Annual Business Lunch

On Friday 3rd November the Club hosted our 2nd Annual Business lunch where attendees were treated to a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon’s fare which continued into the evening and, for the bravest, into the early hours of the following morning. Aah…..a reprise of the good old days! Writing in the Longford Leader Tommy Lyons stated:-

“Business people and rugby fans from across Longford converged on The Sin Bin at Longford Rugby Club last Friday to support a novel fundraising lunch.

The feature point of the afternoon was a discussion with two of the county’s most successful businesspersons and rugby tales “from inside the camp” from the legendary ‘Rala’ O’Reilly.

The annual business lunch took place last Friday (November 3) and was a replica of last year’s hugely successful inaugural event. The club presented an afternoon of quality business networking, industry leading speakers and top hospitality.

The welcome address was delivered by Karen Lennon, Vice President Longford RFC, and the event opening fell to Mike Magan, Chairperson Longford Rugby Club.

Mike spoke of the importance of the fundraiser for supporting grassroots rugby: “We do not do this alone. Many help us on this journey, you are part of this,” he said.

Benny O’Brien presided over a conversation with Michael Brewster and Padraic O’Kane. The men spoke of the importance of their Longford roots in the development of their careers and how the connection with the local community helped shape the directions they took in life.

Michael Brewster is a Managing Director at Stifel, an American multinational independent investment bank and financial services company. Michael runs the Brewster Financial Strategies Group.

A graduate from Institute of Technology Athlone Michael emigrated to America in 1989.

He is a Director of the Ireland US Council, and involved in many charitable endeavours associated with Sport and Education both in the USA and Ireland.

Michael gave a wonderful insight into his business resilience; from working for £2 an hour in the Annaly Hotel, to the set back of working at Lehman Brothers Inc when they filed for bankruptcy in 2008, to founding the Irish International Business Network in the USA.

Padraic O’Kane, a past student at St Mel’s College continues to be a stalwart member of LRFC. Padraic played for the Club with distinction and was capped for Leinster Youths.

Padraic’s revelation that his decision to seek pastures new was precipitated when “Turner put me on the fourths” drew much hilarity from the guests.

As CEO and founder of Corporate.ie, the Longford man presides over a portfolio of brands including FIRE Steakhouse & Bar, SOLE Seafood & Grill, The Round Room at the Mansion House and the Aer Lingus College Football Series.

Patrick ‘Rala’ O’Reilly gave an engaging insight to the inner workings of Irish rugby he has gleaned over two decades as kit man with the IRFU and the British and Irish Lions.

Club President Donagh McDonnell thanked the guests for their ongoing support: “We are proud of what we do but we can only do this with your help,” Donagh said.

Donagh said the money raised will develop facilities to afford young people access to sport: “Running a club like we have here is both a challenge and a joy. We achieved quite a lot and want to continue to grow and develop,” he concluded. ”

Back: Donagh McDonnell (LRFC President), guest speaker Michael Brewster, Karen Lennon (LRFC Vice-President), Pat Fitzgerald (Past President IRFU), guest speaker Padraic O’Kane and Mike Magan (LRFC Chair). Front: Ian Morgan, Joe Flaherty TD, guest speaker Patrick ‘Rala’ O’Reilly and Benny O’Brien (compere).

Our thanks to Tommy Lyons and the Longford Leader for permission to print this article in full and for the use of the picture.

The Club wishes to extend it’s appreciation and gratitude to all attendees, to Precision Health who were the event’s Main Sponsor, to Davis SuperValu who provided additional sponsorship, to our three Guest speakers who gave of their time, namely, Michael Brewster, Padraic O’Kane and Patrick “Rala O’Reilly, to our compere for the day, Benny O’Brien, to all who generously donated Auction Prizes (Padraic O’Kane, John Naughton, Pat Fitzgerald and Bank of Ireland) and to the volunteers within the Club who worked tirelessly to make the event an outstanding success. Finally, note the date in your diary,,,the first Friday in November 2024 for the 3rd iteration of the event.

Longford RFC Senior Awards 2023

Longford Rugby Clubs annual senior players awards took place on Friday evening. The awards were preceded by the annual Derek Belton XV v Derek Bannon XV game in memory of the club’s two playing members sadly no longer with us.

The games teams comprised of players from the U18 squad who recently won the Leinster plate, in addition to a wide age ranging number of current and former players. The game itself was very entertaining with a few golden oldies keen to remind us of their silky skills with ball in hand!

Tries were aplenty for both sides with youngsters Sam Davis, Brian O’Ferrell and Sergi Madden all impressing.

The awards presentation MC was club Vice President, Karen Lennon, who called on Danny McHugh to introduce the Leinster Plate winning U18 team who were each presented with their winning jerseys. Following that the Senior Ladies nominees stepped up for their awards.

U17 Leinster Plate Final Longford U17’s 7 – Mullingar 24

For the final game of the Longford U17’s 2022/23 season, Longford took on Mullingar in the Leinster Plate Final. It was a wet and slippery day in the North Kildare club grounds which would usually suit the Longford game.  In front of a large crowd of supportive parents, family, and friends, both teams went at it right from the start, with Longford playing downhill in the first half. Longford took to the task like ducks to water, keeping their defensive line and capitalising on the opposition mistakes. The game went from end to end with some great tackling and some good strategic kicking. We were dominant in the pack and needed to be, as there were sixteen lineout’s and eleven scrums in the first half. One of these lineout’s was a result of a brilliant tackle by Caelum McGee to drive the Mullingar winger into touch. Mullingar looked to spread the game out to the wings, where they believed they might do damage. In fact, it was Oran Lyons who made the first burst up the wing, out of his half and was just brought down inside their twenty-two. In another attack, Mullingar kicked the ball, Caelum caught it, he kicked and chased after it, a fumble by the collecting Mullingar winger, hacked on by Caelum into the five-metre line. However, Caelum was unable to gather the ball and it was knocked on. At half time it was still scoreless, in a typical cup game, with neither team wanting to concede.

