Longford Ladies fall at penultimate hurdle in Plate. 2018-04-23 17:27:00

Longford ladies headed to Cill Dara to take on newly crowned league champions NW Falcons in the plate simi final. Having not had a match in several weeks this was going to take a big effort from everyone. It was very disappointing to have to be forced to play 10 a side uncontested scrums yet again. Longford kicked off against a very strong wind and put in some great early hits. But the falcons were not a team for contact and kept the ball alive as much as possible and they managed to run in a try quickly. Longford kicked off but a poor chase from the kick let the speedsters get into space again and move the ball out wide to run in another try. Longford managed to have some possession and with great pick a goes round the rucks from Irene Murtagh and Louise Hillary they started to make some ground. Rachel Mckenna managed to get over the line but was deemed by the ref to be held up .From the 5metre scrum Emma Dardis set up the ball well for the forwards to again pick and go round the corners and Fidelma Fallon powered over the line for a great team try. The conversion was narrowly missed. Falcons were almost in for another try only for a brilliant tackle from Laura Gallagher who managed to hold up the player over the line. Longford were finding it tough playing against a team of fast backs and Falcons were managing to find miss matches all over the pitch and run in trys.
With the wind at there backs longford went out in the second half with determination and it great work from forwards and backs picking and going they were close to the try line, Rebecca Duffy pumped her legs over the line to score a great try only for the ref to say it was held up. Longford managed to cross the line 5 times only for each time the ref to say it was held up when the ball was clearly grounded. Rebecca O Hara made a great break down the field and put Laura Gallagher into space and she almost got away only for a last grasp tackle. Megan Banahan and Michelle Farrell put in some serious tackles all day. The final score was 50 to 5 loss which didnt reflect the matxh at all. This was a tough match for longford to finish the season on but they can be very proud of themselves having only started playing rugby last August to finish 3rd in the division and get to a plate final is some achievement.
