Longford are pipped at the post by league leaders Wicklow RFC in away thriller

Match report by Mark Quinn at Ashtown Lane, Wicklow

After 2 successive wins to close out 2022, Longford RFC made their way to league leaders Wicklow RFC on Sunday past with serious intent to get 2023 started in similar fashion. Wicklow beat Longford in the earlier home fixture this season by a single score and the squad had an appetite for revenge in the away fixture. Sunday’s proceedings did not disappoint those in attendance.

In fresh conditions, the game started and both sides set down markers for the events to follow. Longford carried hard at the imposing Wicklow defensive line and the hits were not for the faint hearted. Longford’s shape was much better than earlier in the season – there was a very clear plan with the system beginning to really click. Possession exchanged between both sides and as a contest Wicklow were under no illusions that they were very much in for a tough day at the office.

Both sides cancelled each other out until the 20th minute when a period of sustained Longford pressure was rewarded with a penalty on the Wicklow 10 metre line. Ryan McHugh stepped up to calmy slot home the opening 3 points to give Longford a deserved lead midway through the first half. Unsurprisingly, Wicklow reacted and launched several waves a hard-running rugby that took all of Longford’s effort to keep at bay. Worryingly however, penalties started to pile up against the visitors which took all the earlier positive momentum away. Longford were defending for their lives as Wicklow launched multiple attacks deep into the Longford half.

On one break away, the Wicklow attack surged towards the line under the Longford posts. The initial drive was just held up, only for the second phase to be halted by what the referee adjudged to have been a tackle off the ball by the covering Kieran O’Gorman. Another penalty was awarded under the Longford posts with O’Gorman shown little mercy by the referee who displayed the yellow against Longford’s talisman. From the resulting penalty Wicklow got in for the opening try of the match which was converted. Score 7-3 to Wicklow.

Longford defended valiantly for the next 10 minutes as half time approached. Despite the 1-man disadvantage, the Men in Black competed ferociously with Benny McManus, Ali McCormack and Tom Gilheany in particular laying their bodies on the line to dispel the Wicklow onslaught. With only a minute left in the half, Wicklow showed why they are top of the league with a clinical move wide that seen their winger get in at the corner for another try. This was superbly converted to give Wicklow a 14-3 lead at the break – perhaps an unfair reflection on what was in truth a much closer 1st half.

Longford were restored to their full compliment as the 2nd half got underway and it was the away team who got out of the traps much faster. Mark McHugh at hooker made a superb line break from just inside his own half and carried for 25 metres before being caught by the retreating Wicklow defence. Longford were quick in support and managed to retain possession before launching another series of incisive phases. George McDermott spotted Daithí Connolly free on the right wing on 47 minutes and swung a long, precision pass that Connolly collected to slide in at the corner. The difficult touchline conversion was missed, but the scoreboard was corrected somewhat to 14-8 – its was now very much game on.

David Geelan had a superb game in Second Row – and is seen here rising highest as Longford laid siege to the Wicklow line

Longford could now smell an upset and went for the jugular. Every Wicklow attack was contained with fierce determination, resulting in several, crucial, hard worked turnovers. Player/Coach Henry Bryce was introduced and began to make his mark via several signature carries in the Centre that kept manners on Wicklow and as importantly kept them guessing. Longford varied their play with Colm Glynn pulling the strings from Outhalf, supported by intricate back play through Danny McHugh and Daithí Connolly in particular. Finbarr McGowan was at all times on the front foot and his passing from the base was laser like every time in getting an ever-confident Longford backline moving.

Longford had a great opportunity shorty after to score central to the Wicklow posts which would have resulted in a more straight forward conversion. Longford launched multiple phases at the Wicklow line and were inches short on several occasions. Alas, the Wicklow defence held firm and, in the end, won a frustrating turnover from Longford’s perspective to give Wicklow an exit that they were lucky to earn. Longford needed to remain calm and go again. Time was starting to wind down against the visitors.

But this team is resilient and back they came – all the way into the Wicklow 22 via a penalty to touch. It was a Longford lineout, 10 metres out with only minutes to go. David Geelan rose highest to secure possession and Longford set an aggressive rolling maul at a beleaguered Wicklow pack. Wicklow collapsed the Longford maul with the offending player shown a yellow card. Longford had 2 minutes and a man advantage to now seal the deal. David Geelan repeated the previous feat and again Longford mauled hard at the Wicklow line. This time the maul kept it shape and momentum for Mark McHugh to crash over, 5 metres infield, on 78 minutes. The difficult conversion was however missed and so we entered the final play of the game 14-13 behind.

Alas, it was not to be on this occasion. The game ended shortly after and a very relieved Wicklow sunk to their knees in exhaustion having bravely fended off a superb overall Longford effort. For Longford, it was a case of what could have been. The team played with real heart and commitment within a very smart game plan that so nearly delivered what would have easily been the shock of the season to the other teams in the division. But this would have been no shock to Longford – they believed from the outset and fronted up. This level of performance must become the new normal as it will translate into crucial victories as the season enters the final crucial months.

“To dare is to do” – this Longford side have surprises up their sleeves yet. Onwards to Mullingar at home next Sunday in a crucial local derby, the result of which will be pivotal to the League comeback that is still very much on the cards.

Your support at the Rugby Club next weekend would be greatly appreciated by all involved at LRFC. A superb contest is in store for those who come to roar on the Men in Black.

Wicklow 2XV V Longford 2XV

Longford Seconds travelled to Wicklow for the first game after the long Christmas break but didn’t realise the holidays were over for the first 20 minutes, by which time the hosts had racked up a 17-point lead. The visitors put away the decorations and decided to get back to work and should have crossed the whitewash but were held up.  The half time break brought some clarity to the structures and and Longford put together some lovely phases of play before Matt Gray crashed over with Robbie Shaw adding the two. The Longford men doubled their try tally with move good play with Lolu Adejimini powering over.  The Wicklow men broke up the right before switching back to the left catching Longford short of numbers.  Rioch Farrell worked really hard to stop the attack, but the hosts scored too easily off the ensuing scrum.

A great kick chase by Jamie Preece saw Longford awarded a penalty deep in opposition territory with quick thinking by Jimmy Mimnagh leading to a try by the Dromard man.

Unfortunately, Longford coughed up the ball while in attack and Wicklow took full advantage to add another 7 points on the final whistle. Wicklow deserved the victory, but we made it too easy with the poor start. This is something that will be rectified.

There were some fine performances with Brian Hanley, Ivor McCormack and Kevin Rodgers showing up in the pack while Jack Finnegan and debutant Daire McManus were the pick of the backs.

Match Balls presentation

Longford Rugby mens teams were delighted to accept a generous contribution from Seamus Butler, Managing Director of Butler Mamufacturing Services Limited.  Seamus kindly presented 10 match balls for the senior mens 1st and 2nds teams to Captain Danny McHugh, Director or Rugby Colm Glynn and Head Coach Henry Bryce.  The donation is much appreciated.

Longford v New Ross

Longford came up against table toppers and unbeaten New Ross in what turned out to be a cracking game of rugby on Sunday last.  Longford started well with some very well worked moves between forwards and backs which lead to Tegan crossing the line early with Emma Dardis converting to give a 7-point lead. Longford spent the latter part of the second half defending their 22.

Great tackling and calm heads saw Longford clear their lines on numerous occasions’, only for New Ross to attack again and again. Ross eventually broke the defence after a good scrum to see them cross the line on 30 mins to leave the score 7 points each.

A line out past the half hour mark saw Longford  attack but for New Ross defence put pressure on the Longford passing. The scrum clearance saw the visitors move back into the Longford half and solid defending was required to close out the first half.

The restart saw the play stay between the 22’s.  An infringement in the scrum gave the advantage to Longford.  They chose to tap and gained some ground.  Another Ross infringement gave Longford another penalty.  Longford seemed more determined in their carries. The hard work was undone on the Ross 10m line with a penalty for the visitors to clear the danger. With 2 evenly matched teams the game stayed between the 22s.  On 20 minutes, New Ross won a scrum against the head to put them back inside the Longford 22. Again, Longford defended well and forced a knock on. The efforts were undone by a ruck infringement and New Ross scored the resulting penalty kick to leave score 07-10 to the visitors.  Longford were awarded a penalty on half way after a New Ross scrum infringement.  Longford tapped quickly and again won a second penalty, chosing to kick this time, and the lineout was on the 22.

Longford were unable to capitalise on their possession and once again saw them defending in their 22.  A Longford infringement saw New Ross kick for the corner. A well organised maul from the lineput saw them cross the line to go 10-17 ahead.

With time running out Longford now had to make something happen. From a penalty, some hard running saw Leanne Keegan cross in the corner but unfortunately the try wasn’t converted.  With that time was up.

Final score Longford 12-17 New Ross.

With a losing bonus point secured, it puts Longford 4th in the table with 3rd placed Wicklow up next away, this was a very spirted performance and will give them confidence going forward they now have a weekend off before 2 very tough matches against second and third placed teams.

Longford: Jessica Stewart, Tara Gilna, Katie Lee, Dora Ledwith, Rebeka Stavuse, Marie Kellaher, Amanda Sheridan,  Megan Banahan, Emma Dardis,  Tegan Evans,  Leanne Keegan,  Leona Hoare, Rachel O Farrell, Michelle Mulvey, Rebecca O Hara,  Mary Sheridan, Amy Molloy, Roisin Shaw, Mandy Ryan, Samantha Mchale, Jasmine Smyth, Judy Starzynska.

U16G

Longford v Las Leonas

Longford hosted a strong amalgamation of Coolmine & Seapont Rugby clubs in the Leinster League.

Both teams put on a great display of rugby.  Las Leonas opened the scoreboard early on.  Ava Horkan returned fire for Longford, scoring off the back of the scrum.