In the half time talk by Ronan to the lads, he said that this game was going to be won by the team who made the least mistakes. As Mullingar had the benefit of the hill in the second half this put the young Longford men under pressure. Points were going to be precious in the game and Mullingar missed a penalty and a minute or so later tried for a drop goal. The men in black held out for a further 10 minutes, but one missed tackle on the wing let them in for the first try of the game. After the introduction of Cathal Byrne to the front row, Leinster U18’s panellist, Yaw Appiah moved out to the centre. The lads were still under relentless pressure and 20 minutes into this half after defending four rucks on the wing, the ball squirted out for Mullingar centre to go in under the posts. With Mullingar now twelve points in the lead, and Longford now chasing the game, the heads dropped somewhat.  In an effort to inject new energy Cian Gavin was introduced for the tiring Sean Molihan. The team’s overall focus wilted.  After a long season, and some having only a few hours’ sleep after their foreign travels, they found it hard to concentrate. Straight from the drop off the ball was gathered by the Mullingar centre who broke through three tacklers and, when Alex Forde down brought him, he had support runners to off load to and they ran under the posts again.

The constant defence was taking its toll on players with scrum half Conor Mulligan and then second row Jack O’Hara having to come off injured, being replaced by Cathal Ghee and Christopher Trautt.  After the drop off, the ball was kicked back and as Longford tried to break out from defence the ball was knocked on, gathered by a Mullingar player for them to run in at the corner. The game was now beyond Longford with 4 minutes left, but the lads did not give up and wanted to show our fellow midlanders that we have matured as a team since we last met 6 months ago in the league. After getting a penalty just inside the Mullingar half, Ciaran Heffernan picked and went, took the ball into contact and the ball was passed to James Grehan who carried twenty metres. After another few phases, Alex made a darting run up along the wing, offloading to Yaw, who took it into contact in the midfield, passed to James, who drove straight for the line, to be stopped inches short, then for Cathal Byrne to pick and drive over the line for the try. Out-half Rian Browne, kicked the conversion to a rousing cheer of the Longford supporters. This spurred the lads into life and there was now some great strong carries by Stephen Oates, Cathal Ghee, Ciaran, James, and Cathal Byrne to cross the gain line, and, with Diarmuid Glennon kicking into the Mullingar 22 being last play, Mullingar were delighted to kick the ball out and take the victory. Congratulations to our neighbours on winning the Leinster U17’s plate for this season.

The forwards did some great work, our jumpers in the lineout, Olan Bracken, and John Sheridan, secured our own ball and disrupted the opposition line out. We were also dominant in the scrum’s and drove the opposition back in every scrum with Sean and Jack in the engine room, giving us forward momentum. Our half backs, Conor & Rian, managed and controlled the game under exceedingly difficult conditions. Centres, Diarmuid Glennon and Alex, had a difficult day with the pacey opposition running at them all the time. Wingers, Oran Lyons and Diarmuid Rawle had the hard task of trying to mark their opposite numbers as Mullingar’s tactic was to spread the ball wide, but we kept them at bay for two thirds of this game. Caelum at full back had been best game of the season, putting in try saving tackles and the kicking from hand and, if he had the rub of the green, the ball would have bounced up for him to score a try in the first half. It was great to have strength on the bench in the two Cathals (forming their own comedy show, to compete with the two Johnnies), Cian and Chris, and to be able to spring them from the bench at vital times.

This season was a great journey for this bunch of young men. After a slow start we started to gain momentum in November and were in good shape, morale wise, coming into the Christmas. Ronan’s game plan was starting to work, and the results continued to show in the New Year, with only defeats to Athy (in the League Final), Edenderry in the cup (who were the ultimate winners of the Leinster Cup – congrats to them), to our final game against Mullingar in the final of the plate. The young men can now rest for the summer but can look forward to a next season playing as the Longford U18.5’s side, the senior youth’s team for the club. After this season’s U18.5’s having a brilliant win in the plate, also in North Kildare, we would hope that we will be able to emulate their success. Thanks to all the parents & supporters who travelled. But special thanks to Ronan, Danny, and Michael for their coaching this season and for Eamon, Jimmy & Kevin (we missed your photographic skills) helping in the organising of the team. Also, thanks to the parents who helped out in catering for the teams during the home games and for ferrying their men into training and matches during the season. Most importantly, thanks to the players for this year’s memories.

CHAMPIONS – U18’s take down Naas to win Leinster Plate

Longford Captain Eoin Murtagh lifts the Plate

In the final action of the season, it was a mixed bag of results for the last two teams standing for Longford Rugby Club.  The U18 side ended the season as Leinster Plate champions in a thrilling contest against a Naas side who had beaten Longford 30-05 earlier in the season.  Indeed, this result was all the sweeter, as Naas back then felt the need to turn the screw by keeping a full team on the pitch as Longford had lost players to injury, even though they had the result in the bag!  The saying ‘it’s a long road that has no turn’ was certainly apt motivation, in the build up to this final.  Longford set the tone and dictated the pace for the entire contest, withstanding the strong fight-back from the Naas side, who desperately tried to get themselves back into contention.  Longford were so determined to reverse the previous result, that their resolute defending was some of the best by any Longford youth team all season.  Special mention to mentors, Jimmy Murphy, Michael Bannon and Danny McHugh whom have worked extremely hard all season to keep this group together.

Earlier at the same venue, Longford’s U17 side took on Mullingar in the U17 decider and for a long period were right in the game.  The tide turned in the second half, as Mullingar got the first try.  Missed knock-ons in later phases allowed Mullingar to score their second try.  Longford fought back and got their own score mid-way through the second half, however the Mullingar side went on to win from there as their fitness was that bit better on the day.

U18 Leinster Plate Final

Longford RFC 23-12 Naas, Report by Micheal Bannon

Sam Davis carries for Longford U18s v Naas

Longford took on Naas team in the Leinster U18 Plate final in Kilcock on Saturday the 23rd of April.

Naas who had beaten a strong Tullow team in their semi-final were strong favourites coming into the game. Longford who were aiming for their third win of the season overcame Carlow in their semi-final after a heroic performance.

Conditions were poor with heavy rainfall before and during the match which favoured the bigger Longford pack. Longford drew first blood with Padraig Boyle slotting over a penalty to make it 3-0 after 5mins.

Naas capitalised on a poor Longford exit and played it through the hands to score in the corner with their kicker landing the touchline conversion.

Longford managed to work a few phases in their half before Padraig Boyle chipped through and regathered to get Longford deep into the Naas half.  Once Longford got into Naas’s red zone the forwards came to life and started to gain ground with a number of pick and goes and balls off scum half Sam O’Rourke.  Eventually Naas could no longer soak up the pressure and Ireland u18 international Sam Mills went over the line with Padraig Boyle added the conversion to make it 10-3.

