CHAMPIONS – U18’s take down Naas to win Leinster Plate

Longford Captain Eoin Murtagh lifts the Plate

In the final action of the season, it was a mixed bag of results for the last two teams standing for Longford Rugby Club.  The U18 side ended the season as Leinster Plate champions in a thrilling contest against a Naas side who had beaten Longford 30-05 earlier in the season.  Indeed, this result was all the sweeter, as Naas back then felt the need to turn the screw by keeping a full team on the pitch as Longford had lost players to injury, even though they had the result in the bag!  The saying ‘it’s a long road that has no turn’ was certainly apt motivation, in the build up to this final.  Longford set the tone and dictated the pace for the entire contest, withstanding the strong fight-back from the Naas side, who desperately tried to get themselves back into contention.  Longford were so determined to reverse the previous result, that their resolute defending was some of the best by any Longford youth team all season.  Special mention to mentors, Jimmy Murphy, Michael Bannon and Danny McHugh whom have worked extremely hard all season to keep this group together.

Earlier at the same venue, Longford’s U17 side took on Mullingar in the U17 decider and for a long period were right in the game.  The tide turned in the second half, as Mullingar got the first try.  Missed knock-ons in later phases allowed Mullingar to score their second try.  Longford fought back and got their own score mid-way through the second half, however the Mullingar side went on to win from there as their fitness was that bit better on the day.

U18 Leinster Plate Final

Longford RFC 23-12 Naas, Report by Micheal Bannon

Sam Davis carries for Longford U18s v Naas

Longford took on Naas team in the Leinster U18 Plate final in Kilcock on Saturday the 23rd of April.

Naas who had beaten a strong Tullow team in their semi-final were strong favourites coming into the game. Longford who were aiming for their third win of the season overcame Carlow in their semi-final after a heroic performance.

Conditions were poor with heavy rainfall before and during the match which favoured the bigger Longford pack. Longford drew first blood with Padraig Boyle slotting over a penalty to make it 3-0 after 5mins.

Naas capitalised on a poor Longford exit and played it through the hands to score in the corner with their kicker landing the touchline conversion.

Longford managed to work a few phases in their half before Padraig Boyle chipped through and regathered to get Longford deep into the Naas half.  Once Longford got into Naas’s red zone the forwards came to life and started to gain ground with a number of pick and goes and balls off scum half Sam O’Rourke.  Eventually Naas could no longer soak up the pressure and Ireland u18 international Sam Mills went over the line with Padraig Boyle added the conversion to make it 10-3.

Longford continued to play the conditions with the boot of Padraig Boyle with some intricate kicks to put the Naas back three under pressure. Longford scored an almost identical try to their first with captain Eoin Murtagh touching down with Padraig Boyle getting the extras making it 17-7 going into the second half.

Longford management freshened the side up by bringing on David Bannon and John Boyle on both of whom had particularly strong games in defence with Bannon putting in some massive shots throughout the second half.

As the second half started the rain had stopped and Longford were playing up the hill. Longford new they would face a Naas onslaught, but Longford managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over through Padraig’s boot making it 20-7. Longford’s forwards managed to win a penalty thirty-five meters out from the Naas line.  Padraig Boyle kicked his finest penalty of the day making it 23-7.

Disaster stuck for Longford as after Naas pressure on Longford’s line, Adam Glennon received a yellow for a hand in the ruck.  Longford defence held out and managed to clear their lines from the following Naas attack.

Naas did eventually cross the Longford line with a fine move after severe pressure on the tiring Longford defence.  Lolu Adejinmi swapped places with Glennon in the bin for the final few minutes after a high tackle, but Longford withstood the kitchen sink been thrown at them and the referee blew the full-time whistle and Longford were crowned Leinster Plate champions.

Special mention to Patton, Davis and Hanley in the forwards and Byrne, Jude O’Rourke in the backs who had massive games in defence and at the breakdown.

Longford: 1 Lolu Adejinmi 2 Jack Patton 3 Sam Davis 4 Ciaran McNally 5 Seamus Hanley 6 Joel Gillanders 7 Sam Mills 8 Eoin Murtagh 9 Sam O’Rourke 10 Padraig Boyle 11 Adam Glennon 12 Jude O’Rourke 13 Kevin Byrne 14 David Sullivan 15 Daniel Egan 16 Ryan Britton 17 Rokas Macevicius 18 David Bannon 19 John Boyle

Leinster Development Pathway U18 Leinster squad selection

Longford’s Yaw Appiah has succeeded in being selected for the Leinster U18 club squad.  Yaw, who attends Wilsons Hospital in Multyfarnham, plays for the club U17 team and also a regular on the Midlands development squad.  The side defeated the Leinster schools squad in a challenge game last week, demonstrating the increasing quality being produced by clubs across the province.  We wish Yaw the best of luck with the squad.

Midlands Development pathway

Longford Ladies Rugby

There will be a significant change for Longford women’s rugby next season as Head Coach, Nuala McGoey hangs up her boots.  Nuala retires from coaching the ladies’ team after a combined 20 years with the team as player and coach.  Nuala’s input has brought the team from strength to strength over the years and will be missed by all.

Earlier this season Nuala commented, as part of a Women in Rugby piece for International Women’s Day,

‘Getting involved in coaching was a natural decision for me.

Having played rugby for the ladies’ team for a number of years, as I was getting close to retiring, there was an opportunity for a new senior coach.  There were never enough volunteers participating in ladies’ rugby and, I felt I could give something to the team.  After some consultation and encouragement l decided to take on the role which, at the time, kept some continuity for the team.  Experience is not absolutely necessary to be involved but it does help to have the knowledge from playing.  Every day is a learning day, you are always picking up something new.

My proudest coaching moment was the team getting promoted to Division Three and then winning the plate final.

I would say that the most notable change in the ladies’ side was going from having difficulty in fielding a team to the numbers growing steadily every year.  I remember how much I had gained from playing rugby over the years and all the friends I had made, and subsequently seeing the same thing happening for other players in the team through the years is really great to see.

As a coach, there are many challenges and you end up doing everything related to the team.  Club and teams need volunteers.  I would encourage anyone interested in ladies’ rugby to get involved at the club.

Just come along and speak to coaches and club staff.  There are always lots that need doing, from taking pictures, to match reports, making tea, marking the pitch etc.  Every little bit helps, and it is always enjoyable to be involved.’

Maria Kelleher, Ladies captain commenting on behalf of the Longford Ladies team –

‘We would like to thank Nuala for all her time and commitment over the past few years.  Nuala always instilled a sense of encouragement and guidance for us players. She enabled each player to trust in their ability.  Many of the players who started rugby in recent years wished they had started sooner, which is reflective of Nuala’s hard work.  Nuala worked tirelessly behind the scenes in getting a full squad in place each year and having the admin side of the team in order.  Her excellent dedication and work has not gone unnoticed and has been appreciated by each member of the ladies’ squad.  Nuala will be missed, and it will certainly be strange her not being there going forward.  We hope she will continue to follow the team and join us at the Sin Bin for a quiet one after games.

Longford Rugby Club Vice President and Director of Ladies Rugby, Karen Lennon also said, ‘Nuala has been a constant of Longford Ladies rugby since its foundation in 2006. As a player she was a formidable opponent, and I was always glad she was on our team – she was a mighty woman to turn over a ball or nick one against the head in a lineout.

It goes without saying that women’s rugby in Longford would not be where it is today without Nuala.  When there was difficulty in finding a coach, Nuala stepped in and has driven the team to the success it is today.  There are big shoes to fill to continue with Nuala’s great work.  I would like to thank Nuala for her hard work and dedication to Women’s Rugby in Longford.’

Club President, Donagh McDonnell commented, ‘Nuala McGoey has been a huge part of our club since I have been involved.  She has put in all the hard yards both as a player and as a coach, in conditions that were often less than ideal.  Without people like Nuala, the ladies’ game would not be thriving as it is today. The club owes Nuala a huge thanks and we hope that she will stay involved even if she is taking a step back from coaching.’

All in Longford Rugby Club wish Nuala the absolute best wishes for the future and extend our appreciation for her contribution throughout the years.

U16 Midlands League Final

Longford RFC 17-36 Mullingar

Longford U16’s fell at the final hurdle of the season as Mullingar too the Midlands League title on Saturday.  Mullingar took the lead on 6 minutes wit an unconverted try.  Longford applied pressure on the visitors after the restart with good Carrie’s into contact across the park.  The hard work was rewarded with a penalty on thirty metres which yielded three points from Senan Murphy.

Mullingar went in for two more tries from Midlands players, Peader Glennon and Jake Greene, as the hosts were slow to protect their own ball and gift the opposition cheap possession from which they were clinical.

Longford did not let the heads drop and fought to get themselves back up the pitch. A sweet cross field kick for the onrushing Jonathan Groenewald almost came off and indeed gave the home side the confidence to bring the game to Mullingar.  On the cusp of halftime, the hard work paid dividends as Mark Glynn dotted down to the right of the posts.  The conversion was good to go into the break 10-17 down.

The second half went aray quite early as Mullingar scored twice in the first ten minutes to extend out to a 10-29 lead. Longford still were not done and, but for poor handling on a couple of occasions we would have been a lot closer.  However, the lads kept plugging deep in opposition territory and eventually Mullingar conceded a penalty on the try line.  The set piece move straight off the training ground went to plan and Mark Glynn was over for his second try.  Longford should have kicked on from there as the momentum was building but again when diligegence was most needed, Longford failed to retain their own possession and allowed Mullgar back in for the final score.  The team should build on the positives from this season as they have done on last season.  Two end of seasons finals has been a big step up and hopefully we can go one better next season and claim silverware.

Longford: James Cosgrove, Mark Glynn, Tadhg McCauley, Joseph Davidson, Ryan Spollen, Danny Kelly, Conor O’Grady, Aaron Hopkins, Derek Belton, Harry Byrne, Shane McGuigan, Mel Mulligan, Senan Murphy, Donnacha Golden, Tom Murray, Darragh Walsh, Jonathan Groenewald, Daniel Corr, Jamie Donohue, Jack Brogan,  Gift Orbrehor, Dan Donohue

Leinster Provincial Towns Plate

Longford’s season ended on Easter Sunday when beaten by Athy in the Provincial Towns plate.

Conditions were tricky with a stiff breeze blowing in to the Demesne end, but the promised rain held off.

Athy got off to a quick start with a penalty and try putting them ten nil up. Longford had lots of good field position but only earned three points from sustained periods of play in the Athy half. A piece of good fortune saw Athy score their next try when a mistimed pass ricocheted off the receiving players head into open country. This was a big blow, but the game looked dead before half time when weak tackling allowed Athy in off a goal line drop out.

The message at half time was to come out swinging and a 24-3 score became 24-20 with Robbie Shaw darting over from a quick penalty near the try line and Benny McManus dotting down. Ryan McHugh added the extras while tacking on a penalty in what was a faultless kicking display in tricky conditions.

Longford had the momentum and looked sure to score again with a maul trucking towards the line but were adjudged to have pulled down their own maul. Athy were delighted to get a scrum and Longford were penalised at the following breakdown losing a man to the bin. Momentum swung again and Athy moved up the field to score and put the game beyond doubt adding a further try running out deserving winners on a score line of 37-20.

