Senior Men at home to Carlow, Senior Women record big win, Mini/Youth Match Reports & Fixtures, Mini/Youth Fun Run Walk, Senior Men Competition result...

Senior Men

Longford Senior Men had the weekend off after recording a bonus point win at home v DLSP and a draw away to Tullow in their first two league games.  They welcome Carlow to CPL Park this Sunday for the next block of league games and will be looking to build on the encouraging display versus DLSP, although there are still a lot of improvements to be made despite the bonus point win.

Longford come into the game with a point to prove as their last match versus Carlow did not go to plan when they put in their worst display of last season going down 31-12 in Oak Park in the last match before Christmas, in a match where Longford never really got out of the starter blocks.  Carlow are a serious side and one that Longford will be giving plenty of respect to while concentrating on getting their own game right.  When Longford are on song, they are a match for practically any side in Leinster Junior rugby.  We would encourage as many supporters as possible to come down and support Longford in this crucial early season game.  The J2 side kick off at 13:30 and the J1 side kick off at 15:00.

Training continues Tuesday and Friday at 7.30 PM, with new and returning players particularly welcome.  We would particularly welcome players from last year’s U18 panel.

Match Reports

U16

Longford Under 16s made the long journey to Kilkenny on Saturday where they faced the home team in terrible weather conditions with wind and constant heavy rain. There was lots of handling mistakes understandably but a win away is always good with the final score line 27 12. Two tries from Lolu Adejinmi and Gavin Courage Foynes with Eoin Murtagh also scoring. David Keenan converted one. Another debutant with Ali Iqbal showing real talent and appetite for work. Next up is a Midland league match at home to Edenderry.

U14

Longford Under 14’s welcomed a strong Clane side to CPL Park on Saturday 5th October for Longford’s first home Leinster League fixture of this season.  It was a damp morning and the going was soft.  The focus for this developing Longford side was to getting the structure right and to maintain good ball retention. The game started with Longford being on the back foot but they kept composed and tacked relentlessly holding out a well drilled Clane side until the 15th minute, when the Kildare side went in for their first try.  One this damp day there where a lot of knock on’s so our scrum was quite busy.  This area played quite well and won all their scrums and even took one or two against the head.  However, Clane got another quick break and broke through again and went in close to the posts to have Longford 12 points behind.  But with the Longford lads taking the bit on their teeth and, unlike in other games keeping their heads, advanced into the Clane half with the forwards rucking and mauling well and made their way to the Clane 22.  A quick move out to the wing caught Clane off guard and Alex Forde presented the ball well, the ball was flashed back to the midfield where there was a rare defensive gap in the Clane line to allow the forwards to bundle over.  This left the score a half time Clane 12 Longford 5.  Longford offloaded the bench at half time with fresh legs coming on from Patrick Murphy, Wayne Armitage, Ryan Sheridan and Oran Lyons.  Unfortunately, Fionn Crossan with have to wait a little longer for his debut as we just need to get the admin work complete.  The fresh legs helped and the lads slotted in well.  Clane kept pressing but Longford defence was solid. But the side in red and black, who would be one of the favourites in our group to make it into the premier grade, were starting to get on top and the defensive work was taking its toll with some of our experienced players, Dairmuid Glennon, Sean Molihan & Ciaran Heffernan, taking knocks and having to be replaced.  With all these changes & players having to play out of position, we lost our structure and Clane went in for another try and towards the end of the game they went in a penalty try.   It just shows how important it is to have strong replacements and to have players versatile to play in many positions.  Final Score Longford 5 – Clane 26.  This was a great performance and we can take some pride in our defensive work & scrummaging.  There are plenty of work to be done, especially on our rack and ball protection.  We have a Midland League fixture at home next weekend against Roscrea.  I would like to thank Trevor Mc Hugh for coming out from the IRFU First Aid Course in the clubhouse to referee the game.  The Clane coach was very impressed by his fairness and the way he kept giving constructive instruction to both sets of players.  I would also like to thanks all the parents for coming in and giving support, providing food (Hot lasagne, hot dogs & gourmet sandwiches) for the teams afterwards and looking after all the tidying up in the Hugh Connolly Centre.  Training this Thursday as usual at 7pm, if there are no hurricanes, with Dylan Quinn in to coach ourselves and the Under 13’s on scrummaging techniques.

U12

Well done to the U12s on Saturday who played 3 great games; 1 loss, 1 draw and 1 win. Overall, a good day great tackling and we'll deserved tries.

U11

Well done to all players today. Four great performances, beating Mullingar twice, Tullamore and a tough contest against a very strong Birr side drawing 3 tries each. Great tackling, defensive and offensive moves by all players who should be very proud of their performances. A great bunch of lads. Keep it up.