Longford continued to play the conditions with the boot of Padraig Boyle with some intricate kicks to put the Naas back three under pressure. Longford scored an almost identical try to their first with captain Eoin Murtagh touching down with Padraig Boyle getting the extras making it 17-7 going into the second half.

Longford management freshened the side up by bringing on David Bannon and John Boyle on both of whom had particularly strong games in defence with Bannon putting in some massive shots throughout the second half.

As the second half started the rain had stopped and Longford were playing up the hill. Longford new they would face a Naas onslaught, but Longford managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over through Padraig’s boot making it 20-7. Longford’s forwards managed to win a penalty thirty-five meters out from the Naas line.  Padraig Boyle kicked his finest penalty of the day making it 23-7.

Disaster stuck for Longford as after Naas pressure on Longford’s line, Adam Glennon received a yellow for a hand in the ruck.  Longford defence held out and managed to clear their lines from the following Naas attack.

Naas did eventually cross the Longford line with a fine move after severe pressure on the tiring Longford defence.  Lolu Adejinmi swapped places with Glennon in the bin for the final few minutes after a high tackle, but Longford withstood the kitchen sink been thrown at them and the referee blew the full-time whistle and Longford were crowned Leinster Plate champions.

Special mention to Patton, Davis and Hanley in the forwards and Byrne, Jude O’Rourke in the backs who had massive games in defence and at the breakdown.

Longford: 1 Lolu Adejinmi 2 Jack Patton 3 Sam Davis 4 Ciaran McNally 5 Seamus Hanley 6 Joel Gillanders 7 Sam Mills 8 Eoin Murtagh 9 Sam O’Rourke 10 Padraig Boyle 11 Adam Glennon 12 Jude O’Rourke 13 Kevin Byrne 14 David Sullivan 15 Daniel Egan 16 Ryan Britton 17 Rokas Macevicius 18 David Bannon 19 John Boyle

Leinster Development Pathway U18 Leinster squad selection

Longford’s Yaw Appiah has succeeded in being selected for the Leinster U18 club squad.  Yaw, who attends Wilsons Hospital in Multyfarnham, plays for the club U17 team and also a regular on the Midlands development squad.  The side defeated the Leinster schools squad in a challenge game last week, demonstrating the increasing quality being produced by clubs across the province.  We wish Yaw the best of luck with the squad.

Midlands Development pathway

Longford Rugby club have an increasing number of players participating in the Leinster development pathway which commences at U16 age grade.  On the boy’s side, a total of seven players from the Longford Rugby Club are selected to participate in the summer training programme ahead of next seasons Shane Horgan Cup.  From this season’s Midlands development side, there are five players from Longford U16’s retained to continue training in the Leinster development pathway.

There are also six girls from Longford Rugby Club selected to participate at U18 in the Sarah Robinson Cup next season.

Longford U12 Girls Squad who took part in their first ever Blitz

The U12’s minis rugby season culminates with the largest blitz in the country at Seapoint Rugby Club.  Longford were well represented with both our boys and girl’s teams playing on the day. In particular, a big well done to Longford RFC U12 girls who played their first ever games of rugby in today’s blitz at Seapoint.

They played fantastically against teams who have been playing together since U8 and were well up for the challenge.

Longford Ladies Rugby

There will be a significant change for Longford women’s rugby next season as Head Coach, Nuala McGoey hangs up her boots.  Nuala retires from coaching the ladies’ team after a combined 20 years with the team as player and coach.  Nuala’s input has brought the team from strength to strength over the years and will be missed by all.

Earlier this season Nuala commented, as part of a Women in Rugby piece for International Women’s Day,

‘Getting involved in coaching was a natural decision for me.

Having played rugby for the ladies’ team for a number of years, as I was getting close to retiring, there was an opportunity for a new senior coach.  There were never enough volunteers participating in ladies’ rugby and, I felt I could give something to the team.  After some consultation and encouragement l decided to take on the role which, at the time, kept some continuity for the team.  Experience is not absolutely necessary to be involved but it does help to have the knowledge from playing.  Every day is a learning day, you are always picking up something new.

My proudest coaching moment was the team getting promoted to Division Three and then winning the plate final.

I would say that the most notable change in the ladies’ side was going from having difficulty in fielding a team to the numbers growing steadily every year.  I remember how much I had gained from playing rugby over the years and all the friends I had made, and subsequently seeing the same thing happening for other players in the team through the years is really great to see.

As a coach, there are many challenges and you end up doing everything related to the team.  Club and teams need volunteers.  I would encourage anyone interested in ladies’ rugby to get involved at the club.

Just come along and speak to coaches and club staff.  There are always lots that need doing, from taking pictures, to match reports, making tea, marking the pitch etc.  Every little bit helps, and it is always enjoyable to be involved.’

Maria Kelleher, Ladies captain commenting on behalf of the Longford Ladies team –

‘We would like to thank Nuala for all her time and commitment over the past few years.  Nuala always instilled a sense of encouragement and guidance for us players. She enabled each player to trust in their ability.  Many of the players who started rugby in recent years wished they had started sooner, which is reflective of Nuala’s hard work.  Nuala worked tirelessly behind the scenes in getting a full squad in place each year and having the admin side of the team in order.  Her excellent dedication and work has not gone unnoticed and has been appreciated by each member of the ladies’ squad.  Nuala will be missed, and it will certainly be strange her not being there going forward.  We hope she will continue to follow the team and join us at the Sin Bin for a quiet one after games.

Longford Rugby Club Vice President and Director of Ladies Rugby, Karen Lennon also said, ‘Nuala has been a constant of Longford Ladies rugby since its foundation in 2006. As a player she was a formidable opponent, and I was always glad she was on our team – she was a mighty woman to turn over a ball or nick one against the head in a lineout.

It goes without saying that women’s rugby in Longford would not be where it is today without Nuala.  When there was difficulty in finding a coach, Nuala stepped in and has driven the team to the success it is today.  There are big shoes to fill to continue with Nuala’s great work.  I would like to thank Nuala for her hard work and dedication to Women’s Rugby in Longford.’

Club President, Donagh McDonnell commented, ‘Nuala McGoey has been a huge part of our club since I have been involved.  She has put in all the hard yards both as a player and as a coach, in conditions that were often less than ideal.  Without people like Nuala, the ladies’ game would not be thriving as it is today. The club owes Nuala a huge thanks and we hope that she will stay involved even if she is taking a step back from coaching.’