It is always disappointing to lose but there is more to building a culture than results and it was especially pleasing to see four young lads make their 1sts debut with Cormac McDonagh starting at centre in what was an impressive debut. He was joined off the bench by Pete Kiernan and Eoin Murtagh in the backrow with Padraig Boyle coming on at fullback.

It will be interesting to watch the progression that all these talented lads make next season.

U16 Midlands League Semifinal

Ravens 10-14 Longford RFC

After the recent loss in the Leinster league final, it was straight back into semifinals action for our U16 side as the took on Ravens in Birr on Saturday. Having won the league fixture in a high scoring home game against Ravens earlier this season, the Longford team expected nothing less than a battle from the hosts to return the compliment and with it take their place in the upcoming Midlands League final. A battle is exactly what they got!

Ravens went straight into a forwards contest, keeping it tight, hoping to power their way to scoring. Longford defended strongly to repel the attack and drive Ravens back into their own half.

Both sides created chances with the hosts having more wasted opportunities. On 20 minutes, Ravens eventually got the opener wide on the right. Under the posts, we refocused our efforts on a kick chase tactic. The response was immediate as Darragh Walsh pounced on the loose ball from our own restart. He popped it up to an alert Conor O’Grady, who spotted a gap and accelerated through from twenty metres to score. What a response! Any confidence the home side had from their own score was just wiped out! The conversion was added to give Longford a 05-07 halftime lead.

Longford needed to up the ante in the second half. The tackle rate remained high as Ravens carried hard into our twenty-two. Longford were defending well, turning it over and clearing well with boot to ball to keep the play down field, forcing Ravens to have to start from deep again each time. Our own discipline slipped as we conceded some unnecessary offside penalties to give Ravens field position. From this they got their second score to go back into the lead. Stern words under the posts were heeded as the Longford side chased absolutely everything with Shane McGuigan, Darragh Walsh and Conor O’Grady leading the way. Jonathan Groenewald was playing more infield to offer options and Ravens were scrambling to cover the different points of attack from Longford. With five minutes remaining, Darragh Walsh took a pass outside the twenty-two, and rounded the fading defence to score Longford’s second try. Senan Murphy tagged on his second conversion and Longford were into a four-point lead.

Ravens restarted and Longford gathered cleanly. From there the boys punted back to keep play in the opposition half. In the last-minute Ravens did get to the red zone to give themselves a chance but their own indiscipline, throughout the second half, again cost them the opportunity and with it also the game. Longford take the win and earn a shot at a Midlands league title next week.

Notable for Longford were Darragh Walsh at 13, Shane McGuigan and Conor O’Grady. Danny Kelly was immense in defence while Aaron Hopkins played a blinder after a long injury layoff. Mark Glynn was excellent at hooker and Jonathan Groenewald continues to be a menace to opposing defences. Today was a team effort with only fifteen players available. Perhaps the most impressive part was that the heads never dropped and that the players found a way to win after going behind in each half.

Longford: James Cosgrove, Mark Glynn, Tadhg McCauley, Danny Kelly, Conor O’Grady, Aaron Hopkins, Harry Byrne, Shane McGuigan, Mel Mulligan, Senan Murphy, Donnacha Golden, Tom Murray, Darragh Walsh, Jonathan Groenewald, Daniel Corr

Midlands Representative teams

The U16 Shane Horgan Cup fifth round took place on Wednesday in Donnybrook. Longford were represented by four players in the Midlands side. Shane McGuigan and Jonathan Groenewald started with Mark Glynn and Senan Murphy coming in from the bench. MCGuigan was a constant menace throughout with Groenewald stretching the Northeast side on the wing. The game was secured in the second half with two quick tries from the Midlands to round off the tournament on a high.

Midlands Girls representative

The trials for next season’s Midlands Sarah Robinson squad took place last week with eight of Longford’s girls in the reckoning. All of Ava Horkan Shauna Hannon Andrea Nolan Mia Rowan Anna O’Connor Isabella Larkin Casey Foran Diana Izekor will be hoping to have the nod from the selection panel in the coming weeks.

Rugby Tour

Throughout its history, Longford RFC has been an enthusiastic host for Touring teams with in excess of 50 Clubs/sides having visited us over the years. With the huge increase in the cost of travel, the advent of professionalism and, more recently, the appearance of Covid, rugby tours (both by the Club and to the Club) have been in decline but it is something which we are keen to reverse and that process begins this coming Saturday when we host the Dunvant RFC (Wales) U15 squad who are over here on a short Easter Tour, staying in Centre Parcs.

Club Bio

Dunvant Rugby Football Club are a Welsh rugby union club based in DunvantSwansea in South Wales and are a member of the Welsh Rugby Union. They competed in the Welsh Championship for the first time in 2016/2017, but were relegated back to the WRU Division One West the same season.

No less than Longford RFC in our Community, Dunvant Rugby Club has been an important part of Community life in Dunvant, Killay and surrounding areas of Swansea West ever since it is foundation in 1887 (co-incidentally just a year before the founding of Longford RFC). Dunvant RFC are extremely proud of being the first Village Club to reach the highest echelons of Welsh Rugby, Division 1 (now known as the Premiership) using home-grown talent, before the game turned professional.

Playing much of their early rugby in the local parks, they decided in 1969 to buy thirteen acres of a local field known as “Albert’s Bottoms”, today proudly known as “Broadacre”, where they have three full size pitches, some great facilities and one of the best playing surfaces in Wales. The Club joined the West Wales Rugby Union in 1978/9 in Section E, and in only nine years rose to Section A. With the formation of League Rugby in 1990/1, Dunvant entered into Division 2 (now Div 3) and won it at the first attempt. Two seasons later in Division 2, Dunvant won twenty-one out of twenty-two games to enter the top flight Division 1 for the 1993/4 season with the giants of Llanelli, Swansea, Cardiff etc. Across their seasons in Division 1 they beat them all except Cardiff (27-27 draw) and Llanelli.  An amazing journey through eight Divisions of rugby in only fifteen years. Dunvant have even played international games against Japan in 1993 (L23-24) and Romania in 1999(L10-29).

Longford “Seal the Deal” to secure Division 1B status for next season

By Mark Quinn at North Kildare

02/04/2022 Leinster League Division 1B/2A Promotion/Relegation Playoff

Longford RFC 27 – Clondalkin RFC 16

“Fortune favours the brave” – and this has never been truer than Longford RFC’s Senior Men’s journey this season as they defied all logical odds to retain their status among Leinster Division 1B. For context, after 6 rounds of the 14 round competition format, the team sat shell shocked at the bottom of the table with no wins on the board. With 8 rounds remaining, the team had to plot a course to survival that would require a minimum of 5 wins as well as a mix of bonus points to pull off the comeback of comebacks. Last Sunday’s events in Dundalk completed the above “Houdini act”, with Longford moving off the foot of the table for the first time all season in the 3rd minute of injury time on the final day of the regular season. However, the reward was not automatic safety but a place in a once off Play Off v the 2nd placed team in Division 2A – Clondalkin RFC. This was now essentially a Winner Takes All Final.

On Sunday past, the final episode of what has been an epic script played out. The team arrived at the neutral North Kildare venue focused and determined to deliver the win required to retain their place among the highly competitive Division 1B. A large crowd was in attendance and the scene was set. In balmy Spring conditions, the match got underway to a ferocious early intensity. Both sides showed clear early intent that this was going to be a hard-won match and whoever was to take the spoils would need to earn it. It was Longford who landed the first blow on 4 minutes after a superb break from Kieran O’Gorman was initially continued by his back-row partner in crime Tom Gilheany to launch Longford deep into the Clondalkin 22. The referee signalled a penalty to Longford from the ensuing breakdown which Ryan McHugh sent straight between the posts. 3-0 to Longford and an ideal start. However, Clondalkin showed immediately from the restart that they intended to take the game back to Longford and displayed some silky phases to keep the men in black honest. Indeed, it was Clondalkin who’s efforts were next rewarded via converted penalties on the 8th and 14th minutes to swing the scoreboard 3-6 in their favour. Longford knew they were in for a battle.

To their credit, Longford immediately upped the tempo and delivered some excellent rugby in equal measure through both the Forwards and Backs. On 18 minutes it was Longford Centre, George McDermott, who took matters into his own hands to cross the Clondalkin whitewash for a crucial opening try under the posts. Ryan McHugh converted to return the scoreboard 10-6 in Longford’s favour.

Longford had to defend bravely for the following 20 minutes as Clondalkin launched wave after wave of attack in their effort to get back into the game. Rioch Farrell and Diarmuid Masterson both landed thundering hits in this period to negate the Clondalkin momentum. Both sides displayed a ferocious commitment at the point of contact, with the ball swinging from one side of the pitch to the other in a terrific high tempo. Up front it was Podge Farrell, Mark McHugh & Liam Brady who set the foundation in the set piece with David Geelan & Benny McManus leading the Longford effort in close contact open play. Packie Molloy pulled the strings at No.8 as the forwards began to dominate their opponents.

As half time approached, Colm Glynn earned a penalty for Longford after a brilliant jackal at the breakdown. Ryan McHugh converted the resulting penalty to further increase the Longford lead to 13-6. A minute later in first half injury time the Longford lead was further enhanced after a superb finish from flying winger Rioch Farrell who was put through after some blistering play from his teammates. Ryan McHugh converted to give Longford an 18-6 lead at the break.

The 2nd half opened to an erratic pattern for Longford as despite their healthy and deserved lead, the ball was not sticking with several unforced errors leading to frustration among the Men in Black. This gave Clondalkin renewed belief that they could get back into the game and to their credit they never stopped in their efforts to erode the gap built up by Longford. However, after a sustained period of pressure it was Longford who dealt the next blow on 57 minutes as they surged up field to attack the Clondalkin line. After a number of intensive phases by the forwards, it was Robbie Shaw who launched the crucial and ultimately game winning attack as the ball was swung wide through the backs. The hugely talented Bran Harte smartly fixed the last covering Clondalkin defenders before releasing Player of the Match, Rioch Farrell clear on the wing for his 2nd try of the afternoon. Ryan McHugh landed a superb conversion from the touchline to further enhance Longford lead to 27-6.

Longford had to absorb a difficult last 23 minutes from Clondalkin who threw everything they had at Longford with nothing to lose. Matters were not helped during this period by 2 yellow cards that stretched the Longford line when really the game should have been seen out. To their full credit, Clondalkin landed 2 late tries of their own to improve the score line to 27-16. Indeed, this is how it finished as the referee finally blew his whistle to the relief of all in attendance.

And so the “Great Escape” was completed. The Players, Coaches and Management deserve huge credit for their dedication and commitment to the cause this season. They never gave up and have proven many wrong this season. After a hugely character-building campaign, this squad will ultimately benefit from this journey. New players have been blooded, the overall game plan has been developed and ultimately a very unique bond has been created among this group.

Roll on next September when they will do it all again – proudly in Leinster Division 1B.

Leinster league roundup

U18 Longford vs Carlow

Longford under 18s took on Carlow in the under 18s plate semi final in Wilson’s Hospital last Wednesday night. The side met both home and away in the league with Carlow winning convincingly on both occasions. Longford have had a tough season and have taken some beatings along the way and have relied on the generosity of the under 17’s to help bolster the squad who were unfortunately cup tied for this competition. In the previous round Longford put in a workman like performance against a Raven’s team 30-5.

