04/11/2018 Leinster Women’s Division 4 Longford 47 CYM 7

By Nuala McGoey Women’s Head Coach

Longford Women took on CYM at home last Sunday in perfect conditions for playing rugby.

Longford started well and within minutes of the kick off they were driving towards the opposition line. The forwards were working well together and it wasn’t long before Michelle Farrell powered over the line for a try which was converted by Megan Banahan. Longford were again on the attack but a loose pass saw the CYM No. 10 get her hands on the ball and run in for an easy try under the posts which was converted.

It was now Longford’s chance to benefit from a mistake and Rachel O’Farrell made a great break down the wing and blasted through several tackles to run in for her first try for Longford with Megan Banahan added the extra 2 points. Longford were playing really well and when Natalie O’Reilly did great work on the ground to secure the ball it was taken on by Irene Murtagh and Fidelma Fallon who both made great ground, which opened it up for out half Megan Banahan to burst through a number of tackles to score and convert her own try. The half time whistle was sounded to leave Longford ahead 21 to 7.

The second half was only a few minutes old when Longford lost a player to the sin bin for a high tackle, but this only made them more determined and almost straight away Laura Gallagher used some great footwork to avoid being tackled to run in for a try, the conversion was missed. Some more great work between forwards and backs saw the ball get into the hands of full back Rebecca O’Hara who out-paced everyone to score under the posts which was converted. Laura Cassin, Nicola Farrell and Hannah Shea were all putting in some brilliant work round the pitch and Clare Clabby was put into space down the wing but got caught just before the try line. CYM managed to clear the line but with Emma Dardis controlling things really well at scrum half and after some great off loading Maria Kelleher burst through the defensive line to sprint for the line and score which Megan converted. Next came a great team try started off with Margaret McKenna powering her way down the side-line with several CYM player trying to bring her down, the ball was quickly recycled out to the backs and then after a few forward moves Megan Banahan found space to break free and score her second try of the day, which she converted .The final whistle was sounded to leave a score line of 47 to 7.This was an all round team performance and great for building confidence within this young team. Next up is an away match to Tullamore next Sunday with a 1 PM kick off.