All in Longford Rugby Club wish Nuala the absolute best wishes for the future and extend our appreciation for her contribution throughout the years.

U16 Midlands League Final

Longford RFC 17-36 Mullingar

Longford U16’s fell at the final hurdle of the season as Mullingar too the Midlands League title on Saturday.  Mullingar took the lead on 6 minutes wit an unconverted try.  Longford applied pressure on the visitors after the restart with good Carrie’s into contact across the park.  The hard work was rewarded with a penalty on thirty metres which yielded three points from Senan Murphy.

Mullingar went in for two more tries from Midlands players, Peader Glennon and Jake Greene, as the hosts were slow to protect their own ball and gift the opposition cheap possession from which they were clinical.

Longford did not let the heads drop and fought to get themselves back up the pitch. A sweet cross field kick for the onrushing Jonathan Groenewald almost came off and indeed gave the home side the confidence to bring the game to Mullingar.  On the cusp of halftime, the hard work paid dividends as Mark Glynn dotted down to the right of the posts.  The conversion was good to go into the break 10-17 down.

The second half went aray quite early as Mullingar scored twice in the first ten minutes to extend out to a 10-29 lead. Longford still were not done and, but for poor handling on a couple of occasions we would have been a lot closer.  However, the lads kept plugging deep in opposition territory and eventually Mullingar conceded a penalty on the try line.  The set piece move straight off the training ground went to plan and Mark Glynn was over for his second try.  Longford should have kicked on from there as the momentum was building but again when diligegence was most needed, Longford failed to retain their own possession and allowed Mullgar back in for the final score.  The team should build on the positives from this season as they have done on last season.  Two end of seasons finals has been a big step up and hopefully we can go one better next season and claim silverware.

Longford: James Cosgrove, Mark Glynn, Tadhg McCauley, Joseph Davidson, Ryan Spollen, Danny Kelly, Conor O’Grady, Aaron Hopkins, Derek Belton, Harry Byrne, Shane McGuigan, Mel Mulligan, Senan Murphy, Donnacha Golden, Tom Murray, Darragh Walsh, Jonathan Groenewald, Daniel Corr, Jamie Donohue, Jack Brogan,  Gift Orbrehor, Dan Donohue

Leinster Provincial Towns Plate

Longford’s season ended on Easter Sunday when beaten by Athy in the Provincial Towns plate.

Conditions were tricky with a stiff breeze blowing in to the Demesne end, but the promised rain held off.

Athy got off to a quick start with a penalty and try putting them ten nil up. Longford had lots of good field position but only earned three points from sustained periods of play in the Athy half. A piece of good fortune saw Athy score their next try when a mistimed pass ricocheted off the receiving players head into open country. This was a big blow, but the game looked dead before half time when weak tackling allowed Athy in off a goal line drop out.

The message at half time was to come out swinging and a 24-3 score became 24-20 with Robbie Shaw darting over from a quick penalty near the try line and Benny McManus dotting down. Ryan McHugh added the extras while tacking on a penalty in what was a faultless kicking display in tricky conditions.

Longford had the momentum and looked sure to score again with a maul trucking towards the line but were adjudged to have pulled down their own maul. Athy were delighted to get a scrum and Longford were penalised at the following breakdown losing a man to the bin. Momentum swung again and Athy moved up the field to score and put the game beyond doubt adding a further try running out deserving winners on a score line of 37-20.

It is always disappointing to lose but there is more to building a culture than results and it was especially pleasing to see four young lads make their 1sts debut with Cormac McDonagh starting at centre in what was an impressive debut. He was joined off the bench by Pete Kiernan and Eoin Murtagh in the backrow with Padraig Boyle coming on at fullback.

It will be interesting to watch the progression that all these talented lads make next season.

U16 Midlands League Semifinal

Ravens 10-14 Longford RFC

After the recent loss in the Leinster league final, it was straight back into semifinals action for our U16 side as the took on Ravens in Birr on Saturday. Having won the league fixture in a high scoring home game against Ravens earlier this season, the Longford team expected nothing less than a battle from the hosts to return the compliment and with it take their place in the upcoming Midlands League final. A battle is exactly what they got!

Ravens went straight into a forwards contest, keeping it tight, hoping to power their way to scoring. Longford defended strongly to repel the attack and drive Ravens back into their own half.

Both sides created chances with the hosts having more wasted opportunities. On 20 minutes, Ravens eventually got the opener wide on the right. Under the posts, we refocused our efforts on a kick chase tactic. The response was immediate as Darragh Walsh pounced on the loose ball from our own restart. He popped it up to an alert Conor O’Grady, who spotted a gap and accelerated through from twenty metres to score. What a response! Any confidence the home side had from their own score was just wiped out! The conversion was added to give Longford a 05-07 halftime lead.

Longford needed to up the ante in the second half. The tackle rate remained high as Ravens carried hard into our twenty-two. Longford were defending well, turning it over and clearing well with boot to ball to keep the play down field, forcing Ravens to have to start from deep again each time. Our own discipline slipped as we conceded some unnecessary offside penalties to give Ravens field position. From this they got their second score to go back into the lead. Stern words under the posts were heeded as the Longford side chased absolutely everything with Shane McGuigan, Darragh Walsh and Conor O’Grady leading the way. Jonathan Groenewald was playing more infield to offer options and Ravens were scrambling to cover the different points of attack from Longford. With five minutes remaining, Darragh Walsh took a pass outside the twenty-two, and rounded the fading defence to score Longford’s second try. Senan Murphy tagged on his second conversion and Longford were into a four-point lead.

Ravens restarted and Longford gathered cleanly. From there the boys punted back to keep play in the opposition half. In the last-minute Ravens did get to the red zone to give themselves a chance but their own indiscipline, throughout the second half, again cost them the opportunity and with it also the game. Longford take the win and earn a shot at a Midlands league title next week.

Notable for Longford were Darragh Walsh at 13, Shane McGuigan and Conor O’Grady. Danny Kelly was immense in defence while Aaron Hopkins played a blinder after a long injury layoff. Mark Glynn was excellent at hooker and Jonathan Groenewald continues to be a menace to opposing defences. Today was a team effort with only fifteen players available. Perhaps the most impressive part was that the heads never dropped and that the players found a way to win after going behind in each half.