The much-fancied Carlow team started the game off with intent kicking the ball into the right corner pinning Longford back by winning a penalty and electing to kick to the corner instead of the taking the three points. Longford defended the lineout and maul well but struggled to exit their twenty-two and conceded an early try as the heavens opened.

Carlow continued to pile on the pressure to Longford as Carlow won an excellent 50/22 and from the proceeding lineout managed to score a try as Longford once again failed to get out of their 22 leaving the scores 12-0

Carlow’s back was up, and the wind was at their back and were getting all the breaks. They scored a third try after a knock on was missed by the official leaving 19-0. At this point the outlook was grim for the Longford side but even as results have not gone their way, they have always showed heart and great resilience throughout the season.

Longford finally got possession in the Carlow half. They started playing through some phases and won a penalty just outside the Carlow 22 and elected for a midfield scum. Longford won clean ball and Padraig Boyle passed to the mercurial Kevin Byrne who not for the first this season produced a big play and took his man on the outside and crashed over the line. Boyle made the conversion. 19-7

This Carlow side who are in the semi-finals of the premier division showed their worth and scored a fourth try to make it 24-7 to put the game out of Longford’s reach.

Longford restarted and managed to gain a lineout on Carlow’s 10-meter line. Jack Patton who had a fine game threw the ball to captain Murtagh who won clean ball and played it off the top to Sam O’rourke who then gave it to Boyle who hit the pod of Joel Gillanders and David Bannon in the centre of the park. Gillanders made a huge line break of thirty meters and gave the pass to Bannon who finished of the move excellently for the scored of the night. Boyle added the conversion to make it 24-14 at half time.

Longford started off the second half as they finished the first. Bannon, Byrne, and David Sullivan put in some big shots to put Carlow under pressure. Longford won a scrum and Murtagh picked from the base making good yardage. After some pick and goes the powerful Lolu Adejinmi crashed over the line. Boyle added the extras to make it 24-21.

The game between became a nervy one as both teams sought to find field position with Boyle and full-back Dan Egan getting the rub of the green with their kicks. Unfortunately, flanker Bannon got the bin for a high tackle, but Longford managed the card well and kept Carlow scoreless throughoutthis period.

With the game in the balance Longford played some of the best rugby they have played all year and started it throwing offloads that the Baa-baas would be proud of.

Once Longford returned to the Carlow 22 the forwards came to life going through the phases with substitute RokasMacevicius crashing over the line in his second game for the club with Boyle making it 4/4 to make it 24-28.

With 15 minutes left in the game Longford continued the attacked and Lolu was held up on the Carlow line to almost put the game out of reach. Carlow came up the pitch for one last dash at the Longford line, but the Longford defence held out with some phenomenal maul defence.

The referee blew the final whistle to the elation of the Longford supporters and management on the side lines for an upset for the ages.

Special mention to Ryan Brittion, Ciaran Mcnally and Sheamus Hanley who put in serious graft thought the game in the pack and Jude O’Rourke, Sam O’Rourke and Adam Glennon who tackled like their lives depended on it during the game.

Longford await ether Naas or Tullow in the final with the venue and date to be decided.

U17 Longford 17 – New Ross 7

The Longford U17’s have had a busy few weeks.  After a heroic display against Athy in the Leinster League Final, they had a Leinster Plate Quarter Final victory the following Saturday against an improving Midland Warriors side, to play against New Ross in the plate semi-final being hosted by Portarlington last Saturday. Victory in this game would result in a plate final against local rivals Mullingar.

The Longford lads played against the wind in the first half and the rain had just held off as the game commenced.  The men in black had fire in the belly and went straight at the New Ross defence.  Although Longford had narrowly beaten this south east team last season, the men from Tadhg Furlong’s home club had been victorious in their previous two encounters, so this was going to be a tight game. Longford kept driving forward and after 7 minutes Stephen Oates broke through a gap to score under the posts and Conor Mulligan, despite the wind, converted to put the Longford men into the lead.  Instead of inspiring then to on, the Longford team started to sit back, with some silly errors letting the New Ross lads get back into the game.

As a result of one of their attacks, Diarmuid Rawle was cogged in a very delicate place.  He came off to get some private medical attention but was unable to stop the bleeding and he was unable to apply a band aid to the area of the rupture.  He had to be replaced but hopefully he will be up to it in the next game.  Due to the lack of backs cover on the replacements, as Ronan’s mantra was “we had to adapt.”  So, Cian Gavin came on and Olan Bracken placed out on the wing. New Ross kept the pressure on and as they drove for the line they went over for their try, and they converted.  Now on the front foot, they kept pressing, they kicked over the top for James Grehan to gain procession and in the resulting ruck, as he was positioning himself on the ground and New Ross player fell on his knee and James’s day on the pitch was over.  Cathal Ghee came in to slot in, in the front row.  The lads held out through some great defensive work to finish the half with the score drawn 7-7.

After a brief half time talk where we emphasised that a loss today would mean the end of the season, the lads came out more focused, and as one supportive parent put it “they seem to have gotten their mo-jo back.”  After some great backs play called by our General Rian Browne at out half, the ball was passed by him to Diarmuid Glennon to Alex Forde, with Diarmuid on the loop causing an overlap on the wing and now with winger Christopher Trautt on the ball spinting for the line, however, the pacey New Ross full back, tackled Chris just as he was getting into his stride.  He took a hard knock when coming to the ground, so he had to be replaced by Cathal Byrne, with him coming into the front row.  But for the next 20 minutes it was a battle between two evenly matched teams. Prop Yaw Appiah switched into the backs as second centre and Alex going out onto the wing.  Longford were now camped in the New Ross 22 and with Yaw now making some great runs at their defence in his new role, the gaps started to appear.  Jack O’Hara was quick to exploit one of these gaps and as he received the ball on their twenty-two, he sprinted through one of the gaps to score.

This score was especially important, as it now meant that New Ross had to chase the game, as a draw was not good enough for them. With the “result on the day” rule meaning that, as a result of Longford scoring the first try, the game would be awarded to the Longford side if it were drawn at full time.  For the last 10 minutes, New Ross tried to get out of their half. It was difficult as Cathal Byrne, like a man processed, made some great carries, as a result of one drive New Ross got the ball and kicked for the touch, it was short, Olan Bracken retrieved the ball, ran around his defender, and went to score his try in the corner.  The ref blew the final whistle few minutes later to leave the final score at 17-7 and another final for the young Longfordians.

It was not the prettiest of games, with some basic errors being still made, our structured play still needs some work, and some “walking” at times during the game.  The forwards played well, Oran has adapted to his position as hooker, winning the scrums and throwing well in the lineout.  Yaw played his best game in the black jersey and excelled in the space when he went into the backs.  Jack and Sean Molihan were the engine house in the scrum and lifted brilliantly in the line, defensively they tackled away and carried the ball well.  John Sheridan was fantastic in the line out, being strong to say, “put me up,” on the New Ross throw in, “and I’ll take their ball” and he did.  Stephen Oates was definitely up for man of the match.  In attack, he drove straight at the opposition defence, crossing the gain line every time, and in defence, he rarely missed a tackle.  They controlled the game and showed how quick ball by Conor out to the backs can create spaces out on the wings, with Diarmuid, Rian and Alex deceiving the opposition (and some of our forwards) with their loop moves.  However, if Stephen Oates was not man of the match, then second for that accolade would be Caelum Mc Gee.  He made some brilliant cover tackles to prevent New Ross from scoring and came into the line to create overlaps, with also him covering the back field when New Ross tried to kick. The last shout out is for our three replacements, the two Cathals and Rian.  They are played brilliant when they came on and were an enormous impact on the game and showed how vital they are to have in any game.

We now are in the plate final to be played on the 22nd of April and a venue yet to be decided, in a derby against local rivals Mullingar.  It has been a good season for us, and it would be great to top it off with some Leinster silverware.  We wish our U18’s the best of luck as they made it to the plate final after a heroic victory against a fancied Carlow team, coming back for 7-24 and half time to win 28-24.  Their win, and comeback, was also an inspiration to our U17’s lads.  The U16’s are so vying in the plate with a semi-final to be played.  It is great to see so many youth teams still playing in Leinster competitions at this stage of the season.

Longford win thriller to send League comeback into final fixture of the season

By Mark Quinn at Longford Rugby Club

Leinster League Division 1B Longford RFC 20 Athy RFC 16

Longford hosted in-form Athy RFC on Sunday last in a “do or die” fixture in terms of the scramble to stay in Leinster League Division 1B. A win was simply non-negotiable and again like recent fixtures the squad depth was tested to its limit with numerous 1st squad players unavailable due to injury. The odds were stacked against the home side, but this team has an admirable “never say die” attitude and as they took the pitch a laser like focus was noticeable.

The clouds began to gather over Longford Rugby Club as the kick-off approached and on que the heavens opened as the game got underway. An immediate contest for the ball between both packs was in full swing when the sound of the referee’s whistle sounded to Athy’s benefit. A penalty was awarded just inside the Longford half which was slotted over by the Athy Outhalf. Longford were down 3-0 with 1 minute on the clock. Longford responded on 5 minutes with a well fielded ball by the excellent Ryan McHugh at fullback who ran hard back at Athy before launching a sweet spiral down into the Athy 22. Tom Gilheany led the chase and caught the defending Athy player over his own line to force an attacking 5-meter scrum to Longford. Unfortunately, the ball was knocked on in the phases that followed but the line was drawn and Athy were put on notice early in terms of Longford’s intent in the game. Indeed, from a driving Lineout maul immediately afterwards, Longford appeared to be over only for the Referee to judge Seamus McKeown to be held up.

However, on 15 minutes Longford were finally awarded for their excellent early pressure when Tom Gilheany blocked down an attempted clearance by the Athy Outhalf. As the ball spun on the turf behind the Athy try line, it was the in-form David Geelan who pounced first to secure the opening try of the game. Ryan McHugh converted to deservedly swing the scoreboard 7-3 in Longford’s favour. Athy closed the gap to 7-6 on 19 minutes after Longford were harshly penalised at a ruck. Indeed, Athy were very fortunate that the referee missed an obvious act of foul play in the same incident that really should have resulted in a penalty to Longford. However, Longford again displayed composure to secure a penalty immediately from the restart of play which Ryan McHugh landed from distance. The scoreboard moved to 10-6 to Longford.

The next eight minutes were frantic as both teams upped the tempo and landed blow after blow without breaking either line. On reflection it was perhaps the home team who were guilty of lacking the cutting edge after several visits to the Athy 22 were frustrated by either poor execution or the determination of Athy’s defence. An incident took place on 28 minutes when a Longford player was pinned to the ground after play moved on. Several Athy players took part in a scuffle with the single Longford player which really should have resulted in a penalty to Longford – however it was bizarrely Longford who were penalised when Packie Molloy was shown a very harsh yellow for simply breaking up the incident. Longford now had to weather the storm created by the 1-man disadvantage to Half Time and did so superbly. To their huge credit it was Longford who emphatically closed the first half with a statement of intent when Ali McCormack secured possession from the lineout and the excellent Mark McHugh crashed over the Athy try line off a driving maul. Ryan McHugh again converted – 17-9 to the home side at the break.