Las Leona’s held a 12-05 lead at half time.

The pressure was on the homeside when the visitors opened the second half with another try.  Longford dug deep and fought back with both sides exchanging tries.

In the last few minutes Mia Rowan ran in from within the Longford half to reduce the deficit but alas, the visitors held out for the win.

Final score, Longford 20-26 Las Leonas.

Tries : Ava Horkan (2)Mia Rowan(2)

Players of the match; Team Captain, Isabella Larkin, and Amber McGrath.

U15 boys

Mullingar v Longford

Longford U15s hosted Mullingar on Saturday, coming out on the wrong side with a 12-19 loss. The match started with a fired-up Longford taking an early lead through a try from Conor Clarke.

Longford dominated early play and after prolonged pressure on the Mullingar try line, the ball was moved out quickly to Tadhg Rodgers who touched down through the Mullingar defence, putting Longford 12-00 ahead.  Mullingar responded well and got into the game more as the half progressed and just before the break, scored to go in Longford leading 12-07 at half time.

After the break, Longford found it hard to regain the early domination.  Both sides conceded penalties, and Mullingar capitalised for a try in the corner, to level at 12-12.

From the restart the penalty count from both sides stifled the flow of the game.  Longford regained their early dominant form and David Osinbucho made a bursting run through the visitor’s line but unfortunately spilled the ball.  From the scrum, Mullingar ran the length of the pitch to score and leading for the first time in the game with minutes to play.  Longford pressured for a quick response but with the final whistle sounding, Longford had to settle for second best on the day.

Final score, Longford 12-19 Mullingar.

14 Boys

Longford v Midlands Warriors

The team continue to build and progress with a great home victory over Midland Warriors.  Making use of LRFC’s great facilities they stayed out of the mud on a wet day on the pristine 4G pitch. They showed great character improving immeasurably from the trip to Carlow only a week earlier, especially in their defence and  breakdowns.

This great team performance from Longford saw a plethora of tries, to cap a 32-0 victory. Openside Brody Corcoran scored the opener, followed by a second from Conor Quinn Kelly whose running was a constant thorn in the side of the warrior’s defence. The 3rd try was scored by Scrum Half Ethan Neary, the 1st of his hatrick. Sam Elliot from No. 8 made big runs all match showing his prowess with ball in hand and got a deserved try as a result.

A total of 6 tries was only possible from the fantastic performances of ALL players from 1-22 even those returning and making their debuts for the club.

Final score Longford 32-00 Midlands Warriors.

Brothers in Arms

The McGowan brothers, Joe, Owen and Finbarr McGowan began their playing career with Longford RFC at a young 14 years old. In their U17 year the brothers enjoyed an unbeaten season, with the team led by manager George McDermott. The winning run went right up to the Leinster League final where they narrowly missed out by a few points.

Following this, Finbarr represented the Leinster U18 and Ireland U18 club team as well as Leinster U19s. The brothers made their debut for the Longford Senior team at 17 years old before togging out for UCD RFC and Pat’s of Drumcondra during their college years. They returned to the Senior team following college and Joe and Finbarr have played with them ever since. Owen played for Sharjah Wanderers in the UAE for a number of years before returning to the team. Playing together on the same team as triplet brothers is a unique experience – however they are not the only brothers playing together on the Longford team, with Geelans, McHughs and McCormacks also featuring sets of brothers in the squad.

They enjoy the camaraderie and competition of playing together. Joe cites the excellent club facilities at Longford Rugby Club as a sign of all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes at the club – the redevelopment of the club house and function room, the gym and brand new 4G pitch. Indeed, the brothers even had their 21st birthday party in the club function room. They strive to match the work going on behind the scenes in performing and getting results on the pitch with their team mates.

Youth Match Reports

U16 report Portarlington 24-10 Longford

The side returned to Portarlington for a rematch on the grading fixture where Longford failed to register a score. This time we started sprightly with a fine try from Jonathan Groenewald. This was followed by a good try from Ryan Spollen.  Both scores came in the first 10 minutes and there ended the Longford effort.  Portarlington started to get a foothold in the game with strong one up pick and go play and by halftime had levelled the score.  Despite pinpointing what was required the visitors failed to manage the game on the pitch in both defence and attack. Portarlington played barrow but we were too slow to protect the ball in possession and never got to take advantage.

Portarlington scored two more converted tries to finish the game at 24-10.  Longford had 3 new players on the field with Rahman showing some great agility on the wing and Gift Orbrehor making some nice tackles. Better for Longford we’re Ryan Spollen and Joseph Davidson but the poor effort across the park was a big disappointment.  Much improvement required next week.

U13’s Match Report

New Ross 21-17 Longford

New Ross kicked off into Longford with a strong wind behind them and the Longford pack were attacking from the first whistle.  Cian Mc Maguire worked the ball well between the pods, with Harry Clarke, Sean Lavin and Aaron Smyth making some great runs and breaking the line.

Cillian Ryan, Jack Smyth and Pearse Greene making great ground with every pick, they we’re unlucky to get a penalty against them inches from the try line.

New Ross fought hard to get the ball back up the pitch with some strong passages of play feeding their centre runners, Donnacha O’Reilly and Adam Mc Cormack making great tackles, but the pressure was too much and New Ross scored the first try of the day.

Following more strong running and missed tackles it wasn’t long before New Ross had scored another try.

The Longford lads were determined not to drop the heads, fought back to get what can only be described as a wonderful team try. Tomek Madej, Pearse Greene, Sean Lavin, Ronan Murray all making it difficult for the defense. After going through several phrases and the back line working it well, Cian Maguire feeding back into the forwards the powerful running of Cillian Ryan saw Longford score just before half time, they were unlucky not to convert it. At halftime the score was 14-05 to the hosts.

The second half Odhran Crossan kicked off and started as they meant to go on, with great defensive tackles by Donnacha O’Reilly and Aaron Smyth and lots of hard hits, from Gerry Connaughton, Luke Morgan and Sam Quintiliani. Serious work going on in the Longford team but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to stop the big centre running and speedy running by the wingers.

Substitution were made, Leon Clarke came on for Aaron Smyth, Sam Quintiliani, for Adam Mc Cormack, Luke Morgan came into the centre for Cian Mc Guire. Nathaniel Flood came into second row for his first game with Longford for Tomek Madej.

With the wind with Longford in the second half they used it well and used it to create and use our lineout moves. A clean ball from the lineout saw the pack move the ball inside New Rosses half and score a wonderful forwards try.

Longford were starting to believe they could do it and with the clock ticking felt the pressure was on. Attacking again straight away, scrum awarded to Longford on the 5, they weren’t going to be stopping taking into contact by the Jack Smyth, secured by the Ronan Murray and Pearse Greene, Aiden Quinn gave a quick ball out the back line to Odhran Crossan, Gerry Connaughton and making it’s way to Alex Kilrane who put it over the tryline for Longfords 3 Rd try. Alex also converted it.

Wasn’t to be Longfords Day but there is always next week at home to Blessington.

04/12/22 Leinster League 1B Longford 10-07 Cill Dara

By Mark Quinn at Longford Rugby Club

Longford, having got the crucial first win of the season last week against Dundalk, followed up with a narrow win in a very tightly contested tussle against a tough Cill Dara side on Sunday. This win was so desperately needed to continue momentum after last week’s win.  Unfortunately for Longford, the nearest rivals on the league table also won this weekend, so the result just ensured we maintained our position rather than gain or close the gap!

The boys have a break now until mid January when they visit table toppers Wicklow for another must win encounter.  Every game is now important given the position on the league table and the need to add more league points is as critical as ever.

Longford’s Mascots on Sunday pictured with match day captain, Benny McManus, were Tiernan, Odhran and Donnacha Murphy from Newtownforbes, who play for the Mini’s U6, U7 and U10 teams.

Muhamad Ali famously beat George Foreman in the 1974 “Rumble in the Jungle”. The bigger and more dominant fighter pounded Ali for the majority of their encounter, with Ali soaking up blow after blow until he smelt his moment to strike. The “Rope a Dope” strategy made so famous that night proved decisive as Ali delivered a late rally to catch his favoured adversary off guard and land the counter attack punches that delivered one of his most famous victories. And so it proved at Longford Rugby Club on Sunday, as Longford delivered their very own “Rope a Dope” strategy to stun a frustrated Cill Dara.

For context, Longford lost their opening league fixture of the season 18-12 away to Cill Dara in September. In what was ultimately also a single score game, both sides are in truth equally matched across the park. This Round 8 fixture was always going to be tight and so it proved. The match day squad was again tested via injuries from last week with several changes enforced. Most notable perhaps was the return of the timeless Colm Glynn back to Outhalf after his most recent retirement.

Longfords Alister McCormack rises highest to claim the lineout.

The first half was a drab affair with both sides essentially cancelling each other out for large periods. It was a classic slugfest with Cill Dara edging both territory and possession. After 13 minutes, Longford finally got their hands on the ball and managed to build a march out of their own 22 and into the Cill Dara half. Some smart phase play edged Longford to the outside of their opponents 22 when they were awarded a penalty central to the posts. Ryan McHugh calmly slotted the opening points to give Longford a 3-0 lead against the run of play.

Cill Dara piled on the pressure again and Longford spent much of the next period defending their line. After 10 minutes of determined aggression in the tackle, the referee pinged his whistle to award Cill Dara a penalty in front of the Longford posts. This was compounded by a yellow card that seen Longford reduced to 14 men. Discipline again was Longford’s enemy and unnecessary added pressure was gifted to a determined Cill Dara. It was the 28th minute and they decided to opt for a scrum, with their No. 8 carrying aggressively from the base. Although the first wave was thwarted, the second “pick & go” proved too much for Longford to keep out and Cill Dara were on the board. A successful conversion made it 3-7 to Cill Dara.

