Longford through to plate final after emphatic win 2016-04-04 13:11:00

03/04/2016 Provincial Towns Plate Quarter Final Longford 49 Newbridge 05

There may have been no silverware on offer in Longford’s clash with Newbridge on Sunday in CPL Park, but the home side certainly put in a sterling performance. The final tally of 49 points to the Kildare men’s meagre 05 indicates the command they held over the foe for the eighty minutes.

The quarter final of the Towns Plate was an opportunity to continue the exciting rugby the team had been playing in the latter part of the season without the pressure of playing league catch up.

Controlling the tempo at out half Colm Glynn put in a man of the match performance ensuring that even when the game was in the bag his players continued to play exciting and dynamic rugby.

The volume of rain that had fallen in the previous night had ensured that here was plenty of moisture on the surface.  An inspection by the ref prior to kick off passed the paddock for play.

Right from the get go Longford played with enthralling style.  The Division 2A side were unable to contain the rampant verve of a home team undeterred by the filthy conditions.

The men in black dominated proceedings by using space and spreading the ball wide at every opportunity.  By half time the Kildare outfit were eyeing the showers and the bus home.

Early tries from Dylan Quinn and Kieran Kennedy, who scored two more at second centre before the conclusion, set the tone.  Derek Farrell and captain Clifford Richardson also got their name transcribed into the permanent record when they crossed the try line.

Glynn’s 19 points, five conversions and three penalties, completed the final Longford tot.  The home team had a number of star turns.  The aforementioned Glynn, Quinn and Kennedy were ably supported by the likes of Shane Rodgers at 12.

The team now prepare for a semi final Plate contest against Tullamore.  They awaiting confirmation of the time and venue, but the likelihood is that it should be next Sunday.  Details to follow on the web.