The battle didn’t lose any intensity in the second half as both sides continued to run the ball hard at each other. In the forwards Seamus McKeown, David Geelan, Kieran O’Gorman and Packie Molloy in particular were putting in huge shifts. However, it was perhaps Mark McHugh and ultimate Player of the Match Tom Gilheany who in tandem caused most havoc with ferocious intensity in their line speed and dynamic defence. The backs showed similar intensity with both Colm Glynn & George McDermott forming a very well-balanced centre partnership that was well serviced all day by a resurgent Danny McHugh at Outhalf. Ryan McHugh was imperious all game at Full Back and the ever improving Rioch Farrell has a very solid outing on the wing. It is hugely encouraging that collectively the team are playing with a far improved shape and application of the new systems introduced by coach Henry Bryce this season.

Longford were awarded another penalty on 56 minutes which Ryan McHugh sent straight between the posts to give the home side an extended, and deserved lead of 20-9. Athy did strike back however on 78 minutes with a converted try after several waves of pressure. The scoreboard moved to a dangerous 20-16 score line with what those in attendance thought was the final play of the game. The referee however indicated a restart and Athy went for broke, launching several waves of attack before thankfully they knocked the ball on. With that the final whistle sounded much to the relief of players and spectators alike – Longford had done it!

Eyes however immediately moved to events elsewhere as the result of the Mullingar v Wicklow game was eagerly awaited. Unknown to most however, that fixture bizarrely kicked off a full 30 minutes after their scheduled 3pm start time which meant that for 30 minutes nobody knew if Longford heroics on the day were going to be enough to push their fate into the final day. Longford needed Mullingar to lose in order to keep them in our sights going into the final round of fixtures on March 25th. Indeed, Mullingar took the lead in their fixture after the match had ended in Longford and the most anxious of waits began to see if Wicklow could do us a massive favour. Remarkably they did just that, taking the win in the final phase of play in that game which meant that Longford are still alive in terms of the great escape.

Longford’s final game is away to Dundalk in an absolutely must win fixture where only a bonus point win will do coupled with a Mullingar defeat in their away trip to Athy on the same day. The aim is to exchange paces with Mullingar with the potential reward a play off against the runner up of Division 2a which currently looks like being either Clondalkin or Coolmine RFC. If ever a season went down to the wire this is it. This team knows what now has to be done and are determined to do it. Never say never…

Dundalk travelled with impressive numbers on their squad.  Longford welcomed new players, Diana Izekor and Charlize Haugh to an ever-increasing U16 panel, showing the growth of women’s rugby in both Longford and Leinster.

The game was even at 12 points each going into the second half.  After the break, it was a bit more stop-start, and with a few injuries, the Longford side were forced into some reshuffling of players and positions.  Longford were impressive in the scrum with Shauna Hannon causing upset at No.2 and also scrum-half, Niamh Brady, keeping her counterpart under pressure.  Captain Isabella Larkin caused trouble for the visitors all across the pitch both in attack and defence.  The tackling and counter rucking of the homeside was impressive, however a few small mistakes saw the Longford girls lose out 19-31 in the end

U14 Girls

Longford 36-33 Wolves

The U14 girls welcomed wolves on Saturday for what turned out to be a fantastic  game between both teams.

Wolves were quick to start but Longford were quickly able to turn over the ball.  Emma and Sydni took some big tackles and Longford slowly edged forward.  Wolves had the 1st scrum of the game and were quick to outpace the Longford side scoring the try but missed conversion.  It wasn’t long before Wolves had their second try, and this time it was converted.

The Longford girls did not give up,  and in fact were just about to start playing themselves, with Abbey chasing what was going to be Wolves 3rd try, preventing it and putting the pressure back on the visitors.  Both teams were well matched, Longford from deep and with quick hands moving the ball out the back, scored.

As half time approached the Longford  girls were not done and Lara McWeeney charged through the Wolves’ defence, Holly McKenna took it up and was stopped just short, but Avril Murtagh was there to drive over for the try.

Sydni Sheridan carrie’s for Longford U14’s

Second half the Longford girls hit the ground running with a good score & conversion.  The Wolves girls were not giving up, and they soon ran in another try of their own.  Both teams fought hard.  Nicole Charters powered her way past the defence passing the ball to Lillie Dowd crossing the line before Wolves hit back yet again.  This match was so close, Longford were behind but in the last moments Longford fought hard and were over the line and converted to claim a fantastic win.

Final score: Longford 36-33 Wolves.

That way your pair of boots doesn’t go to waste and someone else gets to benefit also, thus also helping someone else save a few Euros.

If you have any boots that you wish to donate or exchange, please bring them into minis training and drop off the office for the attention of Gerry Carty or Pauline Marlowe who will assist with selecting the replacement pair.  Boots should be clean, laces intact and no missing studs.  No blades will be taken in.

Please note it is not possible to guarantee there will be a suitable replacement available however we have rarely not had some to choose across a wide range of sizes.

Joy for Senior Ladies in Midland Plate Final, Senior Men lose out to Tullow, Youths/Minis reports…

By Padraig Murphy Longford RFC PRO Ph: 087 6063587 Email:  lrfconnects@gmail.com

19/02/2023 Leinster League 1B Longford 08 Tullow 24

Longford returned to League action on Sunday firmly rooted to the bottom of Division 1B.  Nothing but a win was required to narrow the gap to the second from bottom team.  With a good start from Tullow, Longford were under pressure early for the first few minutes until we were eventually relieved with knock on to end the Tullow phases on 4 minutes. The ensuing scrum was then reversed for a crooked put in from Longford, something both sides were to learn was a bug bear for the referee throughout the game.  Further pressure from Tullow saw them camped on the Longford line to end with a try on 10 minutes.  As the conversion missed the score was 00-05 to the visitors.

Longford then made some good headway from restart.  We had good link play between back and forwards with big carries from Bryce, Gorman, and Brady.  The pressure was rewarded with penalty on 15 minutes, with a successful kick from the reliable boot of Ryan McHugh. 03-05

From there it was an end-to-end exchange of possession for next 10 mins as both sides probed into each other’s half.  Tullow were awarded penalty bringing play to 5m line.  Longford challenged strongly and with some excellent defending managed to get a clearance kick to bring play out to the 10m line.  Tullow attempted to go forward from the  line out, but in doing so, committed a penalty infringement to allow Longford another kick for touch.  Longford infringed at the next lineout as the ref deemed us to be crossing, giving Tullow a penalty kick to touch just inside 22.

Longford made 2 changes at this point as Eoin O’Reilly came in for Lam Brady and Cormac Casey came in for David Connelly.

Longford managed to turn over possession and with good go forward ball for Gorman and Gilheany we earned a line-out just inside tullow 22.  In a well-executed maul towards the near touchline, Tullow defended well conceded another penalty, earning the No7 a yellow card.  Off the next line out Longford again carry hard.  Bryce shipped the ball out to Gorman who put Diarmuid Masterson into space to cross for a fine try.  Ryan was unsuccessful with the conversion and thus the last play of half saw Longford go into the break leading 08-05.

With all to play for, Longford start the brighter in the second half. Tullow take advantage of a knock on to clear their lines out of the 22.  Masterson then does well to chase kick and secure possession for again Longford.  However, Tullow work hard to win the ball back and again its Longford’s turn to defend.  A Tullow miscommunication give Longford a line-out in their own 22 only for our own cross messages gives Tullow possession and in for try on 52 mins to take the lead once again.  Longford 08-12 Tullow.

On 55 minutes, Longford kick to touch to bring play just inside 22.  With another well-formed driving maul from the line-out, Tullow collapsed for a Longford penalty and ensuing line out on 5m line.  Longford pressured the Tullow line.  Despite all the great work, with equally good defending Longford were pinged for holding on too long, allowing Tullow clear to just outside their 22.  Tullow managed to gain possession and exploit the near side to run play deep into Longford territory and on 65 minutes, Tullow cross again to go 08-19 up.

An excellent Ryan McHugh catch and carry from deep drove Longford back into Tullow territory.  We managed to get back to pressure the opposition line with several strong carries, however, wit the aid of plenty of offside players, Tullow somehow managed to turn possession and once again rally down the pitch.

Tullow crossed for a try once again and on the failed conversion kick, brought a close to the game, finishing 08-24 to Tullow.

For many, the result didn’t reflect the outstanding effort from the Longford boys.  With so many bodies on the extended injury list, particularly forwards, it was probably a tall order to get the required result on the day, however, those that took to the pitch left it all out there.

Longford again have a break in league action until March 15th when highly ranked Athy visit before a trip away to Dundalk.  Both Dundalk and Cill Dara claimed vital wins this weekend to push themselves closer to safety on the league table.  We need full points in the final two fixtures and results elsewhere to go in our favour.  Never say Never!

Ladies’ 2022/23 Season.

Longford Ladies claimed the Midland Plate in a powerful performance away to Tullamore on Saturday night.

Tullamore 00-47 Longford

Longford headed to Tullamore last Saturday night to play in the Midland League Plate Final against the home team.  Longford received the kick off and put in a few good phases with forwards and backs getting involved.  The first 10 mins had both teams fighting hard for possession, but it was Longford who struck first with a great break from out half Megan Banahan to score with Tegan Evans adding the conversion.  From the kick off Longford controlled possession with the backline making some great breaks before captain Maria Kellaher used her power and pace to go over in the corner for a try with Tegan Evans putting in an incredible kick to add the 2 points.  Tara Gilna and Amanda Sheridan were working well in the line outs securing clean ball to attack from.  Longford were using their kicking game to good effect and forcing Tullamore into knock ons, from the scrum Megan passed to Leona who off loaded to Tegan who popped the ball to the on-rushing Michelle Mulvey who out paced everyone to score with Tegan converting. Tullamore came back at Longford and forced their way into the Longford 22, but the defence held firm with everyone working hard. Some great work at ruck time saw Longford steal possession on numerous occasions. Jessica Stewart, Rebeka Stavuse Jasmine Smyth Roisin Shaw Dora Ledwith were putting in some serious tackles and great breaks around the rucks. From one of these steals the ball came out to fullback Rachel O Farrell who kick chased only to be obstructed but Tegan managed to get to the ball first and run in for a try which she converted. With that the referee blew for half time with Longford leading 28- 00.

Longford introduced subs Mary Sheridan and Amy Molloy in the front row for the start of the second half. Longford started the second half well forcing Tullamore into errors, from a knock on, Michelle Mulvey gathered a messy ball to run half the pitch to score under the posts with the conversion added. Longford were putting some lovely phases together with forwards and backs interlinking, Amy Molloy making several powerful breaks, Longford introduced Amanda Ryan, Aoife Coleman and Caoimhe Baskett. Tullamore were on the attack, but Rebeka Stavuse was up quick in defence and intercepted the ball she popped it to Emma Dardis who whipped it to Maria who powered forward before passing to Samantha McHale who off loaded to Megan and with a great hand off went over for a try. Tullamore had their purple patch but just couldn’t break the Longford defence.  The last try of the match was scored by Tegan Evens who put in a grubber kick that got half blocked, but a clever kick ahead saw Tegan touch the ball down over the line. The final score was 47 to 0.