Longford really had to hang in given their 1-man disadvantage and did so admirably for the following 10 minutes before being returned to their full compliment. The effect was immediate, as the team finally started to get some possession and work their way into the seldom visited Cill Dara half. Some very tidy rugby through the backs saw Joe McGowan released on 39 minutes from just inside the Cill Dara half. After a brilliant angled sprint to the corner, it looked for all the world that he had made it only to be foiled by a superb last-ditch cover tackle by Cill Dara. This was the last act of an overall frustrating first half, but perhaps a late reminder that there is rugby in the team if they get the ball wide.

The second half began in similar fashion to the first with Cill Dara dominating possession and territory. The game had the feeling of one of those that just wouldn’t come Longford’s way. Penalties were starting to pile up against the home side and this was crystallised on 65 minutes when Longford received their second yellow card of the match. This was another very avoidable, self-inflicted handicap that should have proved decisive in favour of the more dominant Cill Dara effort to this point. But as can happen in sport, in adversity true character can come shining through and so was the case. The “Rope a Dope” phase of the match was coming to an end, and Longford were about to come out swinging for the remainder of the game.

Despite their numeric disadvantage, Longford began to really cut into Cill Dara. Up front Podge Farrell, Liam Brady, Benny McManus and John Geelan were more aggressive, and holes started appearing in the Cill Dara defensive line. Dermot Masterson was introduced on the right wing and immediately had an effect – carrying superbly up the line before putting in a very clever grubber kick to pin Cill Dara into their own corner. Longford secured possession and began a number of rumbles towards the Cill Dara line. After multiple efforts that came up just shy, the ever-dependable Kieran O’Gorman took matters into his own hands to burst through and score under the posts on 70 minutes. The try was converted by Ryan McHugh to swing the scoreboard 10-7 in favour of Longford.

John Geelan carries into contact.

The remainder of the game was played at great intensity by both sides, with Mark McHugh and Tom Gilheany in particular competing ferociously at every breakdown up front. George McDermott and Cormac Casey in the backs were also influential both with and without the ball. Longford remarkably grew stronger as the final minutes wound down and held their shape and discipline to see out the clock. What seemed like a most improbable win was secured – one that should give this team the belief that the league comeback is on this season. This wasn’t a pretty performance, but one that secured a win when in truth the team were off their optimum. That is in itself encouraging – better discipline, a fuller performance and execution will deliver better league days in the new year.

Special mention again in closing to Colm Glynn. On Sunday’s evidence, there is certainly life in the old dog yet!

Longford 2nd XV

Longford 2nd XV had a game to forget against Cill Dara as Longford never really got out to the changing rooms to crash to a 05 24 loss.  A big effort is needed in training before the visit to Wicklow in the New Year, when hopefully the team will be reinforced by a string of injured players coming back into contention.

Men’s Senior training continues Tuesday and Friday evenings at 7.30pm.

Longford Leader Sports Star 2022 Hall of Fame Award

Derick Turner with Club President Donagh McDonnell after receiving his Hall of Fame award

Longford RFC’s Derick Turner collected his award on Friday night at the Longford Arms.  Derick accepted his award and in the interview with host, Tony Ghee, following the presentation, Derick gave an excellent outline of the progression of the club over the last 50 years.  The facilities we have today are a far cry from what they had (or didn’t actually have!) back in the early years and the current club members are lucky to have the benefit of all the hard work that Derick and his generation ploughed into the club.  It was interesting to note the list of firsts achieved by the club in the course of its development, from Prunty pitches, first international floodlit match in Ireland, first clubhouse in the county among others.  Many of which most of us take for granted nowadays!

Congrats to Derick and here’s to many more years of driving it on at Longford Rugby Club.

Longford ladies suffered a tightly contested league defeat in Athy on Sunday. Longford were sitting joint mid-table, level on points with Athy, the girls had an opportunity to move to the top half of the table.  It wasn’t to be on the day unfortunately, however the ladies have another opportunity next weekend as they take on Arklow away.  The Longford girls had a good home win against Arklow in the season opener and if they can produce the same form once again, they should have a great chance on the day.

U16 Girls New Ross 29-25 Longford

U17 Longford 28-26 Edenderry

U16 Wilsons 27-12 Longford (Wednesday night)

U16 Portarlington 29-00 Longford

U17 Longford 28 Edenderry 26

Longford hosted Edenderry for their penultimate game in this section of the Leinster League. Having played against each other twice already this season, it was always going to be a close game against their Midland rivals.

The game started well with Longford being on the front foot right from the start. This was rewarded in the 4th minute when they were awarded a penalty on the Edenderry 22 which Conor duly slotted over. However, some restructuring of the team had to happen after Longford were reduced to 14 men in the 10th minute. While the lads settled in to their new positions, they unfortunately let Edenderry in for 3 tries which they converted two. When it was looking like the opposition were going to run riot, playing with the extra man, the Longford lads showed true grit (great movie!) and determination to fight back, and Conor got in for a try of their own just before half time and with the conversion added that left the game 19-10 to the visitor at half time.

Whatever was said, or in the magic bottle, at half time, the Longfordians came out like a new team in the second half. Their started to pierce holes in the Edenderry defence with the forwards driving arrows into the Edenderry defence, being spearheaded by Stephen, Yaw, Cathal and Sean. During this purple period of the game the young Longford men scored 3 unanswered tries scored by Stephen and Oran, and with Diarmuid making a huge break from inside his own half to sprint to score under the sticks. This put Longford back in front with 10 minutes left on the clock. Edenderry regrouped and, with their never say die attitude, they battled back up the pitch and crossed over the whitewash for another try and with the conversion added put them back in the lead by one point. Unlike other games, Longford stuck to the task right up to the end and once again we were rewarded with a penalty and after a discussion by the caption the decision was made to kick for the sticks. In what turned out to be the last kick of the game, Conor Mulligan slotted it over to leave the fulltime score being a win for Longford 28-26.

The victory, on the back of last week’s win, shows that the hard work on the training ground is starting to pay off. From the great line out jumping by Olan and Cian, to the attacking calls being made by Rian, the defensive work being done by backs like Oran, Caelum and Chris and the kick chase game commanded by Jack Reilly at full back, the commitment by the whole team was immense. Next up is a game away to Boyne in the Leinster League. Training as usual Tuesday 7 to 9:30pm and Thursday 7:30 to 9pm.

Longford Team; Cathal Byrne, Ciaran Heffernan, James Grehan, Cathal Ghee, Sean Molihan, Cian Gavin, Stephen Oates, Olan Bracken, Yaw Appiah, Connor Mulligan, Rian Brown Christopher Trautt, Diarmuid Glennon, Oran Lyons, Caelum McGee, Jack Reilly.

Thanks once again to all who helped out and fed the troops yesterday, even if they did not leave me some of Geraldine’s lasagne. Freddie!!

U16 Portarlington 29-00 Longford

Longford U16 played two games in 3 days this week starting with a return fixture against Wilson’s Hospital. Wilson’s, led by the Longford lad’s club teammate, Shane McGuigan, took the win as McGuigan tormented his club team, scoring 4 tries in the process. This form backs his credentials as one to watch in the Area development programme, with the Midlands development squad.

On Saturday, we traveled to Portarlington with a depleted squad as a number of lads fell ill during the week.  Portarlington took an early lead before Longford piled on the pressure and played the most of the first half in opposition territory, however we were unable to convert possession and pressure into points.  Talisman McGuigan went down injured mid way through the half and in the second half we lost Derek Belton also. Now down to 12 players we were always going to struggle. While the end result didn’t reflect the effort on the day, we know we had enough possibilities to score and even win the fixture, but on the day, it wasn’t to be.  We had excellent performances from George Burns, Jamie Donohue and in particular, relatively new player, Jack Brogan.  Tadgh McCauley continued his good form with strong carries and Harry Byrne continues to shine in the back row.

Next week against Arklow at home is our last grading game before we start the league proper in January and our final game before Xmas will be a Midlands league game at home to Edenderry on the 17th of December.

Longford; Tadgh McCauley, James Cosgrove, Ryan Spollen, Conor O’Grady, Harry Byrne, Joe Davidson, Shane McGuigan, Donnacha Golden, Senan Murphy, Jack Brogan, George Burns, Jamie Donohue, Mel Mulligan.

U16 Girls New Ross 29-25 Longford

Longford U16 Girls travelled the long road to New Ross in the Leinster League.

In a real arm wrestle between the teams, it was New Ross coming away with a narrow win over Longford .

It was an exciting game with super tackling on both sides and some excellent carries by Ava Horkan,  Shauna Hannon and Amber McGrath resulting in their teammates, Isabella Larkin, and Mia Rowan scoring.

Maria Ricon had alot of work to do in the dying minutes in scoring a final try.

We welcomed Olivia Hadzislawus to the team as new recruit.

U13 Boys Carlow 14-20 Longford
Longford travelled to Carlow on Saturday morning in their second game of the Leinster League.
The first try of the game was scored by Longford. The try came after a great passage of play from the Longford backs with Brynn Broshoff and Donnacha O’Reilly running some great lines and creating space out wide for the forwards, by taking the ball hard into contact and securing it, the forwards worked the ball very well keeping it in hand.  It was definitely a forwards try with Jack Smyth scoring.
Cillian Ryan followed that up and scored another good forward try for Longford.