Longford: James Cosgrove, Mark Glynn, Tadhg McCauley, Danny Kelly, Conor O’Grady, Aaron Hopkins, Harry Byrne, Shane McGuigan, Mel Mulligan, Senan Murphy, Donnacha Golden, Tom Murray, Darragh Walsh, Jonathan Groenewald, Daniel Corr

Midlands Representative teams

The U16 Shane Horgan Cup fifth round took place on Wednesday in Donnybrook. Longford were represented by four players in the Midlands side. Shane McGuigan and Jonathan Groenewald started with Mark Glynn and Senan Murphy coming in from the bench. MCGuigan was a constant menace throughout with Groenewald stretching the Northeast side on the wing. The game was secured in the second half with two quick tries from the Midlands to round off the tournament on a high.

Midlands Girls representative

The trials for next season’s Midlands Sarah Robinson squad took place last week with eight of Longford’s girls in the reckoning. All of Ava Horkan Shauna Hannon Andrea Nolan Mia Rowan Anna O’Connor Isabella Larkin Casey Foran Diana Izekor will be hoping to have the nod from the selection panel in the coming weeks.

Rugby Tour

Throughout its history, Longford RFC has been an enthusiastic host for Touring teams with in excess of 50 Clubs/sides having visited us over the years. With the huge increase in the cost of travel, the advent of professionalism and, more recently, the appearance of Covid, rugby tours (both by the Club and to the Club) have been in decline but it is something which we are keen to reverse and that process begins this coming Saturday when we host the Dunvant RFC (Wales) U15 squad who are over here on a short Easter Tour, staying in Centre Parcs.

Club Bio

Dunvant Rugby Football Club are a Welsh rugby union club based in DunvantSwansea in South Wales and are a member of the Welsh Rugby Union. They competed in the Welsh Championship for the first time in 2016/2017, but were relegated back to the WRU Division One West the same season.

No less than Longford RFC in our Community, Dunvant Rugby Club has been an important part of Community life in Dunvant, Killay and surrounding areas of Swansea West ever since it is foundation in 1887 (co-incidentally just a year before the founding of Longford RFC). Dunvant RFC are extremely proud of being the first Village Club to reach the highest echelons of Welsh Rugby, Division 1 (now known as the Premiership) using home-grown talent, before the game turned professional.

Playing much of their early rugby in the local parks, they decided in 1969 to buy thirteen acres of a local field known as “Albert’s Bottoms”, today proudly known as “Broadacre”, where they have three full size pitches, some great facilities and one of the best playing surfaces in Wales. The Club joined the West Wales Rugby Union in 1978/9 in Section E, and in only nine years rose to Section A. With the formation of League Rugby in 1990/1, Dunvant entered into Division 2 (now Div 3) and won it at the first attempt. Two seasons later in Division 2, Dunvant won twenty-one out of twenty-two games to enter the top flight Division 1 for the 1993/4 season with the giants of Llanelli, Swansea, Cardiff etc. Across their seasons in Division 1 they beat them all except Cardiff (27-27 draw) and Llanelli.  An amazing journey through eight Divisions of rugby in only fifteen years. Dunvant have even played international games against Japan in 1993 (L23-24) and Romania in 1999(L10-29).

Longford “Seal the Deal” to secure Division 1B status for next season

By Mark Quinn at North Kildare

02/04/2022 Leinster League Division 1B/2A Promotion/Relegation Playoff

Longford RFC 27 – Clondalkin RFC 16

“Fortune favours the brave” – and this has never been truer than Longford RFC’s Senior Men’s journey this season as they defied all logical odds to retain their status among Leinster Division 1B. For context, after 6 rounds of the 14 round competition format, the team sat shell shocked at the bottom of the table with no wins on the board. With 8 rounds remaining, the team had to plot a course to survival that would require a minimum of 5 wins as well as a mix of bonus points to pull off the comeback of comebacks. Last Sunday’s events in Dundalk completed the above “Houdini act”, with Longford moving off the foot of the table for the first time all season in the 3rd minute of injury time on the final day of the regular season. However, the reward was not automatic safety but a place in a once off Play Off v the 2nd placed team in Division 2A – Clondalkin RFC. This was now essentially a Winner Takes All Final.

On Sunday past, the final episode of what has been an epic script played out. The team arrived at the neutral North Kildare venue focused and determined to deliver the win required to retain their place among the highly competitive Division 1B. A large crowd was in attendance and the scene was set. In balmy Spring conditions, the match got underway to a ferocious early intensity. Both sides showed clear early intent that this was going to be a hard-won match and whoever was to take the spoils would need to earn it. It was Longford who landed the first blow on 4 minutes after a superb break from Kieran O’Gorman was initially continued by his back-row partner in crime Tom Gilheany to launch Longford deep into the Clondalkin 22. The referee signalled a penalty to Longford from the ensuing breakdown which Ryan McHugh sent straight between the posts. 3-0 to Longford and an ideal start. However, Clondalkin showed immediately from the restart that they intended to take the game back to Longford and displayed some silky phases to keep the men in black honest. Indeed, it was Clondalkin who’s efforts were next rewarded via converted penalties on the 8th and 14th minutes to swing the scoreboard 3-6 in their favour. Longford knew they were in for a battle.

To their credit, Longford immediately upped the tempo and delivered some excellent rugby in equal measure through both the Forwards and Backs. On 18 minutes it was Longford Centre, George McDermott, who took matters into his own hands to cross the Clondalkin whitewash for a crucial opening try under the posts. Ryan McHugh converted to return the scoreboard 10-6 in Longford’s favour.

Longford had to defend bravely for the following 20 minutes as Clondalkin launched wave after wave of attack in their effort to get back into the game. Rioch Farrell and Diarmuid Masterson both landed thundering hits in this period to negate the Clondalkin momentum. Both sides displayed a ferocious commitment at the point of contact, with the ball swinging from one side of the pitch to the other in a terrific high tempo. Up front it was Podge Farrell, Mark McHugh & Liam Brady who set the foundation in the set piece with David Geelan & Benny McManus leading the Longford effort in close contact open play. Packie Molloy pulled the strings at No.8 as the forwards began to dominate their opponents.