Mini Rugby

This weekend’s U6 to U8 Midlands Blitz was held in Longford, catering for teams from Mullingar and Tullamore. We had 80+ children from U6-U8 age groups taking part in games on Saturday morning.

U12 update

Our U12 team travelled to Buccaneers for a challenge game, and they displayed their finest rugby of the season so far. They competed for every ball and some very fine passing and handling produced some fine scores and eventually winning out on the day.  We would like to thank our hosts for a very enjoyable morning and an even finer display of rugby. We’ll done to all.

U11 Away Blitz – Mullingar Rugby Club.

Our U11’s travelled to Mullingar playing teams from Tullamore, Mullingar, and Edenderry.

The Longford U11s played two great games on Saturday morning in Mullingar against Tullamore and Mullingar.  All 16 Longford players got plenty of game time across the two games with some excellent individual performances on display again.  The team finished really strongly against a good Mullingar team, where the second half from Longford produced a fantastic team performance, scoring 3 excellent tries.  Well done team!

Delicious sandwiches and refreshments post-match were very welcome and enjoyed by the team – a big thank you to Mullingar RFC for their hospitality and a great blitz.

Boot room

Parents – Why not check out the hugely popular Boot room here at Longford rugby club where we have a self replenishing stock of replacement boots.  You drop in a pair you no longer need and replace it with a pair that fits your child.

12/02/2023 Provincial Towns Cup Longford 10-18 Tullamore

By Karen Lennon at CPL Park

The Leinster league took a backseat as the Towns Cup competition kicked off on Sunday.

Longford welcomed near neighbours Tullamore 2nds to CPL Park in the first round of the Provincial Towns cup.

The home side were indeed the first to register a score through Ryan McHugh on the fourth minute after a Tullamore infringement. Longford 3 Tullamore 0

The next few minutes saw an exchange of kicks keeping play between the 22s. Longford thought they had a break through with a good carry from Henry Bryce only for his run to be halted and Tullamore awarded a penalty to bring play close to the Longford line. Under pressure, Longford pulled together and defended well, forcing a knock on from Tullamore giving the home side a chance to clear their lines. The game was littered with handling errors and perhaps did not have the characteristic bite of a first round cup tie.

And it was from one of the knock on scrums that the visitors made their mark on the score board running in the first try of the game with 25 minutes played. The try, unconverted left the score 3 to 5 and that’s how it remained to the half time whistle.

Longford were immediately under pressure from the second half kick off. Tullamore made the most of the ensuing penalty and broke through the home defence with only 4 mins on the second half clock gone. Longford 3 Tullamore 10.

Longford made some good carries but sharpness of the Longford passing was not up to its usual standard.

With 15 mins gone in the second half, the home side were reduced to 14 for a collection of penalties. The visitors chose to kick for the posts. Longford 3 Tullamore 13.

Longford tried with some gusto to get some go forward ball but were unable to breach the Tullamore defence. Tullamore were quick to the rucks and were awarded a penalty after Longford held on to the ball too long. The quick tap and go saw the visitors make a great break to near half way and cause Longford to scramble a defence and after holding onto the ball the home side were awarded a penalty and could reorganise themselves. The penalty kick brought the play back to the Tullamore line. The home side could not make the most of the lineout and with the ball knocked on Tullamore cleared the lines again.

But there was fight in the home side yet. From a Tullamore knock on the ball reached Colm Glynn. A good pass from Glynn saw Ryan McHugh make some yards and move the ball wide to the supporting Diarmuid Masterson who, with a little work left to do, managed to touch down in the corner on the 25thminute. The near touchline conversion was made by Ryan Mc Hugh. Longford 10 Tullamore 13.

This seemed to put some fire in the home-side but were left frustrated again when their hard work was undone by another knock-on.

Longford pushed on again with good carries from Daniel McHugh, Tom Gilheny and Liam Brady but again Longford were deemed to hold on too long and the visitors cleared the lines again from the penalty kick.

Their lineout was well taken and a kick through from the back of their ruck wasn’t dealt with and in the visitors ran for what was to be the last score of the game. Longford 10 Tullamore 18.

Longford will come away from the game frustrated that they could not convert some of the possession they had to scores but they will have to learn from today’s game and move on to preparing for the next round of the Leinster League next week when they welcome Tullow to CPL Park on Sunday next.

Portlaoise 29 – Longford U17 40

Longford Under 17’s made the journey last Wednesday to face Portlaoise in their first competitive match under lights. Portlaoise were after taking a losing bonus point against table toppers Athy the previous week, so it was not going to be an easy task after the 2hr journey to the O’Moore county.

Longford took to the pitch the most passionate and focused as we have seen them this year. They controlled play for the initial 9 minutes, but a quick break by Portlaoise out from their own half, led to a try, which was converted. The Longford men did not flinch and stuck to their game plan. It was end to end with some free flowing rugby by both teams. On the 31st minute, after some hard rucking, Stephen Oates picked the ball from the resulting scrum on the 22 to score. This was duly converted by Conor Mulligan. Portlaosie immediately put on the pressure again were rewarded with a penalty under the posts and after they slotted it over to leave the score 10-7 to the Laois side at half time.

With some inspiring words by coach Ronan during the break, the lads immediately held possession and were camped in the Portlaoise 22.  Ciaran Heffernan ran for the line and was taken down illegally, for the ref to award a penalty try, putting Longford in front for the first time. A few minutes later after a great burst up the middle of the pitch by Stephen and Diarmuid Glennon, protecting the ball, Alex Forde got the ball and scored. With Conor’s conversion, it extended the score to 21-10. With some great kicking by out half Rian Browne, Longford kept the Portlaoise lads back in their own half and eventually got a lineout from a resulting penalty in the 5mtr line. John Sheridan caught a brilliant ball in the lineout brought it down and fed it back to Stephen, and with the forwards driving the maul, Stephen scored. At this stage Longford were well in control and again after Longford drove form the line in a rolling maul, Ciaran Heffernan when over in the corner. Conor was very unlucky with the conversion as it struck the black spot on the crossbar. At this stage, Cathal Ghee had to come off after taking a knock and Jarad Weaffer came on to replace him.

Portlaoise took the drop off after Ciranan’s try, however the ball did not got the required 10mtrs so a scrum was awarded. No. 8, Stephen, picked the ball from the base of the scrum, the opposition flankers were slow to react, and he burst through the defensive line to run in under the posts. Longford were now 30 points in the lead and the Longford legs were getting tired in the last 15 minutes. Portloaise to their credit did not give up and ran in 3 tries in this last period to show that a game is never over to the final whistle. Thankfully, Longford had done all the damage in the first 55 minutes, to leave the final score 40-29 to the Men in Black.

All of the lads played their hearts out and the work being done by Ronan, Danny and Michael on the training ground is paying off in results on the field. All the forwards stuck to the game plan, kept to their arrows, listened to the calls and kept driving forward in attack and their line speed was fast in defence. Sean Mohahan did some huge work carrying the ball into contact and driving the opposition back in defence, Oran Lyons tackled like a demon this weekend and our “giants of men”, Jack and James, intimidated the opposition with their controlled aggressive play. The backs tackled brilliantly and showed some great support play in attack. Chris was unlucky in the wings and ripped a brilliant ball from the arms of the Portlaoise winger. Diarmuid Rawle showed great knowledge of the game in some good rucking, while Caelum at full back (before he had a spell in the forwards) read the game well and was in the right place to catch ball when kicked and tactically knew when to come into attack the be the extra man and provide an overlap.

Preventing Portlaoise from a losing bonus point, virtually assures Longford of a place in the Leinster League Final on the 25th March. The cup is up next with an away game against Edenderry on the 18th. We require everyone in at training on Thursday night especially, so we can reinforce some of the moves we are working on and continue this winning form.

U16 Girls Dundalk 14 Longford 50

Longford U16 Girls travelled to Dundalk Sunday 12th in the Leinster League.  The Longford Girls were under pressure with a squad shy of the full 15 players.

Mia Rowan opened the scoring bonanza with a signature solo run from inside the Longford Half following on with a carbon copy try in between the posts, converted by Captain Isabella Larkin. Longford were up by 19-0 at Halftime.

The game was restarted when Dundalk scored an early try and started putting pressure on the visitors.  Longford Girls absorbed a brief surge by Dundalk and got down to business of scoring tries once more. Amber McGrath was incredibly strong breaking through numerous tackle attempts with well executed hand offs, giving her a tally of 2 tries. Isabella Larkin broke free and scored 2 tries in the second half, both of which she converted. Amber McGrath kicked a ball from with the Longford half which Maria Ricon chased and beat a number of tackles to score between the posts once more.

Special Mention to Ava O Loughlin who put massive pressure on the home side causing numerous knock ons and her twin sister Rachel who was solid on the wing carrying ball forward and being instrumental in 2 tries.

Longford Girls welcome new player Casey Foran who displayed confidence in her carries and skill in her offloads.

Migle Frolovaite was nothing short of a tackling machine!

Longford barely put a foot wrong throughout.

International Comment

Round 2 of the Six Nations saw the French roll into town at the weekend to tee up a fascinating encounter at the Aviva Stadium.  The most unusual prematch statistic of all was the world ranking of both teams, pitting World numbers 1 and 2 ranked teams against each other.  The hype on the game was matched by the performance of both sides from the off as they went on the attack. France, in the warm-up, focused on penalties and drop goals, perhaps signalled what was to follow.  Where France took the first penalty opportunity, Ireland struck with a try. France hit back with a try from deep in their own half to retake the lead and tagged on a couple of more penalties. Ireland struck with a fantastic try from James Lowe. The size of the French pack took its toll later in the game as Ireland pressed home their advantage in fitness and mobility and Garry Ringrose took a fabulous pass from Caelan Doris to hammer home the win with minutes to go.  The atmosphere at the game was fitting for the occasion and the French support certainly made their presence felt while the home support were equally enthusiastic.  Ireland have a welcome break next week ahead of the away trip to Rome which should tee up a Grand Slam finish to the tournament in March.

Provincial Towns Cup Preview, Youths/Minis Match reports…

By Padraig Murphy Longford RFC PRO Ph: 087 6063587 Email:  lrfconnects@gmail.com

2023 Bank of Ireland Provincial Towns Cup First Round

The 2023 Provincial Towns Cup kicks off on Sunday next, 12th February. Longford are preparing for their first round tie this weekend, drawn home advantage against Tullamore. The draw for this year’s competition was made ahead of the Leinster v Racing 92 European fixture in the Aviva recently. The final will take place on Sunday 26th April, with the venue still to be confirmed.

Twenty-five teams will take part in this year’s Towns Cup competition, with seven teams awarded byes to the second round. These seven teams are Gorey RFC, Kilkenny RFC , Boyne RFC , Ashbourne RFC, Wicklow RFC, Naas RFC & Enniscorthy RFC. ‌

While this season’s league has been a tough campaign for Longford, the team will go into the Towns Cup fixture in somewhat buoyant mood, following recent performances where they overcame both Mullingar and Cill Dara in addition to a couple of well-earned bonus point loses against league leaders Wicklow and chasers, Carlow.