Score at half time was Carlow 10-07 Longford.
Carlow kicked into Longford to start the second half. The Longford lads were on the attack once again.  Longford were held up on the line but determined forward Sean Lavin picked and scored Longfords third try of the game.
Carlow were back on the attack and determined.  Odhran Crossan, Gerry Connaughton and Aiden Quinn putting some great pressure on the attacking line.  Longfords defensive line were fired up and it was a toe to toe in the middle of the pitch. Liam Orohough and Alex Kilrane were putting in try saving tackles. Carlow were determined and scored under the posts. 12 mins to go at 14-15, Longford just had their nose in front.
Longford had ball back in hand, working it well with Tomek Madej, Leon Clarke, Aaron Smyth, and Leo Galvin (match forwards captain) taking on and securing back every ball taken on. Scrum half replacement Cian Mc Guire moving the ball quickly from the back of scrum and rucks out to the back line and Alex Kilrane scored Longford’s fourth try.
The ball was back in Longford hands with 2 minutes to go. The Longford back Sam Quintiliani, James Colreavy, and Gerry Connaughton making ground, Longford awarded a scrum in the last few seconds, secured by Longfords pack, and kicked to touch by Odhran Crossan. Final score Carlow 14-20 Longford.

Longford secure vital win against Dundalk to kick start their season

29/11/2022 Leinster League 1B Longford 18 Dundalk 14

By Mark Quinn at Longford Rugby Club

Longford Senior Men’s 1st XV hosted one of Leinster Junior Rugby’s most formidable opponents, Dundalk RFC, on Sunday in what was a pivotal fixture in the Leinster Division 1B calendar. The match marked Longford reaching the half way point in what has proved a frustrating league campaign to date and one that simply had to be won in order for a fight back to be possible in terms of our league position going into Round 7 of fixtures.

In what was an ideal day for Rugby, the squad arrived focused and single minded as they prepared for the task at hand. Several changes in team selection were required due to injuries throughout the squad and so a new looking mix took to the pitch to take on the task of securing our first league win of the season. Notable changes seen Mark McHugh move to hooker, Danny McHugh move to inside centre and Joe McGowan switching to full back. Tom Gilheany was also rewarded with fine recent displays with a start at openside flanker.

The match started at the expected frantic opening pace. Both sides laid down their respective markers in terms of physicality with big hits being trade throughout the opening exchanges. Longford however were very much equal to the Dundalk pace and indeed began to impose their own shape on proceedings. Several phases of smart attacking rugby with clever interchanging between forwards and backs kept Dundalk guessing. It was game on.

Longford were then dealt an early blow when Captain Danny McHugh stayed down after making a heavy tackle on a member of the dynamic Dundalk back row. As shoulder injury ended his participation and resulted in a shifting of the cards in the backs with Cormac Casey coming on to the wing and Daithí Connolly moving to inside centre. Just as the game restarted, Dundalk moved the play deep into the Longford half and were awarded what would prove to be the first of several penalties in the match. They slotted home the resulting kick to open the scoring at 3-0. The home side were not in the mood to accept any potential change in momentum and immediately set about working their way towards the Dundalk line. Determined phase play brought Longford right back up to the Dundalk try line where after several phases, Benny McManus took control of matters from a lineout maul to crash over and bag a crucial opening try to swing the scoreboard 5-3 in Longford’s favour. Ryan McHugh narrowly missed a very tough side-line conversion kick. However only minutes later he atoned with a sweet penalty attempt that deservedly extended the home lead to 8-3.

Dundalk came roaring back at the Longford defence and began to kick smartly with the wind at their backs. One such effort resulted in a huge territorial gain that pinned Longford tightly into the Club corner of the new 4G pitch and resulted in several scrums being awarded in their favour. Longford gave everything for the next 8 minutes to defend their line against a barrage of Dundalk runners. Eventually a gap opened with the Dundalk player seemingly over the line and the ball only a foot away from being touched down when from nowhere arrived Kieran O’Gorman with a simply astounding hit that foiled the try and turned over possession in Longford’s favour. Longford cleared their lines, but the Dundalk assault was not going away and they landed 2 further penalties before half time to leave the scoreboard 9-8 in their favour at the break.

The second half started as the first left off with both sides competing ferociously. The back row of Alistair McCormack, Kieran O’Gorman and the superb Tom Gilheany were everywhere and making both dominant carries and tackles that kept Longford on the front foot at every breakdown. After some superb interplay between backs and forwards the ball was swung out to Joe McGowan on an overlap to bag the home sides 2nd try of the day and swing the scoreboard back to 13-9 in favour of Longford.

It was at this juncture that Longford had a superb opportunity to really push on and perhaps even dream of a bonus point victory. However, like earlier matches in the campaign indiscipline reappeared for this team and 2 quick yellow cards, both borderline, made the majority of the 2nd half all about hanging in. Dundalk however could smell blood and bagged a try while they had the 2-man advantage to bring the score to 13-14 in their favour. Longford showed huge character to keep the dam from breaking after this and despite the odds began to make gains back into the Dundalk half. Time was however against the home team and it began to feel like another one of those days where the result simply refused to come.

That was however until George McDermot took matters into his own hands in the final minutes to finish off a brilliant phase of attacking rugby and crash over for the most deserved of tries to swing the scoreboard deservedly to 18-14 in Longford’s favour. Longford finished out the final frenetic 3 minutes to the sound of the referees’ whistle. The win that has eluded this team so far this season was theirs and with it the newfound belief that this could be the start of a remarkable fight back in the league for the remainder of the season.

There were standout performances from the majority of the team, but special mention should be given to Mark McHugh, Liam Brady, Benny McManus, Kieran O’Gorman and Player of the Match Tom Gilheany up front. The pick of the backs were Ryan McHugh, George McDermott, DaithÍ Connolly and the McGowan brothers. Special mention also to Rioch Farrell and Cormac Casey who both made very important contributions to a very, very important win.

The season starts here…

Longford 2nd XV

Longford 2nds came up short at home to Dundalk in a good competitive game.  Dundalk raced into a 12-point lead, driven on by their impressive No 8 and second row. Longford responded with a lovely try off a scrum scored in the corner by Steff Evans with Robbie Shaw adding the extras.  The home team turned into the wind and went another 3 points down following a penalty but showed great heart and desire when scoring a top class try. The move started with Jack Finn running the ball back before it was moved left to right.  It was then spun wide to the left where Finn broke forward before offloading to the onrushing Peadar Kenny to burst through and score. A quality try. This left 3 points between the teams and Dundalk held on to win.

Longford had two debutants in Lolu Adjemini and Evan Hogan who made very impressive first appearances. Donal Harkin led up front while Robbie Shaw and Cormac Casey were the pick of the backs.

Men’s Senior training continues Tuesday and Friday evenings at 7.30pm.

Longford ladies had a league break this week and are preparing for a block of games which could really define their league.  Currently sitting joint mid-table, level on points with Athy, the girls next outing is against their mid table opponent’s, followed by two games against teams sitting below them on the league table.  This represents a big opportunity to consolidate position in the top half of the table, ahead of Athy and open a clear gap to the teams below them.

Longford took control of the game from the off in challenging conditions, pressing on their 5-metre line for long periods in the first half, but Warriors spirited defence held Longford up over the line twice, before Cathal Byrne made the initial breakthrough for a try. Unfortunately, the difficult conditions prevented its conversion.

The game continued in this vein, but warriors defence held strong.  James Grehan eventually powered through to score.  Rian Brown added the conversion.

During one brief foray up  the field by Warriors, Longford scrumhalf, Conor Mulligan spotted an opportunity to kick behind the opposition defence and Jack Reilly showed a great turn of speed to reach the ball first and score a try.

Half time 17 – 0 for Longford.

Playing against the wind and up the slight hill in the second half, we expected to be pressed by Warriors, and so it turned out.  Stalwart defence prevented Warriors from making any headway as out lads kept their discipline and prevented any serious threats developing.

In this regard, while all stood up and contributed, returning player Stephen Oates was particularly effective in defence and attack.

We re-established our supremacy to again press their line and after being previously held up, James Grehan again touched down close to the posts and converted by Conor Mulligan.  After further pressure on their line over a long period, keeping the ball moving from side to side and stretching the defence, a ball was moved out the line and after a great lay off pass by Jack Ó Hara to Jack Reilly, he scored a try in the corner.

In the last few minutes, the lads started to tire, which allowed the warriors score a consoliation try despite the best efforts of Conor Mulligan, who was the last line of defence on this occasion.  Final score Warriors 07-29 Longford.

Most notable was the superb performance of the Longford scrum, and also our lineout, particularly by John Sheridan and his colleagues who were masterful in their performance.

U14

Midlands Warriors 23-54 Longford

Longford u14’s travelled to Moate on Sunday to take on a physical Westmeath side.

The game started poor for Longford conceding in the first 5 minutes.  Longford were missing a few players due to illness, and this was evident until the introduction of young Finn Larkin.  The Killoe lad ensured Longford clean ball at the breakdown and was instrumental in Longford earning their first try with Connor Quinn Kelly going over.

Longford pushed on from there with tries from Sam Elliott, Jay Reynolds, Brody Corcoran and Ethan Neary.

At half time things looked good for Longford but now, playing against the slight hill Longford had to dig deep against a powerful pack.

Midland Warriors recorded two tries in the second half, but Longford’s full back and man of the match Conor Quinn Kelly quickly cancelled them out.

Special mentions to Cillian Fagan, our new recruit from Mullinalaghta, who played a blinder as did William Nolan.  This side overall has shown great commitment and loyalty to each other.  Final score Longford 54 – 22 over Midland Warriors.

Longford team:  Jay Reynolds, Jack Neary, Eli Mulligan, Brody Corcoran, Adam Cronogue Flood, Sam Elliott (Captain), Conor Quinn Kelly, Luke Duncan, Tadhg Fagan, Ethan Neary, William Nolan, Pietro Gino, Finn Larkin, Naoise Golden, Cillian Fagan, Brandon Cronogue.