As half time approached, Colm Glynn earned a penalty for Longford after a brilliant jackal at the breakdown. Ryan McHugh converted the resulting penalty to further increase the Longford lead to 13-6. A minute later in first half injury time the Longford lead was further enhanced after a superb finish from flying winger Rioch Farrell who was put through after some blistering play from his teammates. Ryan McHugh converted to give Longford an 18-6 lead at the break.

The 2nd half opened to an erratic pattern for Longford as despite their healthy and deserved lead, the ball was not sticking with several unforced errors leading to frustration among the Men in Black. This gave Clondalkin renewed belief that they could get back into the game and to their credit they never stopped in their efforts to erode the gap built up by Longford. However, after a sustained period of pressure it was Longford who dealt the next blow on 57 minutes as they surged up field to attack the Clondalkin line. After a number of intensive phases by the forwards, it was Robbie Shaw who launched the crucial and ultimately game winning attack as the ball was swung wide through the backs. The hugely talented Bran Harte smartly fixed the last covering Clondalkin defenders before releasing Player of the Match, Rioch Farrell clear on the wing for his 2nd try of the afternoon. Ryan McHugh landed a superb conversion from the touchline to further enhance Longford lead to 27-6.

Longford had to absorb a difficult last 23 minutes from Clondalkin who threw everything they had at Longford with nothing to lose. Matters were not helped during this period by 2 yellow cards that stretched the Longford line when really the game should have been seen out. To their full credit, Clondalkin landed 2 late tries of their own to improve the score line to 27-16. Indeed, this is how it finished as the referee finally blew his whistle to the relief of all in attendance.

And so the “Great Escape” was completed. The Players, Coaches and Management deserve huge credit for their dedication and commitment to the cause this season. They never gave up and have proven many wrong this season. After a hugely character-building campaign, this squad will ultimately benefit from this journey. New players have been blooded, the overall game plan has been developed and ultimately a very unique bond has been created among this group.

Roll on next September when they will do it all again – proudly in Leinster Division 1B.

Ladies’ rugby

For Longford Ladies, the season ended in Mullingar on Friday, losing out 24 -26 to Tullamore. The ladies will remain in Div 3 going forward.

The end of the season brings with it the end of an era for Head Coach Nuala McGoey, who, after 20 odd years both playing and coaching, has decided to hang up her boots.  We wish her well and look forward to seeing her on the sidelines enjoying the game from a different perspective.

Official Opening & Dedication of Longford Rugby Club 4G

The official opening took place on Friday afternoon last with Cathaoirleach Turlough McGovern cutting the tape in front of a crowd of club members, family, and friends. The weather did not dampen the spirits and the guests enjoyed a number of speeches over lunch afterwards.  See pictures in this week’s issue.

The ceremony was preceded by the inaugural school’s tournament which is hoped to be held every year to round of the rugby activities of local schools.

Paddy Quinn, Robert Belton, Pat Fitzgerald, Ann Diffley (rep. of Mel diffley), and Warren Turner, at the official opening of the 4G pitch on Friday.  The pitch is dedicated to the five individuals, whom together have a combined 260 years committed service to Longford Rugby Club.

Longford under 18s took on Carlow in the under 18s plate semi final in Wilson’s Hospital last Wednesday night. The side met both home and away in the league with Carlow winning convincingly on both occasions. Longford have had a tough season and have taken some beatings along the way and have relied on the generosity of the under 17’s to help bolster the squad who were unfortunately cup tied for this competition. In the previous round Longford put in a workman like performance against a Raven’s team 30-5.

The much-fancied Carlow team started the game off with intent kicking the ball into the right corner pinning Longford back by winning a penalty and electing to kick to the corner instead of the taking the three points. Longford defended the lineout and maul well but struggled to exit their twenty-two and conceded an early try as the heavens opened.

Carlow continued to pile on the pressure to Longford as Carlow won an excellent 50/22 and from the proceeding lineout managed to score a try as Longford once again failed to get out of their 22 leaving the scores 12-0

Carlow’s back was up, and the wind was at their back and were getting all the breaks. They scored a third try after a knock on was missed by the official leaving 19-0. At this point the outlook was grim for the Longford side but even as results have not gone their way, they have always showed heart and great resilience throughout the season.

Longford finally got possession in the Carlow half. They started playing through some phases and won a penalty just outside the Carlow 22 and elected for a midfield scum. Longford won clean ball and Padraig Boyle passed to the mercurial Kevin Byrne who not for the first this season produced a big play and took his man on the outside and crashed over the line. Boyle made the conversion. 19-7

This Carlow side who are in the semi-finals of the premier division showed their worth and scored a fourth try to make it 24-7 to put the game out of Longford’s reach.

Longford restarted and managed to gain a lineout on Carlow’s 10-meter line. Jack Patton who had a fine game threw the ball to captain Murtagh who won clean ball and played it off the top to Sam O’rourke who then gave it to Boyle who hit the pod of Joel Gillanders and David Bannon in the centre of the park. Gillanders made a huge line break of thirty meters and gave the pass to Bannon who finished of the move excellently for the scored of the night. Boyle added the conversion to make it 24-14 at half time.

Longford started off the second half as they finished the first. Bannon, Byrne, and David Sullivan put in some big shots to put Carlow under pressure. Longford won a scrum and Murtagh picked from the base making good yardage. After some pick and goes the powerful Lolu Adejinmi crashed over the line. Boyle added the extras to make it 24-21.

The game between became a nervy one as both teams sought to find field position with Boyle and full-back Dan Egan getting the rub of the green with their kicks. Unfortunately, flanker Bannon got the bin for a high tackle, but Longford managed the card well and kept Carlow scoreless throughoutthis period.

With the game in the balance Longford played some of the best rugby they have played all year and started it throwing offloads that the Baa-baas would be proud of.

Once Longford returned to the Carlow 22 the forwards came to life going through the phases with substitute RokasMacevicius crashing over the line in his second game for the club with Boyle making it 4/4 to make it 24-28.

With 15 minutes left in the game Longford continued the attacked and Lolu was held up on the Carlow line to almost put the game out of reach. Carlow came up the pitch for one last dash at the Longford line, but the Longford defence held out with some phenomenal maul defence.

The referee blew the final whistle to the elation of the Longford supporters and management on the side lines for an upset for the ages.

Special mention to Ryan Brittion, Ciaran Mcnally and Sheamus Hanley who put in serious graft thought the game in the pack and Jude O’Rourke, Sam O’Rourke and Adam Glennon who tackled like their lives depended on it during the game.