Longford know that they will need to produce an all-round game to see off Tullamore. The Towns Cup is always a very exciting event and one that Longford have faired well in recently, reaching a final and semi-final in the last decade.

Longford’s Director of Rugby, Colm Glynn comments, ‘we are really looking forward to upcoming towns cup fixture next Sunday at home v Tullamore 2nds.  Since start of December we’ve started to find a bit of form as a group and have won 3 of our last 5 league games while our 2 losses have come away from home and have garnered 2 losing bonus points. We played Tullamore earlier in the season in midland league and only win with last kick of the game so we know how tough a challenge they will be. However, with home advantage and hopefully some of our injured players back available for selection we are confident of being able to get a result and progress to the next round. The towns cup is a really special competition and something we will be giving our full attention to this year’

Please come in and support in Longford at CPL Park on Sunday at 3.00pm. Your support would be very appreciated.

U16 Boys Longford 25-14 Portarlington

Longford U16 team after the win over Portarlington.  Back Row L-R Ryan Spollen, Danny Kelly, Jonathan Groenewald, Dan Donohue, Tadgh McCauley, Senan Murphy, Joseph Davidson, Daniel Corr, Derek Belton, James Cosgrove, Harry Byrne, Jamie Donohue, Shane McGuigan.  Front roe L-R; Conor O’Grady, Mel Mulligan, Darragh Walsh, Tom Murray, Niall Connaughton, Donnacha Golden, Jack Brogan.

Longford welcomed Portarlington to CPL Park in the Leinster League on Saturday last. Having shown glimpses of excellent play in recent losses a strong performance and victory were both badly needed, and the home team didn’t disappoint. Longford played flawless rugby at high tempo in the opening 10 minutes and were rewarded by a fine try by No. 8 Shane McGuigan following sustained pressure.  Senan Murphy added the conversion.

On resumption, Longford again took the game to their opponents with good continuity play leading to an excellent team try ably finished by winger Jack Brogan. The conversion was again added by Murphy who then added a brace of penalty kicks, and Longford had good control of the game at this point.  The Portarlington side have experienced a good run of form of late and continued to probe in attack but were well repelled by the ever-present Daniel Corr, Ryan Spollen and Danny Kelly in the Longford pack.  A strong period of Longford dominance was rewarded following a perfectly executed play, directly off the training field, which saw Jonathan Groenwald split the Portarlington defence making a deep attack onto the Portarlington half.  A quick ruck fed ball out to full-back  Darragh Walsh, who beat two opponents to score beneath the posts. Longford reached the break 25 -0 ahead but, having to play into a strong breeze in the second half, knew this game was far from over. Portarlington were a big and strong team and, with the wind advantage, brought a much-improved performance in the second half. Two converted tries followed for them, and Longford were forced to defend for prolonged periods.

Mel Mulligan played a very effective game at scrum half while Jamie Donohue and Tom Murray held firm in the midfield.  Conor O Grady continuously harried the opposition lineout throughout the game and secured alot of ball for his team. Longford deserved their win and showed some great phases of team play throughout. The remaining games of the Leinster League are eagerly awaited if Longford can replicate this performance.

Longford: 1 Ryan Spollen, 2 James Cosgrove, 3 Joseph Davidson, 4 Conor O’Grady, 5 Danny Kelly, 6 Daniel Corr,7 Derek Belton, 8 Shane MgGuigan, 9 Mel Mulligan, 10 Senan Murphy, 11 Jonathan Groenewald, 12 Tom Murray, 13 Jamie Donohue, 14 Jack Brogan, 15 Darragh Walsh, 16 Tadgh McCauley, 17 Donnacha Golden, 18. Harry Byrne, 19 Niall Connaghton

Next match is a Leinster league home game versus Clondalkin in 2 weeks.

U14 Boys Longford 24-14 Rathdrum

A great team performance from Longford RFC U-14s yielded a good win against Rathdrum, despite inclement weather, the team won a hard-fought match against a well organised organised Rathdrum defence. Great breaks from several players yielded good yards throughout the match allowing Longford RFC deserved win game. A team performance showing signs of unity and improving in all aspects of the game.

Try Scorers: Jay, Brayden Francis, Sam Elliott and Brody. 2 conversions – Adam Cranogue.

Mini Rugby

Longford’s Eimhin Kelly eyes up the try line at the minis blitz.

Longford U12’s played host to Mullingar and Tullamore in this weekends midlands blitz.  Some cracking rugby was on display this weekend.

With the start of the 6 Nations to the forefront of everyone’s minds and the presence of assistant head coach, Pauline Marlowe, on the sideline for the first time in a while, the competitive spirit in the boys was evident.

Our U9’s & U10’s were on the road again this weekend at a midlands blitz in Tullamore.   The spirits were equally high, and we even had a rendition of Irelands Call!

From the looks of the jerseys, a fantastic morning’s rugby was had by all, but God help the laundrette!!!

The U6 – U11 teams have been invited to Dubarry Park in Athlone next Sunday to play Buccaneers RFC

International Comment

The provincial sides come together as Ireland kicked off the Six Nations in Cardiff.  Ireland lived up to their rankings as one of the tournament favourites in a demolition job in the first half to win 34-10.  However, there is lots to work on in terms of improvement as the second half saw the hosts create plenty opportunities only to lack the clinical finishing required to add to the scoreboard.  France roll into town next Saturday for the eagerly awaited clash of the pre tournaments joint favourites who are also number 1 and 2 in world rankings.

Boot room

Parents – Why not check out the hugely popular Boot room here at Longford rugby club where we have a self replenishing stock of replacement boots.  You drop in a pair you no longer need and replace it with a pair that fits your child.

Longford RFC Notes 30/01/2023

Derick Turner inducted into Hall of Fame, Men lose to Carlow, Ladies lose to Wicklow, Mini/Youth News…

By Padraig Murphy Longford RFC PRO Ph: 087 6063587 Email:  lrfconnects@gmail.com

Derick Turner – Leinster Rugby Sean O’Brien Hall of Fame Award Winner 2023.

It was a special occasion at Bective RFC where Leinster Rugby held the Sean O’Brien Awards and the winner was none other than Longford Rugby stalwart, Derick Turner.

Derick’s love and passion for the game of rugby was honed during his school days in

Wilsons Hospital. In an unusual twist, Derick captained Wilsons Hospital to a Connacht Schools Cup and also played with the Connacht schools’ team.

On leaving school and wanting to continue to play the game he loved, he joined Mullingar. At that time Longford had no club and Mullingar was the natural home for those from the county that wanted to play the game.  Derick’s first involvement in the Towns Cub was as a seventeen-year-old, playing for Mullingar against Wexford.  In the mid 60’s, Derick, along with a group of like-minded people, felt it was time that Longford once again had their own Club.  There was a history of rugby being played in the county from the late 1800’s through to the war years, but it would be 1967 before Longford RFC once again took to the field.

Derick Turner receives his Hall of Fame Award from President of Leinster Rugby, Debbie Carthy

Having had such a close association with Mullingar, it seemed natural that the first outing for the fledgling Longford Club would be against their near neighbours, and, as it transpired, it was to be a narrow win for the new Club, with none other than Derick Turner scoring one of two tries for Longford.

In those early years the Club played on a field borrowed from a local farmer and players changed at the back of the Annaly Hotel where a cold shower and barrel of

cold water were the only facilities enjoyed by the players. Longford RFC have come a long way and the facilities now enjoyed by members include two prunty pitches a new floodlit state of the art 4G pitch, comfortable clubhouse with restaurant facilities, gym, separate changing rooms for women’s rugby and a dedicated youth facilitv.  While Derick would be the first to acknowledge the great work done by so many people in the Club over the years, there is no doubt that he has driven the development of the Club both on and off the pitch for over 55 years.

Club members at the Sean O’Brien Hall of Fame Awards, L-R, Tom Cox, Paul Treuick, Pat Quinn, Tony Headon, Peter Quinn, Derick Turner, Club President Donagh McDonnell, Gerry Carthy, Eddie Farrell, PRO Padraig Murphy.

Derick instigated the introduction of the youths and minis section of the Club back in the early seventies.  He was also ahead of his time where women’s rugby was concerned, in getting a team together in Longford in the mid-seventies, only to see it fall by the wayside as it proved impossible to get any matches for the team.

His dedication to both Longford and Leinster Rugby has seen him serve as Club Captain, 1st Team Coach and Club President.  He represented Longford on the Leinster Midlands Committee and sat as one of their representatives on the Leinster junior committee for many years. During his time on the Leinster Junior committee, he sat on the Competitions Committee, while he also spent a period of three years as manager of the Leinster Junior side, during which time they secured an interprovincial title.

While a lot of people have come and gone since 1967, Derick Turner remains

the one constant driving force at the club, be it driving development, encouraging, and mentoring players, fundraising, marking pitches, or whatever else is required. While he has stepped down from his Leinster roles, Derick shows no sign of letting up any time soon.  He remains on the club executive and leads the sponsorship and development

committees.

The Clubs presence at the heart of the community is due to Derick’s great work

and foresight.  After more than half a century of service to the development and

administration of rugby both at Club and Provincial level, Derick Turner is a

fitting recipient of the prestigious Leinster Rugby, Sean O’Brien Hall of Fame award.

Men’s XV News

Despite a spirited second half, Longford came up short against Carlow at Oak Park on Sunday.  In a further twist, despite taking a losing bonus point, the away results for both teams just above Longford mean that we remain bottom of the table, without closing the gap.  Longford’s 3 remaining league fixtures, 2 of which are at home, are all the more critical to our survival in Division 1B.

Longford secure losing bonus point in frustrating away loss to Carlow RFC

By Mark Quinn at Oak Park, Carlow

29/01/2023 Carlow RFC 19 Longford RFC 12

During the long drive back from Carlow late on Sunday evening, a range of contradicting words swirled through my head in trying to sum up the day’s events. Frantic, composed, careless, ruthless, naïve, smart, fearful and brave were just a few. All were in the mix on a day when Longford went from flattering to deceive to illustrating in bursts the very form that has seen this side grow in confidence and make a comeback in terms of League points over recent matches. Ultimately it wasn’t to be on a day when very little if anything went this team’s way.

Context is however important before we get into any match detail. Going into gameday, the team were already without 3 kingpins of the usual starting XV with the influential Benny McManus, Kieran O’Gorman and Finnbarr McGowan all missing from the team sheet due to injury or unavailability. This was however further compounded on the day itself with the late withdrawals of Liam Brady & George McDermott – 2 more key players who have been in rich form over recent weeks. Traveling to Carlow is a tough away day at the best of times but without 5 of last week’s starting team that so impressively beat Mullingar meant that this was going to be an even harder challenge to overcome. This is a squad effort though and in stepped able deputies to take their chances.

Carlow kicked off into Longford’s half with a slight breeze in their favour. Their chase was aggressive and immediately put the Longford receivers under pressure deep in the Longford 22. Longford scrambled to get a set and just did so despite the aggressive opening Carlow attack. The ball was spun back to Ryan McHugh behind his own touchline who needed to clear for touch. The towering Carlow No.4 had other ideas however and he launched himself high into the path of the clearance kick and got a full block on the ball. As it spun to the ground it was roulette where it went next but perhaps as an early signal to Longford of how this day was going to go it sat up neatly for the Carlow blocker to touch it down for an opening try which was converted. One minute down, 7-0 down.