U12 Away Blitz- Birr Rugby Club

Longford U12 team played a blitz at West Offaly Rugby Club Sunday morning. They played two very competitive games of rugby with some outstanding performances from a very young team.  It was free flowing rugby at its best! Longford had 18 players which was an outstanding turnout.  Longford played 12 aside and they acquitted themselves very well.  They are learning their trade ever week and and a very high standard is being achieved.  We hope to get a training session in during the week so please watch this space for updates.  We would like to thank all at West offaly for their friendly and welcome and for all the goodies afterwards, it was much appreciated on a cold Sunday morning.  BD

U8 Away Blitz –  Tullamore Rugby Club

On a blustery and murky day, Longford’s U8’s made the journey to Tullamore for a round of games against Offaly opposition.

First up was Birr, a club renowned for producing skilful and strong players, and today was no exception. However, Longford were up to the task and dominated the early exchanges, skilfully retaining a lot of possession. Longford were excellent in their high tempo off load game; Micheál and Joey pulling the opposition one way, then the other. Michael marshalled the defence, snuffing out the Birr counterattack, while Jack’s tigerish tackling stemmed the Birr offensive. Anthony showed his silky skills, weaving in and out of a sturdy defence to keep Birr on their toes. Scott’s line breaks gave Longford momentum, making Birr having to second guess what he was going to do next. A high-scoring game with tries scored by all the Longford warriors; the tempo never relented as Birr gave as good as they got.

Next up was two back-to-back games against the powerhouse that is Tullamore. Great hosts off the pitch, they were intent on spoiling the party on the pitch, but Longford again were up to the task, despite the bruising encounter with Birr.  Jack hit a tackle count that Josh van de Flier would have been proud of and was rewarded with both a turnover and scoring an excellent try in the corner. Scott again with ball in hand broke the gain-line constantly, the stats showing 172 meters made, and a couple of tries to boot. Anthony was fleet of foot, leaving the red and black of Tullamore in his wake to touch down. Joey’s snipe break paid off in the right-hand corner to score brilliantly, despite the attention of four defenders. Michael transformed into Tadgh Beirne, as he menaced the Tullamore defence, hitting ruck after ruck and forcing six turnovers in the red zone, and a brace of tries to add to his tally. Micheál is our Gibson-Park, quick ball to his teammates, constantly aware of the threat and a number of opportunists tries to leave the crowd ecstatic.

Leinster League Divison 1B

Longford had a down week in the Leinster League, allowing time to regroup and prepare for the two game block of home league fixtures before the Christmas break.  First up is a visit to CPL Park for Dundalk who sit just above bottom placed Longford on the league table.  Dundalk’s second win was last week against Tullow and will be keen to build on that to drag themselves towards mid table safety.  For Longford it is absolutely critical now to get some momentum and put points on the board to stave off the relegation dangers later in the competition.

Meghan Banahan on the attack for Longford

Longford moved ball quickly through the phases early with carriers from Dora Ledwith, Rachel O Farrell, Leanne Keegan & Rebekah Stavus.  Accurate passing across the line saw Rachel score the first try.

Following a scrum to Longford, quick ball to Leona on the wing and back to Leanne Keegan who nailed the score the second try.

Longford again worked well to get up their 22 and from the back of a ruck Emma got the ball to Megan, and on to Rachel to score the next try.

Maria got the next score before the best one of the day, as Megan Banahan used her quick feet & fended off the Gorey defence to score a tremendous try.

A yellow for both sides followed from two separate high tackles, but Longford continued the onslaught.

Amanda Sheridan fends off Gorey

Leoana and Leanne got two more in quick succession before Gorey eventually got off the mark, but the final word was from Longford, who shifted the ball to Rebecca O’Hara, who ran in the last try of the game.

Longford Leader Sports Star Awards 2022

Derek Turner – Hall of Fame Award 2022

In 1967 a young Derick Turner, along with a group of like-minded people, set about reforming Longford Rugby Club. There had been a history of rugby in the county going back to the 1800’s but if fell by the wayside during the war years.

In those early years the Club played on a field borrowed from a local farmer and players changed at the back of the Annaly Hotel, where a single cold shower and barrel of cold water were the only facilities enjoyed by the players.

Longford RFC have come a very long way, and while one person can never be credited with all that has happenedthroughout its development, Derick would be the first to acknowledge the help from so many people over the years. However, there is no doubt that he has driven the development of the Club, both on and off the pitch over the past 55 years and continues to play and active role in day-to-day affairs as a member of the board and sitting on the development and fundraising committees.

Over the 55 years Derick has served as Club Captain, firstteam coach and Club President as well as holding various positions on the executive committee.

Derick instigated the introduction of the youths and minis section back in the 70’s. He also pushed on the development of women’s rugby while heavily involved in getting the Club to provide coaching in the schools throughout the county both national and secondary.

He has been a mentor to so many young players who have come through the Club over the years. He is always willing to provide help and encouragement, not just on the rugby front, but if anyone had a problem, he would always be willing to try and help them resolve it if he could at all.

He would collect players who had difficulty making training or make sure to get them back to work or collage after games regardless of if he had to go out of his way, the welfare of the players has always been his main concern.

On the Club facilities front, Derick Turner has been involved in all major developments at the club in his 55-yearinvolvement. From the humble beginnings in the borrowed field mentioned above, the club now enjoys some of the best facilities of any sporting club in the country. The club has their own grounds with two grass Prunty pitches, one of which is fully floodlit. There is a new state of the art 4G pitch, again, floodlit to televised match standard. The clubhouse facilities boast separate men’s and women’sdressing rooms, a functional gym, a dedicated youth centre and comfortable clubhouse bar including restaurant and conference facilities.

While a lot of people have come and gone since 1967, Derick Turner is, to this day, the one constant at Longford Rugby Club, be it driving development, encouraging players to join, fundraising, marking pitches, tidying up the grounds or whatever has been required.

Derick has always been to the forefront and shows no sign of letting up.

Longford Rugby Club is a great asset, not just to club members, but to the wider community!

The club’s presence in the heart of the community and county, is due to the great work and foresight of Derick Turner – Longford Sports Awards 2022 – Hall of Fame Award.

Longford 38-28 Ravens

Longford U16s hosted Ravens (Birr/Roscrea amalgamation) on Saturday last in a cold and wet CPL Park. Following a narrow loss to Tullamore the previous week, a strong performance was necessary from the home team to get their Midland League challenge back on course and they didn’t disappoint.  Some strong Longford probing from the start failed to yield the deserved reward and in their first foray into the Longford half, Ravens openside forward crossed for a try on 5 minutes.  Longford stuck to their task well at the resumption and good distribution from scrum half Donnacha Golden following multiple phases of play led to a well worked try by Jamie Donohue.  A second followed for Donohue some 7 minutes later following some excellent work by Conor O Grady and Joseph Davidson in the pack creating a sound platform for the backs to spread the ball wide.  Senan Murphy scored the conversion from the touchline to register a 12-7 lead for Longford. Ravens fought gallantly and brought the fight back to Longford and a tight arm wrestle ensued between two evenly matched teams.  In the 27th minute, having forced a turnover in their own 22, Longford passed the ball through the phases with Daniel Corr popping up to make the decisive break and scored under the posts.  Ravens immediately came to life with several strong carries into Longford territory and were rewarded with a try under the posts on the stroke of half time.

Longford carried a 5-point advantage into the second half but extended it immediately following good handling by George Burns to release Jonathan Groenewald along the wing to score a blistering try in the corner.  Ravens were not throwing in the towel by any means, and another try kept them in touch before Ryan Spollen burrowed through a pile of bodies to touch down near the posts for Longford.  Some sturdy defence by Daragh Walsh at full back steadied the Longford ship.   A try from Shane McGuigan followed shortly afterwards which crowned a fantastic outing by the young number 8.  With McGuigan’s try, Longford finally had some breathing space but lost a player to the sin bin for the last 8 minutes and had to fight hard to maintain their advantage.  Ravens scored a try in the last play of the game to finish Longford 38-28 Ravens.

This was a pulsating game which was a credit to the effort of both teams. Longford will be particularly happy with the showing of Donnacha Golden, Jamie Donohue and Ryan Spollen who each contributed strongly to a solid team performance.

Scorers: Tries –  Jamie Donohue 2, Jonathan Groenewald 1, Daniel Corr 1, Shane McGuigan 1, Ryan Spollen 1.

Conversions- Senan Murphy 4

Longford: Tadgh McCauley, James Cosgrove, Ryan Spollen, Conor O’Grady, Danny Kelly, Harry Byrne, Daniel Corr, Derek Belton, Shane McGuigan, Senan Murphy, Dan Donohue, Tom Murray, Darragh Walsh, Donnacha Golden, Jonathan Groenewald, George Burns,

U14 Match report

Wexford 30-12 Longford

Longford U14s team had an early start when they travelled to Wexford.  Longford hit the ground running and after a scoreless first quarter, Wexford touched down for the first try.  The home side would strike again before halftime.  Longford started the second half even better than the first with a well worked move from a scrum leading to Ethan Neary touching down in the corner. Wexford responded with another before Longford struck again with a great team effort.  Longford’s second try came from Brody Corcoran and the conversion from Conor Quinn Kelly.

Wexford did score again and with their size just out muscling Longford.  Longford had plenty of chances throughout the game, one of which came from a powerful run by Jay Reynolds to be stopped a meter short and was turned over for the last play of the game. Longford had made position changes all over the field and the effort from the lads was impressive.  Conor Mahon as captain led his team all the way.  Sam Elliott put in a brilliant display at number 8 whilst carrying an injury.  Adam Cronogue, Evan Bohan and Brody Corcoran made up the front row of a scrum which was never in doubt.  Jay Reynolds, Jack Neary second row with some great support from Eli Mulligan and William Nolan. Two of our lighter players Naoise Golden and Finn Larkin were superb on ball.  Pietro Gino and Brandon Cronogue worked 13 and 14 positions brilliantly with plenty of pace and tackles made. Conor Quinn Kelly played full back, providing great cover and clearance time and time again. Ethan Neary played a very important role at number 9 and delivered some excellent ball throughout the game. Special mention to Jack Neary and Luke Carlton who only played for the first time on Saturday, so well done to both lads.  Final score Wexford 30- 22 Longford.

