tough conditions versus Kilkenny, with the first 15 minutes seeing brilliant wet weather rugby.  Longford scored seven tries to Kilkenny’s two.  Gavin Courage Foynes scored a hatrick. Ronan Columb Smith, Cormac Casey, Josh Osabuhien and Kevin Byrne all dotted down for a try each with David Keenan kicking three conversions. Next up is a home game against a tough Arklow side at home.

Longford play in the RDS

You can watch a short montage video on the great day by clicking on the picture below!

Longford Mini/Youth Players had a day to remember yesterday when over 200 Players/Parents travelled to the RDS to support Leinster in their 42-14 win versus Lyon in the Champions Cup.  Our U12s also has the privilege of playing at half time and gave a great account of themselves and the club.  The day started early with the Longford posse climbing onto their bus fleet at the club resplendent in their Longford gear.  First up was welcoming the Leinster players to the RDS.  This was even featured on the Champions Cup Twitter Account!  Next up was meeting Leo the Lion and getting ready for the match.  Our U12s were in the zone for most of the first half and came out like Lions at half time.  A brilliant day was had by all.  Thanks for everyone involved in organising it.  No doubt we will be back for the Quarter Final and maybe even Semi-Finals.  Great value trips to watch Leinster are one of the great benefits of playing for Longford.  It is not too late to start we field teams for Boys and Girls right from U16 to U18.  We welcome new players at all age levels.  Talk to any member/coach or message us on Facebook/Twitter.

Longford CCRO Dylan Quinn featured in Leinster Program

Well done to Longford CCRO Dylan Quinn who was interviewed about his work in promoting rugby in Longford for the Leinster v Lyon match program.  The interview featured as a two page centre fold spread.  Keep up the good work Dylan!