That can happen in the opening play of any sport – and when it does you write it off and immediately go again. It was a freak start that the team needed to put behind them. This they did and for the next 10 minutes Longford locked horns and competed hard with what was a very high-quality Carlow team. Matters weren’t helped however during this period when Colm Glynn, Longford’s most experienced leader, was forced off due to an injury. Player/Coach Henry Bryce entered the fray for what was going to have to be a longer cameo than was planned.

Carlow were starting to really click into gear now and were launching phase after phase of multi angle running lines that had Longford stretched to cover. On the 17th minute one of these phases delivered Carlow’s second try, however the conversion was missed. Score 12-0 as we approached the end of the first quarter. Longford needed a reaction and importantly started to gain a foothold in the game. Alistair McCormack had a fine first half both in the loose and out of touch as Longford’s main lineout threat. He was ably assisted by Tom Gilheany, Packie Molloy and Mark McHugh who fought tenaciously at every breakdown. However, despite this it was at this juncture that self-inflicted errors began to creep in through the team with an escalating number of lineouts lost and penalty kicks for touch falling short. Longford were wasting hard fought momentum opportunities and giving Carlow soft escapes.

Longford did however execute a superb phase of play on 26 minutes that caught Carlow unawares. From a lineout Longford launched a textbook driving maul just inside the Carlow half and rumbled forward for 15 metres at a pace Carlow couldn’t deal with. The referee finally raised his hand to signal a rare penalty to the visitors due to Carlow collapsing. Longford kicked to the corner, lost the ensuing lineout and Carlow cleared to halfway. If ever a 2-minute phase reflected how things were going so far this was it – pure frustration. Carlow launched another incisive attack on 32 minutes that Longford did very well to get back and defend, forcing their flying winger into touch with only a metre to spare. Longford secured the resulting lineout, drove the maul again for 15 metres out of trouble and received another penalty for Carlow collapsing. This time the lines were cleared to relieve the pressure. However, Carlow weren’t for easing and on 36 minutes countered a Longford missed touch to devastating effect. They rumbled over as the half time whistle approached for a converted try. Score 19-0 at the break.

Longford shuffled the backline at halftime with Diarmuid Masterson introduced and several positional changes made. The second half started with more self-inflicted hardship however as Alistair McCormack was shown a straight yellow card for an infringement at the breakdown on 42 minutes. To add injury to insult, the unfortunate John Geelan took a heavy knock on 44 minutes that seen one of Longford’s toughest competitors this season forced to retire. Longford really had to dig in now and somehow stem the flow of an increasingly confident Carlow side. To their credit, Longford hung in with big defensive displays on show from every man on the field. Up front Podge Farrell at Loose Head Prop took no step back and put in a huge effort both in scrum and open play. However, it was Seamus McKeown at Tight Head who perhaps went even a step further with a colossal, player of the match performance that showed just why he is so highly thought of by those involved at Longford Rugby Club. He was ferocious throughout – fearless in contact, relentless in the tackle and ruck – and as solid as the foundations of Cairn Hill in the scrum. He has a huge future in the game.

Ryan McHugh gets ready to launch an attack from a Longford scrum

Longford needed to get something going now, and on 60 minutes Henry Bryce made a trademark break from his 22 and reached the halfway line with a typically aggressive carry. The ball was spun quickly wide to Danny McHugh, restored to his favoured Outhalf position, who launched a superb second wave swiftly through the backs. Joe McGowan took the ball on the line at full tilt and made a remarkable run – evading several tacklers and making serious yardage. Just as it looked like he was caught he slipped the final defender and the road to the try line was somehow still open. He made it for one of the standout tries of the season and Ryan McHugh slotted a beauty of a conversion from the touchline. Score 19-7.

Longford had found their groove and were now the dominant force as a shaken Carlow visibly wilted. Longford launched wave after wave of attack and were unlucky to be held up at the Carlow line on several occasions. On 66 minutes Longford were awarded a penalty from which another driving maul was launched at the Carlow line. Henry Bryce took matters into his own hands and crashed over for a hard-earned team try. The difficult conversion was however missed. Score 19-12 with 14 minutes to go.

Packie Molloy rises highest to secure possession against Carlow

Longford gave everything for the remainder of the game and gallantly stood up to what were a very well drilled Carlow side. Despite some excellent phases of play from Longford in the closing stages, the Carlow fortifications proved impenetrable and they held out for the win – albeit with the fright of their lives as Longford made them sweat right to the final whistle.

So, a disappointing loss but a losing bonus point was secured against a very tough hand of cards dealt to the team on the day. This could yet prove crucial as the final 3 games of the Leinster League approach. With a full complement of players back and a well-earned rest after 3 successive physical weekends of rugby, this team has still plenty to believe in. There are 15 points still on the table. Some luck, better discipline, ruthless execution and cool heads will be the deciding factors in what happens next.

Youth Match reports

U17 Midland Warriors 00 – 38 Longford

The Longford U17’s made the trip to Midland Warriors for the reverse fixture of this 2nd Phase of the Leinster League campaign. Playing with the bare 15 young men, it meant that some lads had to adapt to some positional changes, Oran Lyons stepping in as hooker from his recent outings on the wing, Alex Forde filled the scrum half’s boots while Olan Bracken was in the 2nd centre role.

It was a lovely dry day with no wind, a prefect day for a game in the grass pitch. The main focus today was to try to concentrate on our structure, communication and working our arrows. The game started as it was to continue with Jamie Dorr going in for the 1st try in the 5th minute and it was converted by Rian Browne. With the forwards taking control for the next few minutes, Oran Lyons went over for a converted try in the 9th minute. Forward dominance was maintained, and Jack O’Hara went over in the 20th minute. There was a purple patch of play for the Midlands lads and the Longford defence was stretched but held out. On the 35thmin it was a chance for winger Caelum Mc Gee to put his name on the scoresheet when he scored in the corner. This left the score 0-24 to the visitors at half time.

After we came out for the second half, we had identified some areas that we needed to work on. Through the working of our arrows James Grehan went over in the 10th minute of the second half, and Rian slotted over again. Despite the scoresheet, the next phase of play was a little scrappy, with penalties being awarded for hands in the ruck, high tackles and not rolling away. In the 25th minute of this half, despite Rian’s call for the ball to go to the backs, James saw a gap in the Warriors defence and scored under the posts. With Rian converting it left the score 38-0 to the Longford men.

We were unlucky not to have scored more, Diarmuid Rawlewas denied twice, once for touching the touchline as he went in and the second, as he touched down after crossing the whitewash, only to get up to realise it was the 5mtr line and not the try line. Yaw Appiah gave us a masterclass on jackling, John Sheridan jumped well in the lineout stealing a few, Cathal Ghee & Sean Molihan carrying the ball well into contact and Cian Gavin making a great tackle on one if the oppositions biggest player. Diarmuid Glennon tackled like a demon despite one of the oppositions wanting to change his hair style.

Plenty of work to do on the training ground next week, as we will need to improve against stronger opposition next week down in Athy. Thanks to Midlands Warriors for their hospitality and to Conor our water (and tee) boy for the day.

Longford: Yaw Appiah, Oran Lyons, Cathal Ghee, Jack O’Hara, Sean Mohihan, Cian Gavin, John Sheridan, James Grehan, Alex Forde, Rian Browne, Diarmuid Glennon, Olan Bracken, Caelum Mc Gee, Diarmuid Rawle, Jamie Dorr.

U16 Boys Longford 05-27 Mullingar

Longford U16s welcomed Mullingar to CPL Park on Saturday last in the Midland League. Following a win against Ravens in the last round, Longford were anxious needed another victory to keep alive the hope of a final appearance. Longford started very well in the first quarter and brought the game to their opponents with some great continuity play, led ably by Joseph Davidson and Ryan Spollen with rapid distribution by Mel Mulligan. Mullingar’s defence creeked but never broke and, against the run of play, their out-half hacked a ball through from his own half of the pitch which was followed up on by their pacy centre to score. Longford responded quickly and attacked again into the Mullingar half. A line out close to the Mullingar line yielded a well taken try by Daniel Corr in a well worked move. Mullingar attacked the Longford line shortly afterwards and notably try saving tackles by Jamie Donohue and Ryan Spollen broke the siege. A try for Mullingar followed shortly afterwards on 20 minutes following a penalty 10 metres from the line. On resumption, Longford again attacked deep into the Mullingar half and a driving maul followed by good forward probing by Conor O Grady and Danny Kelly led to a Ryan Spollen dive for the line. The ref adjudged that the ball had spilled forward, and Mullingar managed to clear their lines. On the stroke of half time Mullingar scored in  the corner  and Longford could feel aggrieved to find themselves 10 points behind having had the lion’s share of possession and territory in the first half. The second half began well for Longford but slow support for the ball carrier proved their undoing and good possession was coughed up to the opposition on a number of occasions. Two tries in quick succession followed for Mullingar. Darragh Walsh and Senan Murphy led some probing runs for Longford in the closing quarter. The final result of 27-5 didn’t reflect some good Longford play. Longford have alot of positives to take form their performance.

Longford: 1 Ryan Spollen, 2 James Cosgrove, 3 Joseph Davidson, 4 Conor O’Grady, 5 Danny Kelly, 6 Harry Byrne, 7 Derek Belton, 8 Daniel Corr, 9 Mel Mulligan, 10 Donnacha Golden, 11 Jonathan Groenewald, 12 Senan Murphy, 13 Jamie Donohue, 14 Jack Brogan, 15 Darragh Walsh, 16 Tadhg McCauley, 17 Gift Obrerhor, 18 Corey Harrington.

Next match is a Leinster league home game versus Portarlington this weekend.

U16G Ravens 12-26 Longford

Mia Rowan opened the scoreline which was converted by Isabella Larkin. The visitors scored again with Mia showing some strong running after a few phases involving the forwards up the middle of the pitch.  A well worked penalty move resulted in Shauna Hannon blasting over for Longfords 3rd try, converted by their Captain.

Longford led at half time 19-5

The game was a bit stop/start in the 2nd half with Longford losing 2 players to the Bin.

Longford withheld and  some excellent support running from Ava Horkan and Olivia Hadzislawus ended with Longford getting the last try ran in by Amber McGrath, again converted by Isabella Larkin.

Longfords defence was almost impenetrable…special performances by Andrea Nolan, Anna O Connor Niamh Brady, and Maria Rincon in defence.

Overall, one of the most comprehensive team performances the girls have had so far.

Final score: Ravens 12 Longford 26

Scores: Tries- Mia Rowan (2), Shauna Hannon(1), Amber McGrath (1).

Isabella Larkin- Conversions (3)

Longford: Rachel O Loughlin,  Isabella Larkin (C) Niamh Brady, Andrea Nolan, Olivia Hadzislawus, Amber McGrath, Lucy O Connor, Ava Horkan, Mia Rowan, Ava O Loughlin, Aoife MvVeigh, Anna o Connor, Maria Ricon, Jasmine Duignan, Shauna Hannon

U15

The U15 team attended this season’s Midlands squad initial screening session at Mullingar rugby club on Sunday. Over 3 blitz games the team had the opportunity to showcase their skills and hopefully impress enough to be selected for the next session at mid-term.