New players always welcome please contact Longford RFC if interested.

Longford squad; Ethan Neary, Conor Mahon (C), Finn Larkin, Naoise Golden, William Nolan, Brody Corcoran, Brandon Cronogue, Adam Cronogue Flood, Samuel Elliott, Tadhg Fagan, Eli Mulligan, Conor Quin Kelly, Jay Reynolds, Evan Bohan, Jack Neary, Pietro Gina, Luke Carlton

Mini Rugby

Our U12 team played in a blitz hosted by Birr Rugby Club.  Longford played 3 games in total, playing Birr, West Offaly Lions and Roscrea.  Our lads played some very attractive rugby but when called on to mix it with the opposition they were not found wanting.   The team are improving week on week and are enjoying their rugby. International Comment

The Autumn international series concluded over the weekend.

Australia were the opposition at the Aviva, and both sides were keen to finish their autumn series on a high.  It was more a game for the purest as neither side managed to inflict major blows in a low scoring contest.  Irelands defence was excellent given the amount of possession Australia had but were lacking in attack with too many penalties conceded and also uncharacteristic handling errors.  Ireland took the win with Ross Byrne slotting over a penalty, to end the year as number 1 side in the world having beaten all the southern hemisphere big 3 teams this year.  Roll on the 6Nations!

Men’s XV News

13112022 Leinster League Division 1B Athy 28-12 Longford

The initial stages of the game were a close affair with the play staying between the 22s.  It wasn’t until the latter stages of the first half that saw some scores!

A scrum, from a crooked Athy line-out, gave Longford good go forward ball.  Longford worked the ball to the line.  With Athy giving away another penalty, a quick tap ball saw Kieran Gorman cross the line for the first score.  Athy 00-05 Longford

Longford quickly had to defend from the restart. The clearance kick saw Athy work the ball across the pitch to score.  With the wind with them the try was also converted. Athy 07-05 Longford.

Longford were caught once again from the second half kick-off.  A  clever kick through saw Athy cross the line for their second try.  From there, Athy just got stronger, and good go forward ball from the restart and they crossed the line once again to leave score at Athy 21-05 Longford. Thereafter, Longford lifted their game somewhat and carried well from a line out in the 22 and Benny McManus crossed the whitewash to close the gap.  Athy 21-12 Longford.

Longford were then awarded a penalty inside the 22.  A quick tap and go play saw Longford carry well but Athy defended excellently to hold up the ball.  Further good carries from Longford forwards, Benny McManus, Kieran O’Gorman, and Podge Farrell, saw Longford gain territory but Athy defended well  and managed to keep Longford at bay.

At the half way point of the 2nd half. Longford had some good possession in attack, but  they just couldn’t convert this possession into points on the scoreboard, and on one occasion a very good maul was held up!  Athy made the best of another Longford mistake to run in another score.  Athy 28-12 Longford, with 10 minutes remaining.

With Longford under pressure, a good steal from Podge Farrell saw Longford clear their line.

The last ten minutes saw Athy put Longford under serious pressure, but Longford worked hard to defend.  Longford were awarded a penalty in final minutes. Some great carries followed from Seamus McKeown and Benny McManus again, but the Longford men just couldn’t convert to points.  Final score Athy 28-12 Longford.

2nds XV Match Report Athy 21-23 Longford

Diarmuid Masterson kicks a penalty for Longford

From a penalty Longford scored on 23min to go 00-03 up. Just after this, a classy chip & catch, the ball went out to Cormac McDonagh to score a try on 24 mins.  Athy 00-08 Longford. A subsequent penalty on 38 min made it Athy 00-11 Longford.

Eventually a try was scored by the home side on the cusp of half time.  The Athy forwards managed to rumble off penalty and score, with the conversion kicked  bringing it to 07-11 at the break.  On 60 mins a penalty to Athy got the hosts within 1 point.  Tom Gilheany then crashed over after a great dummy penalty move to score a try on 65 minutes put Longford 10-16 up.  Cormac McDonagh then scored a try off Tom Gilheany intercept on 72 mins bringing the score to 21-23 after the successful conversion off the touch line.

Other players of note in the game were – backs Jimmy Mimnagh, Cormac Casey, Diarmuid Masterson & Jack Magan.  For the forwards, Brian Hanly, Phillip Prunty & Donal Harkin impressed.  Shaun Harrison impressed on his debut as hooker.

Match Report U16 Girls Longford 53-22 Wolves

Longford U16 Girls welcomed Wolves to CPL Park Saturday last.  Longford opened the scoring with an impressive display of speed by Pilar Heck. The tries continued throughout the game with a closing try from Andrea Nolan, giving Longford a final score of 53-22.

Longfords Forwards were dominant in the scrums and Line Outs with Lucy O Connor winning a number of opposition ball in the air.  Longford’s defence was exceptionally strong throughout the game.

The girls worked together and put on a super display of Rugby, working hard as a team to bring each try across the line.

Longford team; Ava Horkan, Shauna Hannon, Maria Costa,  Anna O’Connor,  Aoife McVeigh,  Niamh Brady, Isabella Larkin, Mia Rowan, Andrea Nolan, Pilar Heck and Amber McGrath.

Scorers; Pilar Heck (2) Mia Rowan (3) Andrea Nolan (1) Isabell Larkin (1) Amber McGrath (1) Ava Horkan (1)

Next Game: Kilkenny Away on Sat 19th November.

U16 Boys Tullamore 12-05 Longford

Longford contested well and took possession after the start and were putting together good phases in the opposing half of the pitch. The attacking intent continued and on 8 minutes Shane McGuigan crossed for Longfords score.

Longford kicked well into the breeze to prevent Tullamore from yielding too muck possession in the wrong area of the pitch.  Longford were pinged however for continuous penalties and when the eventual conceded try cam, Longford were luck not to be reduced to 14 men, such was the number of penalties against them.

The second half was very similar arm wrestle to the first with both sides not yielding territory or possession too cheaply.  On one occasion when Longford did kick the ball unnecessarily it resulted in the score that decided the game.

Longford can be proud of the performance on this occasion as, just last year, the result in the corresponding fixture was a 40-point loss. The improvement in the Longford lads has been impressive and, on another day, they may just have shaded the game.

Scorer: Try- Shane McGuigan

Longford: Tadgh McCauley, James Cosgrove, Ryan Spollen, Conor O’Grady, Danny Kelly, Harry Byrne, Daniel Corr, Shane McGuigan, Mel Mulligan, Senan Murphy, Dan Donohue, Tom Murray, Darragh Walsh, Donnacha Golden, Jonathan Groenewald, Niall Connaughton, Aaron Hopkins.

Schools Rugby

Ardscoil Phadraig 34-19 Moyne CS

Well done to Ardscoil Phadraig Junior boys rugby squad who secured a 34-19 win over Moyne Community School on Friday last.

Longford RFC regular, Ryan Spollen and Mullahoran’s Tiernan Flood accounted for the Ardscoil Phádraig tries while another Longford RFC man, George Burns, was in brilliant kicking form from the tee. Another Longford RFC regular, Tadhg McCauley, was also immense in his role at tighthead prop throughout, continuing in a fantastic vein of form for both club and school.

The school wish to thank Daniel McHugh, from Longford Rugby club, for his dedication and support in continuing the development of rugby in the school and also our own PE Department for their work and enthusiasm towards providing an ever expanding programme of sport for all students.

International Comment

The Autumn international series continued over the weekend.

Fiji were the opposition in a lacklustre game at the Aviva, that failed to excite despite the 5 tries scored in a 35-17 win.  Italy were unlikely victors over Australia, who will be hurting as they visit Dublin next week.  SA went down to France in a keenly contested match however yet again it’s the coach who steals the headlines with yet another online cut at the officiating team, a nasty habit that the powers should deal with.

Longford Business Lunch

It was a full house as Longford’s business people and rugby fans gathered at Longford Rugby Club on Friday for two of the country’s leading CEOs, Ballinalee’s Anne Heraty (retired CEO/CPL) and Mick Dawson (Outgoing CEO of Leinster Rugby) joined former RTE man, Ciaran Mullooly on stage to impart some thoughts and anecdotes on a variety of topics and questions.

Pictured at the business lunch, Karen Lennon, Club Vice President, Pat Fitzgerald, former president IRFU, Mick Dawson, outgoing CEO Leinster Rugby, Anne Hearty, founder and former CEO CPL Resources, Derick Turner, board member and Donagh McDonnell, Club President.

MC Karen Lennon introduced the guests after a welcome address by Club President, Donagh McDonnell.  Pat Quinn was on hand afterwards to auction two signed jerseys and other items sponsored on the day and the guests were treated to a very entertaining comedy performance to bring proceedings to a close.

Organiser Derick Turner said. “The Business Lunch will hopefully become a regular fixture in the Rugby Club calendar, and we are especially delighted that the inaugural lunch is being supported by such stalwarts of the rugby, business and community sectors. Longford Rugby Club wish to thank everyone who supported the event, our special guests, Anne Hearty and Mick Dawson and Ciaran Mullooly and a special word of thanks to the organising committee.  We look forward to the next event in the not-too-distant future.

Men’s XV News

06/11/2022 Leinster League Division 1B Tullow 28-10 Longford

Frustration continues for Longford 1st XV away to Tullow

Mark Quinn at the Black Gates grounds, Tullow, Co. Carlow.

