Longford headed to Swords for their first match of 2018 having had the disappointment of last weeks game cancelled due to a frozen pitch. They were missing a number of key players and knew this could be a tricky away fixture. Captain Emma Dardis kicked off and with a great chase Longford put pressure on swords. Rebecca Loftus managed to rip the ball free and set it up for the forwards. Fidelma Fallon, Louise Hillary got a

few good pick and goes around the ruck and as the ball was spread out the back line Michelle and Nicola Farrell made some great breaks. Irene Murtagh picked the ball up 5 metres out and powers over for the try. Emma converts to give Longford a 7 to 0 lead.

From the kick off Longford are on the attack again but some poor work at the breakdown lets Swords steal the ball ,they quickly get it out the backs and with some terrible missed tackles they run the length of the field to score but miss the conversion. 7 to 5

Longford kick off and put good pressure on Swords and get within 5 metres of the try line but some disjointed play amongst the forwards gives Swords a chance to clear to touch. Longfords lineouts were working well with Rebecca Duffy stealing a few of Swords lineouts. Longford again are on the attack but loose the ball in contact and swords again recycle the ball quickly to their backs and again some missed tackles sees them run in a try from half way , conversion missed. Half time score Longford 7 Swords 10

Swords get the second half underway but their kick dosent go 10 metres so longford opt for a scrum on the half way line. No 8 Amanda Lennon picks from the base of the scrum and with a well worked move draws in the defender's, she passes to Rebecca O Hara who then passes to Laura Gallagher who breaks several tackles to score under the posts with Emma adding the conversion. 14 to 10

Swords kick off and Longford manage to hold possession with Maggie Mckenna Rebecca Loftus and Rebecca Duffy working hard at the breakdown. Longford put in a few good kick chases and almost get in for another try but for some good defending from swords.

Swords get a few penalties and with Longford on the back foot and with more missed tackles they run in for a try under the posts which they convert. To put them in the lead 14 to 17.

The game is on a knife edge now with only 5min left but Longford get a scrum on the 22 and another well worked move sees Amanda picking and going she passes out to Rebecca O Hara who puts the back burners on to out run everyone to score. Conversion missed. Longford 19 Swords 17.

Swords kick off with only 2 minutes remaining. Longford try to retain possession but Swords get their hands on it and break down the field. They knock it on and from the scrum Emma puts in a good kick to touch. Swords win the line out and get it out the backs but some good pressure from Longford forces the knock on and to Longfords relief the ref blows full time.

This was a good win with a depleted squad and not having had a match since early December. Longford take on a strong Tullamore side at home next weekend .