Schools Rugby

St. Mels College junior team took on neighbouring rugby school, Wilsons Hospital at the club on Wednesday last.  The St. Mel’s team has a host of players who play with the club together with some very talented newcomers.  Mel’s juniors have had good results on field this season with their only defeat in the cup competition against a good Drogheda side before the Christmas.

Wilsons also boast a number of club players from both Longford and Mullingar Rugby clubs and coupled with the more intensive and regular weekly training sessions, one might have thought there would be a mismatch on the field.  That couldn’t be further from the truth as what followed was one of the most entertaining games between two evenly matched sides.  The game ebbed and flowed with both sides swapping the lead on a number of occasions.

St. Mel’s struck first with a try from fullback, Darragh Walsh, converted by Senan Murphy.  Wilsons replied with one try before out-half, Senan, struck to score the second St. Mels try and again added the conversion.  Wilsons then added two more tries to take the lead but managed to convert just one of them.  From there, Mel’s piled on the pressure with two further tries, both scored by flanker, Maxime Gerner, also converted by Senan Murphy.  Wilsons scored the last try but with just one successful kick off the tee the St. Mels side held on to win the game.

There were some great performances across the team, Michael Gacquin at scrum-half, Danny Kelly at No8, Mikey Glennon in the centre, Darragh Walsh and Maxime Gerner at wing-forward and Senan Murphy pulling strings at out-half.  St. Mel’s will play one further league game before the playoffs and are on target to reach the Leinster final.

Men’s XV news

In an enthralling home derby encounter on Sunday, Longford overcame a stiff challenge from neighbours Mullingar RFC, to earn a bonus point win, avenging the away loss earlier in the season.  On that occasion Longford took a strong lead into the break only for indiscipline to allow Mullingar back into the game.  This time, no quarter was given by either side in the first half, while indiscipline cost both sides in the second half with the visitors down to 12 men at one point.  Longford inflicted punishment on the score board to earn the 4 try bonus point win, following up on the seconds side who also had a big win over the neighbours in the earlier game.

Sunday next Carlow host Longford at Oak Park.  If Longford can maintain momentum and both Cill Dara and Dundalk slip up in their tricky away fixtures to Wicklow and Dundalk respectively, the fight for survival in Div1B gets really intriguing with 3 rounds remaining.

Longford take the spoils in emphatic bonus point win over Mullingar in the League Derby

19/03/2023 Leinster League Division 1N Longford 29 Mullingar 20

By Mark Quinn at Longford Rugby Club

Those in attendance were treated to a pulsating encounter at Longford Rugby Club on Sunday past. This was the big one. For some time, the local derby had been on the horizon as a potentially pivotal fixture in Longford’s frustrating league season to date. A win was simply non-negotiable if Longford’s recent resurgence in form was to continue to gather pace and the league comeback was to continue. A mixture of understandable nerves and quiet confidence was in the air as the home team took the field to lock horns with the old enemy. The scene was set, the talking over – it was time to put everything on the line and make recent progress count.

Longford got off to a great start and set the early tempo. After a high intensity start to the game, Longford were awarded a penalty on 4 minutes that was calmly slotted over by Ryan McHugh. An early 3-0 lead settled the nerves and for the next 10 minutes it was all Longford as they launched attack after attack. However, just as Longford should have been making their early dominance count, they were punished by the referee for what was deemed an intentional infringement by the in-form Alistair McCormack who was then yellow carded. Just as the momentum was building, the home team were then on the back foot and having to defend against a dynamic Mullingar team who intended making their advantage count.

This they did over the next phase of the game. A penalty was landed on 22 mins to balance the score board at 3-3. However, there was worse to come from the home side’s perspective after a comedy of errors in Longford’s backline allowed Mullingar in for a very cheap try under the Longford posts on 24 minutes which was converted to give Mullingar a 10-3 lead. This was the pivotal moment of the game – could Longford bounce back after giving so much momentum to the visitors. The answer was an emphatic yes. Longford for awarded a lineout on the stroke of half time close to the Mullingar line. After securing clean possession, a pre rehearsed wave of carries were launched by the Longford loose forwards. It was on the second wave of attacks that the ultimate Player of the Match, Tom Gilheany, crashed over for an outstanding try that was a deserved reward for the home sides first half efforts. The conversion was missed to leave the scoreboard 10-8 at halftime in the visitors’ favour.

As both the teams and those lucky enough to be in attendance gathered their breaths at halftime, no one knew that even more drama was set to explode in a second half that will live long in the memory. It did not start to plan for the home side as Mullingar landed the first blow on 44 minutes after a dominant scrum enabled their back row to capitalise and score a try on the back of a scrum advantage. The conversion was missed, but Mullingar had made the best possible start to the second half and swung the scoreboard 15-8 in their favour. What happened next however was a run of events that even the most experienced scribe would have struggled to keep up with.

On 47 minutes, both sides were simultaneously punished with yellow cards with Ryan McHugh the unlucky victim for the home side. Longford however pushed on and made an incisive break that was broken down illegally by the visitors who received another yellow card on 50 minutes. Longford all of a sudden had a 1-man advantage and went for the jugular. The hugely talented Cormac Casey at full back made a great break only to be halted by a dangerous high tackle which was punished by yet another yellow card against Mullingar. Longford now had a 2-man advantage and it was time to make it count. Longford secured a lineout from the ensuing penalty deep into the Mullingar half. A flawless lineout seen Kieran O’Gorman rise highest at the back which set a textbook driving maul at the Mullingar line. The ever-dependable Mark McHugh drove over for his second try in consecutive matches which was sweetly converted by Danny McHugh. Score 15-15.

Mullingar were rattled and the home side could smell blood. They needed to keep the pressure on and this they did via another try on 58 minutes when Player/Coach Henry Bryce took matters into his own hands and launched a typically aggressive solo effort that seen him break the attempts of 3 Mullingar tacklers. He touched down under the posts to give Danny McHugh a straightforward conversion which he took sweetly. Score was now 22-15 to Longford.

Longford were now dominating every aspect of the game and producing arguably some of their best rugby of the season with wave after wave of excellent running rugby. Up front Podge Farrell, Liam Brady and David Geelan were putting in huge shifts especially at the set piece. Packie Molloy added real dynamism after replacing the unfortunate Benny McManus who had to retire earlier in the game having himself put in his signature physical shift at the coal face. In the backs there were big displays from Finbarr McGowan, Danny McHugh and George McDermott who was in scintillating form throughout.

But it was Player of the Match, flanker Tom Gilheany who made the next impact. After a superb read on 70 minutes, he intercepted a Mullingar attack and at full tilt ran the length of the field. It looked for all in attendance that he had made it only to be caught at the very last metre under the Mullingar posts. There were 2 supporting backs on his shoulder who recycled the ball but were desperately unlucky to knock on over the Mullingar line. Longford were relentless and were in no mood to show mercy to their shell-shocked opponents. George McDermott made a superb break on 73 minutes and was also unlucky to be caught. However, Longford were aggressive in their support and recycled for the resurgent David Geelen to carry hard over the line to score Longford’s fourth, and bonus point try. Ryan McHugh landed the sweetest of conversions to swing matters 29-15 in favour of the Men in Black.

Indeed, Longford looked to have bagged yet another try on 75 minutes when Diarmuid Masterson made a great effort and seemed to have touched down in the corner. The referee initially agreed and raised his arm to signal the awarding of the try until an intervention by the linesman resulted in the score being cancelled. In fairness to Mullingar they never gave up and indeed scored the games closing try in the final play of the game which was not converted. The game ended 29-20 in favour of Longford – a huge result landed on the back of a huge performance by every player who took the field.

Next up Longford RFC travel to Carlow RFC next Sunday in what is always a tough fixture. However, this side have nothing to fear given their recent performances. Confidence is back, the systems are really starting to take shape and the talent is evident for all to see. Together, they have everything to play for.

Youth Match reports

U16 Boys Clondalkin 10-05 Longford

On a very soggy surface both sides slogged it out for 25 mins before Clondalkin broke the resolute Longford defence for the first try.  Conditions were that bad, that remaining on one’s feet was in itself a tricky task however the performance from Longford was exactly what we were missing in the last two fixtures.

The hosts tagged on a second try after the break  Converting was an impossible task also on the sponge like surface so both sides had to plug away in turns.

The outrageously high penalty count against the visitors was inexplicable .  Longford pressed for the line and Clondalkin conceded three successive penalties on the 5-metre line.  Players were warned for persistent penalties conceded but remained on the pitch where a card was warranted.  Two further offences were committed in the following phase however neither of these offences were sanctioned by the referee, but Longford fought bravely to hit back with a well-deserved score from Darragh Walsh.

Try as they might, Longford just couldn’t get over the line thereafter. On another day, this team performance had enough to win most matches. We will have to opportunity to play each of the last two teams again at home over the coming weeks to set the record straight on home ground.

Best for Longford in a rounded team performance was Ryan Spollen, Conor O’Grady, and George Burns.  Rahman Aro-Lambo was a menace on the wing, but we didn’t get enough ball out to him. Darragh Walsh, Tom Murray and Senan Murphy were excellent defensively on difficult conditions.

The team soon put the loss out of their minds as they headed on to the Aviva Stadium for Leinster’s final Champions Cup pool game against French side Racing 92.  Hopefully the bonus point performance resonates with the troop’s, and they repeat the commitment displayed in Clondalkin at our next game.

Longford Squad: Ryan Spollen James Cosgrove, Tadgh McCauley, Conor O’Grady, Danny Kelly, Harry Byrne, Jamie Donohue, Daniel Corr, Donnacha Golden, Senan Murphy, Tom Murray, Jack Brogan, George Burns, Rahman Aro-Lambo, Darragh Walsh, Dan Donohoe, Gift Orbrehor, Niall Connaughton.

U15 Boys Longford v Edenderry

Longford U15s hosted Edenderry on Saturday last at the club.

After 20 tense minutes, Longford had possession and drove through the middle giving them good field position just outside the visitors 20 metre line. More strong play set up Finbarr Thomas, who went over for the the first score of the game.

The battle between the two sides continued and Longford started to show a little more as the half progressed, leading to some good plays. The sustained pressure on the Edenderry 20 metre line saw Dylan Ledwith avoiding the defence and going over for the score. The conversion just missing but Longford stretched their lead to 12-0.

The visitors pushed for the Longford line with some good defensive work required by the Longford lads. However, the visitors continued to attack to go over in the corner for their first points. The conversion was missed at half time with Longford 12-5 ahead.

The second half started with both sides looking for the gaps for the first 15 minutes. Longford managed to raise their game and break the Edenderry defence with a couple of great runs from the forwards.  The resulting pressure was rewarded when Conor Clarke took the ball from the back of the ruck and rounded the Edenderry defence to go over for Longford’s third try, putting Longford in a deserved lead of 17-5.

The restart saw Edenderry come hard at the Longford defence which held up well. With 10 minutes to go the visitors crept closer to the Longford line but great defence kept them out. The visitors were pushing to the final whistle in an attempt to get a second score, but the Longford lads held them out coming out on top with a well deserved and hard-fought victory,

Final score:  Longford 17-05 Edenderry