Frustration was again the word of the day after another tough match for the Longford 1st XV away to Tullow on Sunday. Tullow away can traditionally be one of the least rewarding fixtures of the season and they were in no mood to part with points easily on this occasion either.

In what was a perfect day for rugby, the match got off to the high tempo start anticipated. Tullow are renowned for their direct and hugely physical style of play and this was evident from the outset. As both sides tested each other in the early phases, it was clear to see that the intensity of the match was going to be brutal with a number of big hits being landed by both sides.

Not long into the half Longford were punished by a smart opening try move from Tullow which was converted. This was disappointing as it was conceded at a stage of the match when Longford were setting down their own marker and trying to build phases and get into the match. As can happen however the home side took the momentum from this and bagged another shortly after which was again converted to leave the score 14-0 against Longford midway through the first half. Shortly after Alistair McCormack was unfortunate to come off the wrong end of a heavy collision and was replaced by John Geelan at flanker. It was time for cool heads and composure – however frustration was creeping in and Tullow weren’t for easing off. They bagged a third converted try as half time approached and again converted. It was 21-0 before Longford knew it. Tullow however gave Longford a ray of light with 2 yellow cards in quick succession as the half time whistle blew. They would be down to 13 men for the next 10 minutes.

The second half took off to another frantic start with big hits going in across the field. Kieran O’Gorman at No.8 was relentless in his carrying and fought like a lion against a very physical defensive set. Indeed, his contribution without the ball was equally as aggressive with tackle after tackle being made to stem the Tullow momentum. The team began to respond and get into the game. However, frustratingly Longford were then cleverly picked apart out wide for Tullow to slide in for a fourth try which was again impressively converted. 28-0 down early in the second half and things were simply not going to plan.

Longford’s issues were largely created by a misfiring lineout and the lack of return from this crucial aspect of the game resulted in little possession from which to launch our gameplan. There is no issue with our bravery, commitment or aggression on the pitch. It is this technical part of rugby that is giving our opponents huge advantages this season and is largely responsible for where we find ourselves.

It was important now with 30 minutes left in the contest to front up and thankfully that is how the game ended. The introduction of Player/Coach Henry Bryce at centre in the 2nd half provided Longford with a second point of high intensity attack and he made several carries that reminded Tullow they were still in a match despite their lead. One of these phases resulted in the Longford backs finally getting their hands on the ball and spinning it wide for Daithí Connelly to slide in at the right corner for Longford’s opening try to tweak to scoreboard to 28-5.

Longford began to really dent the Tullow lines and indeed dominate possession and territory. The lineout started to finally produce some returns and the team clicked into gear. There were further big carries from Podge O’Brien, Benny McManus and the Geelan brothers up front with the backs starting to get into their rhythm through Ryan McHugh, George McDermott and Danny McHugh. This resulted in another backs try through Brian Harte as the game closed down to bring the score to 28-10 – a fairer reflection on the match and some reward in particular for Longford’s late endeavours.

Longford 2nd XV Tullow 05-13 Longford

Longford 2nd XV find their mojo in impressive Tullow win

Mark Quinn at the Black Gates grounds, Tullow, Co. Carlow.

The Longford 2nd XV put in a fine performance away to Tullow on Sunday past. In the curtain opener ahead of the main fixture, this was a keenly fought contest with both teams fronting up from the off in what was a preview of the physicality to come in the later game.

The match remarkably stayed at 0-0 for the first half as both sides cancelled each other out. Longford had several opportunities to capitalise on both their possession and territory but a mixture of poor final phase execution and indeed highly questionable decisions by the referee continually stemmed the positive momentum being generated.

This was tested early in the second half when Tullow scored an unconverted try against the run of play. Longford were 5-0 down with still the majority of the 2nd half to come. The team needed to really front up and go for the win. This target was progressed against soon after with Ríoch Farrell cleverly working the touchline to slide in for a classic wingers try to bring the score to 5-5. The forwards were starting to dominate again with Brian Hanley, Philip Prunty, Conor McGovern and Ivor McCormack making their presence felt with their opposing numbers. However, it was Tom Gilheany at No.8 who was perhaps most influential in the forwards with several decisive tackles and brave carries that gave real impetus to the fight up front.

But it was the eventual Man of the Match that fittingly had the decisive last word on this match.  Jack Magan at scrum half was majestic all day. His decision making, running, kicking and passing were outstanding in equal measure all game and there was no one more worthy to clinch the fixture with a fine break away try to turn the score board on its head. Diarmuid Masterson converted to bring the score to 12-5 in favour of Longford 2nd XV and this is how it finished.

Ladies’ 2022/23 Season.

Longford 15-19 Wicklow J1

Longford took on Wicklow on home on Sunday. The back line showed some fantastic passing skill between Leanne Keegan and Rachel Farrell providing Laura Gallagher with the ball who touched it down for the first try of the game. Wicklow replied with immense pressure and defence allowing them to gain possession. Amanda Sheridan and Leanne Keegan were immense to prevent Wicklow from gaining ground. Leanne managed to steal the ball from a ruck and broke several tackles to sprint clear, however a small kick went over the try line, but the girls were unable to touch it down. Longford and Wicklow then played through several scrums and lineouts without making any ground. Tegan Evens then brought Longford inside the 22 and from a maul Megan Banahan on the ball spotted a gap and sprinted for the line. A deliberate knock on from Wicklow earned a yellow card and from the penalty,  Megan ran in the second try.

Wicklow then put Longford under serious pressure, but Longford dug deep to keep the score 10-0 at half time.

Wicklow started the second half with determination to get some points on the board.  Wicklow spotted a gap on the wing and ran in for their first try. Not converted.

Some very hard-hitting tackles from Tegan and Dora Ledwith allowed the forwards make some ground. A quick pick from the back of a ruck from Maria allowed Longford score, bringing the score to 15 – 5. Wicklow spotted another gap on the wing to score their second try bringing the score to 15 – 12. Despite Longford playing through several phases, Wicklow intercepted a pass and scored under post which was also converted.

Final score Wicklow 19-15 Longford.

Longford: Amy Molloy, Mary Sheridan, Tara Gilna, Amanda Sheridan, Rebeccas Stavuse, Maria Kelleher, Judy Starzyndka, Dora Ledwith, Emma Dardis, Tegan Evans, Leona Hoare, Megan Banahan, Leanne Keegan, Laura Gallagher, Rachel Farrell, Mandy Ryan and Katie Lee.

Longford 19-19 Kilkenny

Longford conceded first after 5 minutes of play as both teams tested each other on the fringes.  Longford contested and took possession after the restart and were putting together good phases in the opposing half of the pitch. The attacking intent continued and on 13 minutes Shane McGuigan crossed for Longfords first score.

The pressure game through the pack worked well but Longford were forcing some 50/50 passes when the better option would have been to take the ball into contact.  Kilkenny for their part we’re very quick off the defensive line which yielded turnover possession on numerous occasions.  Fortunately, they were unable to add to their tally. Longford continued to press up the park and on 25 minutes Conor O’Grady dotted down for our second try.  Senan Murphy managed the tricky conversion into the breeze, his second of the day, giving Longford a 14-05 lead.

Kilkenny followed up with their own score before the break narrowing the gap to 2points at 14-12 at halftime.

After the break Jilkenny struck once again to retake the lead at 14-19. Longford kept it tight for most of the remaining time until Jamie Donohue managed to claim a clearance kick and force his way through to level the score. On this occasion the conversion was missed to leave the final score at 19-19.  Best for Longford we’re Ghana McGuigan, Conor O’Grady, Tadgh McCauley, and Harry Byrne in the pack. The back line didn’t get much  in terms of attacking intent and on another day would have been worth a score or two.  We take on Kilkenny away in two weeks so hopefully we see an improvement then on today’s performance.

Scorers: Tries- Shane McGuigan, Conor O’Grady, and Jamie Donohue.  Cons- Senan Murphy x2.

Longford: Tadgh McCauley, James Cosgrove, Joseph Davidson, Conor O’Grady, Danny Kelly, Harry Byrne, Daniel Corr, Shane McGuigan, Mel Mulligan, Senan Murphy, Dan Donohue, Tom Murray, Jamie Donoghue George Burns, Darragh Walsh, Donnacha Golden, Ryan Spollen, Vianney Durand, Jonathan Groenewald

U14 Girls Naas 56-26 Longford

Longford  U14 girls were away to Naas for their 1st round in the Leinster League.

Following a blitz last Saturday with Mullingar and Sligo, this Longford  U14 team were finding their feet with new players gaining their confidence. This u14 team are continuing  to develop and it great to see how old and new players work together.

Longford were slow to start, and Naas were soon leading by 12- 0.

Longford fought back with a great try in the corner from Orla McGann.  The Longford girls played narrow, and Nass spotted the space.  A brilliant run by Naas almost came off only to be held up by Longford’s Aoibheann O’Brien.

Longford forwards were working hard, making big tackles, particularly by Avril Murtagh & Suzanne Moolick.

New players, Lillie Dowd & Doireann Nì Thuathail broke through a strong Naas defence, yielding 2 tries for the Longford girls.

Naas matched Longford try for try with first half ending 26- 26.

In the second half, longford were tired.  Naas hit the ground running.  Emma Darby made a great tackle but was unable to stop strong Naas scoring.

Longford continued to fight, a quick ball from scrum half Holly McKenna to Doireann Nì Thuathail, taking a big hit from the Naas side,  just stopping her short of try line.  Naas turned over the ball and they then made it to the try line only to be held up by Longford!

Without substitutes Longford were struggling while Naas had the fresh players to see out the game.