Longford await ether Naas or Tullow in the final with the venue and date to be decided.

U17 Longford 17 – New Ross 7

The Longford U17’s have had a busy few weeks.  After a heroic display against Athy in the Leinster League Final, they had a Leinster Plate Quarter Final victory the following Saturday against an improving Midland Warriors side, to play against New Ross in the plate semi-final being hosted by Portarlington last Saturday. Victory in this game would result in a plate final against local rivals Mullingar.

The Longford lads played against the wind in the first half and the rain had just held off as the game commenced.  The men in black had fire in the belly and went straight at the New Ross defence.  Although Longford had narrowly beaten this south east team last season, the men from Tadhg Furlong’s home club had been victorious in their previous two encounters, so this was going to be a tight game. Longford kept driving forward and after 7 minutes Stephen Oates broke through a gap to score under the posts and Conor Mulligan, despite the wind, converted to put the Longford men into the lead.  Instead of inspiring then to on, the Longford team started to sit back, with some silly errors letting the New Ross lads get back into the game.

As a result of one of their attacks, Diarmuid Rawle was cogged in a very delicate place.  He came off to get some private medical attention but was unable to stop the bleeding and he was unable to apply a band aid to the area of the rupture.  He had to be replaced but hopefully he will be up to it in the next game.  Due to the lack of backs cover on the replacements, as Ronan’s mantra was “we had to adapt.”  So, Cian Gavin came on and Olan Bracken placed out on the wing. New Ross kept the pressure on and as they drove for the line they went over for their try, and they converted.  Now on the front foot, they kept pressing, they kicked over the top for James Grehan to gain procession and in the resulting ruck, as he was positioning himself on the ground and New Ross player fell on his knee and James’s day on the pitch was over.  Cathal Ghee came in to slot in, in the front row.  The lads held out through some great defensive work to finish the half with the score drawn 7-7.

After a brief half time talk where we emphasised that a loss today would mean the end of the season, the lads came out more focused, and as one supportive parent put it “they seem to have gotten their mo-jo back.”  After some great backs play called by our General Rian Browne at out half, the ball was passed by him to Diarmuid Glennon to Alex Forde, with Diarmuid on the loop causing an overlap on the wing and now with winger Christopher Trautt on the ball spinting for the line, however, the pacey New Ross full back, tackled Chris just as he was getting into his stride.  He took a hard knock when coming to the ground, so he had to be replaced by Cathal Byrne, with him coming into the front row.  But for the next 20 minutes it was a battle between two evenly matched teams. Prop Yaw Appiah switched into the backs as second centre and Alex going out onto the wing.  Longford were now camped in the New Ross 22 and with Yaw now making some great runs at their defence in his new role, the gaps started to appear.  Jack O’Hara was quick to exploit one of these gaps and as he received the ball on their twenty-two, he sprinted through one of the gaps to score.

This score was especially important, as it now meant that New Ross had to chase the game, as a draw was not good enough for them. With the “result on the day” rule meaning that, as a result of Longford scoring the first try, the game would be awarded to the Longford side if it were drawn at full time.  For the last 10 minutes, New Ross tried to get out of their half. It was difficult as Cathal Byrne, like a man processed, made some great carries, as a result of one drive New Ross got the ball and kicked for the touch, it was short, Olan Bracken retrieved the ball, ran around his defender, and went to score his try in the corner.  The ref blew the final whistle few minutes later to leave the final score at 17-7 and another final for the young Longfordians.

It was not the prettiest of games, with some basic errors being still made, our structured play still needs some work, and some “walking” at times during the game.  The forwards played well, Oran has adapted to his position as hooker, winning the scrums and throwing well in the lineout.  Yaw played his best game in the black jersey and excelled in the space when he went into the backs.  Jack and Sean Molihan were the engine house in the scrum and lifted brilliantly in the line, defensively they tackled away and carried the ball well.  John Sheridan was fantastic in the line out, being strong to say, “put me up,” on the New Ross throw in, “and I’ll take their ball” and he did.  Stephen Oates was definitely up for man of the match.  In attack, he drove straight at the opposition defence, crossing the gain line every time, and in defence, he rarely missed a tackle.  They controlled the game and showed how quick ball by Conor out to the backs can create spaces out on the wings, with Diarmuid, Rian and Alex deceiving the opposition (and some of our forwards) with their loop moves.  However, if Stephen Oates was not man of the match, then second for that accolade would be Caelum Mc Gee.  He made some brilliant cover tackles to prevent New Ross from scoring and came into the line to create overlaps, with also him covering the back field when New Ross tried to kick. The last shout out is for our three replacements, the two Cathals and Rian.  They are played brilliant when they came on and were an enormous impact on the game and showed how vital they are to have in any game.

We now are in the plate final to be played on the 22nd of April and a venue yet to be decided, in a derby against local rivals Mullingar.  It has been a good season for us, and it would be great to top it off with some Leinster silverware.  We wish our U18’s the best of luck as they made it to the plate final after a heroic victory against a fancied Carlow team, coming back for 7-24 and half time to win 28-24.  Their win, and comeback, was also an inspiration to our U17’s lads.  The U16’s are so vying in the plate with a semi-final to be played.  It is great to see so many youth teams still playing in Leinster competitions at this stage of the season.

Longford win thriller to send League comeback into final fixture of the season

By Mark Quinn at Longford Rugby Club

Leinster League Division 1B Longford RFC 20 Athy RFC 16

Longford hosted in-form Athy RFC on Sunday last in a “do or die” fixture in terms of the scramble to stay in Leinster League Division 1B. A win was simply non-negotiable and again like recent fixtures the squad depth was tested to its limit with numerous 1st squad players unavailable due to injury. The odds were stacked against the home side, but this team has an admirable “never say die” attitude and as they took the pitch a laser like focus was noticeable.

The clouds began to gather over Longford Rugby Club as the kick-off approached and on que the heavens opened as the game got underway. An immediate contest for the ball between both packs was in full swing when the sound of the referee’s whistle sounded to Athy’s benefit. A penalty was awarded just inside the Longford half which was slotted over by the Athy Outhalf. Longford were down 3-0 with 1 minute on the clock. Longford responded on 5 minutes with a well fielded ball by the excellent Ryan McHugh at fullback who ran hard back at Athy before launching a sweet spiral down into the Athy 22. Tom Gilheany led the chase and caught the defending Athy player over his own line to force an attacking 5-meter scrum to Longford. Unfortunately, the ball was knocked on in the phases that followed but the line was drawn and Athy were put on notice early in terms of Longford’s intent in the game. Indeed, from a driving Lineout maul immediately afterwards, Longford appeared to be over only for the Referee to judge Seamus McKeown to be held up.