Final score Naas 56-26 Longford

Longford team: Suzanne Moolick, Emma Darby, Deirine Farrar, Avril Murtagh, Aoibheann O’Brien, Orla McGann, Bailee De Nysschen, Doireann NÌ Thuathail, Lillie Dowd, Holly McKenna, Rowan Hall

U16 Girls Ashbourne/Balbriggan 54-30 Longford

Longford U16 Girls travelled to Balbriggan in the Leinster Cup Quarter Final and took on a very strong amalgamation of Ashbourne and Balbriggan.

Longford opened the scoring with a try in the corner by Pilar Heck.

The response by Ash/Balbriggan was immediate and so it went try for try by both teams leaving Longford just ahead at Halftime by 19-22

Niamh Brady opened the scoring in the 2nd half with an intercept try.  Further tries were scored by Mia Rowan, Amber McGrath, and Andrea Nolan.  Unfortunately, Longford were out run by fresh legs in the 2nd half however the Longford girls never gave up.

Final score Ashbourne/Balbriggan 54-30 Longford.

Longford Team: Ava Horkan, Shauna Hannon, Maria Rincon, Anna O Connor, Ava O Loughlin, Lucy O Connor,  Niamh Brady, Amber McGrath, Mia Rowan, Andrea Nolan, Rachel O Loughlin, Pilar Heck, Aoife McVeigh, Clara Forbes.

International Comment

The Autumn international series got under way in earnest on Saturday.

SA presented the biggest and most physical challenge for Andy Farrells Ireland team as they prepare for next years world cup.  It was current world champions take versus the current world number 1 ranked team.  It was a physical, attritional, arm wrestle until the game opened up with tries from Josh Van der Flier and Mack Hansen.  SA hit back but it was too little too late as Ireland backed up the summer series performances.

Next up is Fiji which should see some fringe players offered the opportunity to claim squad places ahead of next year’s world cup.

Senior weekend results

Leinster league Div. 1B

J1 Longford 09-22 Carlow

J2 Longford 05-33 Carlow

There was no joy for Longford on Sunday as two strong Carlow sides took on the home sides J1 & J2 teams.  Longford were very much second best on the day in the J1 game as a faster and hungrier Carlow side were more clinical than Longford each time they ventured to the red zone.  Longford had chances but lacked the sharpness required to create problems for the visitors.  Oddly enough, 3 penalties off the tee, kept Longford in the game well into the second half.  It was only in the second half Longford showed any good attacking intent with some strong carrying by Benny McManus and Kieran O’Gorman.  Ultimately, Carlow were better on the day and the final score reflected the performance.

Longford have a welcome break next week and will reflect on the lost opportunity to claim their first league win.  We are the only team yet to record a win so far in league Div. 1B.  Results elsewhere mean the gap to the joint leaders has widened to 11 points.  Both the J1 & J2 sides return to action in the first of two away games, the first away to Tullow on Sunday 6th November in round 5 of the league.

Kick off in Tullow will be at 3.00pm while the J2 sides kick off at the earlier time of 1.30pm.

Longford v New Ross Match report

Longford were away to New Ross on Sunday.  In the early stages of the game Longford conceded a lot of penalties.  However, against the run of play. Leanne Keegan intercepted a promising New Ross attack to run the length of the pitch and score under the posts.  After repeated infringement’s, Longford’s Megan Banaghan received marching orders to the bin. Longford had to defend but conceded another penalty which was scored by New Ross. In their next attack they got over the line but was held up.  New Ross then found a gap and scored under the post.

In the second half, a defensive Longford box kick was blocked down which resulted in a try. Longford restarted but were reduced to 14 once again for a deliberate knock on.  New Ross scored the resulting penalty in front of the posts.  New Ross then took full advantage of having the extra player, resulting in two tries in quick succession.  Longford finally managed to get some forward momentum, forwards and backs combined well but unfortunately were not able to get over the try line.  New Ross on the day were the better team, Longford take a lot from this game and look forward to a home game in two weeks time against Wicklow J1.

Under 15’s Midlands League Match Report

Longford 48-00 Edenderry

Longford U15’s were back in action against Edenderry once again, this time in the Midlands League.

Torrential rain made for difficult play.  A determined run from Brian Mulvhill secured our first try of the game, converted by Conor Clarke.

Dominic Greene, supported by Liam Ruske and Diarmuid Hanly, touched the ball down for a second try followed by another fine try from Brian Mulvihill leaving Longford heading into half time with a score of 17-0.

The second half started with a try and conversion from Conor Clarke.  Finbar Thomas scored next, supported by David O Halloran, and then Conor Clarke with a second try left it 36-0.  A great break from Tadgh Rodgers with an intelligent offload to Ryan Egan led to a further try from Egan.  Finbar, who was in top form scored a further try leaving the final score Longford 48 Edenderry 0.

Some great defence by Edenderry meant that the score does not fully reflect the tough match that it was.

Aaron Walsh and Dillon Ledwith return to the team, and both played very well.  Our scrums were excellent and the work rate of David O Halloran, Conor Meadows, Liam Ruske and Diarmuid Nerney was excellent.  Our backs continue to grow in both skill and stature and good games were had by Brian Reynolds, Aaron Marshall, Aidan Kelly, Ciaran McEvoy, and Ryan Egan.

U14 match report

Tullamore v Longford

The boys Travelled to Tullamore on Saturday.

It was a poor start from the Longford team, conceding 2 tries in the first 20 minutes.  The introduction of Tadgh Fagan in the front row changed Longford’s fortune, ensuring clean ball from the back of the scrum.

Captain Sam Elliott and ethan Neary managed to make longfords first try possible with Ethan Neary bringing it over the line just before the half time whistle.  Longford trailed by 24-07 at half time.

The second half showed a change of fortune, with multiple penalties being conceded by Tullamore.  An excellent try was brought over the line by Ethan Neary, converted by Connor Quinn Kelly.  This brought the momentum back to the Longford side.

Soon after Longford levelled the game with another try and conversion.

The Longford team then put in tremendous attacking effort in the last 20 minutes where Longford were camped on the Tullamore try line.  Longford also were awarded 2 penalties in the closing stages.  Tullamore defended well to keep us out.  Longford could have won this match, but their last and final try was held up in the final minute.  The final score was Tullamore 24-24 Longford.

Longford Secondary Schools Rugby

Longford secondary schools, Ard Scoil Phadraig, and Cnoc Mhuire, both Granard, and coached by Danny McHugh, played their first full contact game of the season on Friday last.  While some of the players already play at the club, for most of the lads it was their first taste of competitive match rugby.  That didn’t get in the way of producing a powerful performance from both sides.

From the off it was all action with both teams eager to showcase their skills they have developed over the last six weeks.

The handling by all players was excellent, and in particular the beginners who, for their first full contact game played with pace and style.

The game ended in a draw at 25-25 each so for this occasion there are no bragging rights.  This needs to be earned at some point in the future, so keep it up and be ready for the next derby game!

Huge credit to Longford Rugby clubs coach and firsts team captain, Danny McHugh, who has worked with both school’s junior player in developing their talents in recent weeks.  We look forward to seeing many of the players take up rugby at the club and keep active over the winter months.

Moyne

Elsewhere, Moyne Community school senior and junior teams were in action at a school’s development blitz in Edenderry on Wednesday.  Both sides performed very well on the day with the seniors recording 3 wins from 3 games.  Further grading blitz are to be held over the coming weeks.

St. Mel’s

St. Mel’s junior team are in action today, Wednesday, against Salesians College, Celbridge.  The game will be held at Longford Rugby club.  This is their second fixture in the Leinster Schools league following a good win in game one two weeks ago.

Mini Rugby

Our U9’s & U10’s braved the elements on Sunday morning and travelled to West Offaly Lions in Ferbane for a Midlands Blitz.  Teams from Birr, Mullingar, Midland Warriors, Tullamore, Roscrea & West Offaly Lions took part on the day and all acquitted themselves well.  Well done boys.

Our U6 U7 U8 U11 & U12 teams took to the training pitches in the pouring rain on Sunday morning.  Well done to all our minis this weekend.

As our senior teams were at home this weekend against Carlow RFC our Mini Mascot’s ahead of the match were Arianne Egan and Ailbhe O’Reilly.  Both of the girls play with our minis squads at U12 & U11 age groups.  The girls are pictured with team captain, Danny McHugh before kick off.  Thanks for supporting the team today girls

Boot room

Parents – we all know how quick the kids grow up and requirements to have a new pair of boots as they have outgrown the most recent, expensive pair.  Why not check out the hugely popular Boot room here at Longford rugby club where we have a self replenishing stock of replacement boots.  The idea is that you drop in a pair you no longer need and replace it with a pair that fits your child. That way your pair of boots doesn’t go to waste and someone else gets to benefit also, thus also helping someone else save a few Euros.

If you have any boots that you wish to donate or exchange, please bring them into minis training and drop off the office for the attention of Gerry Carty or Pauline Marlowe who will assist with selecting the replacement pair.  Boots should be clean, laces intact and no missing studs.  No blades will be taken in.

Please note it is not possible to guarantee there will be a suitable replacement available however we have rarely not had some to choose across a wide range of sizes.

URC Comment

Connacht played out a belter at the sportsground in defeating Scarlets on Friday night.  For a long period of the game, it was nip and tuck.  A yellow card for Connacht didn’t stop them taking control in the game and then two yellows for Scarlets was the end of their challenge.

Leinster took on Munster at the Aviva stadium on Saturday and for a while it was a close match. In the later stages the strength in depth saw off a spirited challenge from the Munster men.  Leinster now have a seven point lead over second placed Ulster who have one game in hand.

The international players selected for the Autumn international series will go to camp this week ahead of the first match against South Africa on 5th November.  This will give the extended squads an opportunity to press for valuable game time.