However, on 15 minutes Longford were finally awarded for their excellent early pressure when Tom Gilheany blocked down an attempted clearance by the Athy Outhalf. As the ball spun on the turf behind the Athy try line, it was the in-form David Geelan who pounced first to secure the opening try of the game. Ryan McHugh converted to deservedly swing the scoreboard 7-3 in Longford’s favour. Athy closed the gap to 7-6 on 19 minutes after Longford were harshly penalised at a ruck. Indeed, Athy were very fortunate that the referee missed an obvious act of foul play in the same incident that really should have resulted in a penalty to Longford. However, Longford again displayed composure to secure a penalty immediately from the restart of play which Ryan McHugh landed from distance. The scoreboard moved to 10-6 to Longford.

The next eight minutes were frantic as both teams upped the tempo and landed blow after blow without breaking either line. On reflection it was perhaps the home team who were guilty of lacking the cutting edge after several visits to the Athy 22 were frustrated by either poor execution or the determination of Athy’s defence. An incident took place on 28 minutes when a Longford player was pinned to the ground after play moved on. Several Athy players took part in a scuffle with the single Longford player which really should have resulted in a penalty to Longford – however it was bizarrely Longford who were penalised when Packie Molloy was shown a very harsh yellow for simply breaking up the incident. Longford now had to weather the storm created by the 1-man disadvantage to Half Time and did so superbly. To their huge credit it was Longford who emphatically closed the first half with a statement of intent when Ali McCormack secured possession from the lineout and the excellent Mark McHugh crashed over the Athy try line off a driving maul. Ryan McHugh again converted – 17-9 to the home side at the break.

The battle didn’t lose any intensity in the second half as both sides continued to run the ball hard at each other. In the forwards Seamus McKeown, David Geelan, Kieran O’Gorman and Packie Molloy in particular were putting in huge shifts. However, it was perhaps Mark McHugh and ultimate Player of the Match Tom Gilheany who in tandem caused most havoc with ferocious intensity in their line speed and dynamic defence. The backs showed similar intensity with both Colm Glynn & George McDermott forming a very well-balanced centre partnership that was well serviced all day by a resurgent Danny McHugh at Outhalf. Ryan McHugh was imperious all game at Full Back and the ever improving Rioch Farrell has a very solid outing on the wing. It is hugely encouraging that collectively the team are playing with a far improved shape and application of the new systems introduced by coach Henry Bryce this season.

Longford were awarded another penalty on 56 minutes which Ryan McHugh sent straight between the posts to give the home side an extended, and deserved lead of 20-9. Athy did strike back however on 78 minutes with a converted try after several waves of pressure. The scoreboard moved to a dangerous 20-16 score line with what those in attendance thought was the final play of the game. The referee however indicated a restart and Athy went for broke, launching several waves of attack before thankfully they knocked the ball on. With that the final whistle sounded much to the relief of players and spectators alike – Longford had done it!

Eyes however immediately moved to events elsewhere as the result of the Mullingar v Wicklow game was eagerly awaited. Unknown to most however, that fixture bizarrely kicked off a full 30 minutes after their scheduled 3pm start time which meant that for 30 minutes nobody knew if Longford heroics on the day were going to be enough to push their fate into the final day. Longford needed Mullingar to lose in order to keep them in our sights going into the final round of fixtures on March 25th. Indeed, Mullingar took the lead in their fixture after the match had ended in Longford and the most anxious of waits began to see if Wicklow could do us a massive favour. Remarkably they did just that, taking the win in the final phase of play in that game which meant that Longford are still alive in terms of the great escape.

Longford’s final game is away to Dundalk in an absolutely must win fixture where only a bonus point win will do coupled with a Mullingar defeat in their away trip to Athy on the same day. The aim is to exchange paces with Mullingar with the potential reward a play off against the runner up of Division 2a which currently looks like being either Clondalkin or Coolmine RFC. If ever a season went down to the wire this is it. This team knows what now has to be done and are determined to do it. Never say never…

U14 Girls

Longford 36-33 Wolves

The U14 girls welcomed wolves on Saturday for what turned out to be a fantastic  game between both teams.

Wolves were quick to start but Longford were quickly able to turn over the ball.  Emma and Sydni took some big tackles and Longford slowly edged forward.  Wolves had the 1st scrum of the game and were quick to outpace the Longford side scoring the try but missed conversion.  It wasn’t long before Wolves had their second try, and this time it was converted.

The Longford girls did not give up,  and in fact were just about to start playing themselves, with Abbey chasing what was going to be Wolves 3rd try, preventing it and putting the pressure back on the visitors.  Both teams were well matched, Longford from deep and with quick hands moving the ball out the back, scored.

As half time approached the Longford  girls were not done and Lara McWeeney charged through the Wolves’ defence, Holly McKenna took it up and was stopped just short, but Avril Murtagh was there to drive over for the try.

Sydni Sheridan carrie’s for Longford U14’s

Second half the Longford girls hit the ground running with a good score & conversion.  The Wolves girls were not giving up, and they soon ran in another try of their own.  Both teams fought hard.  Nicole Charters powered her way past the defence passing the ball to Lillie Dowd crossing the line before Wolves hit back yet again.  This match was so close, Longford were behind but in the last moments Longford fought hard and were over the line and converted to claim a fantastic win.

Final score: Longford 36-33 Wolves.

Boot room

Parents – Why not check out the hugely popular Boot room here at Longford rugby club where we have a self replenishing stock of replacement boots.  You drop in a pair you no longer need and replace it with a pair that fits your child. That way your pair of boots doesn’t go to waste and someone else gets to benefit also, thus also helping someone else save a few Euros.

If you have any boots that you wish to donate or exchange, please bring them into minis training and drop off the office for the attention of Gerry Carty or Pauline Marlowe who will assist with selecting the replacement pair.  Boots should be clean, laces intact and no missing studs.  No blades will be taken in.

Please note it is not possible to guarantee there will be a suitable replacement available however we have rarely not had some to choose across a wide range of sizes.
