Longford RFC Senior Awards 2019   13/05/2019

By Tommy Butler Longford RFC PRO

Longford RFC celebrated its annual Senior Awards night on the Friday evening of the May Bank Holiday weekend.  The awards were kindly sponsored by Westward Scania.  It was proceeded by the traditional Derek Belton XV v Derek Bannon XV Memorial match, where players old and new mixed it up in a match in memory of the two players who were taken from us way before their time.  The match was played in a great spirit by a great squad of players.  The Derek Belton side won with David Bird accepting the trophy from Derek Bannon’s nephew Carl.

Immediately after the match the business of the awards got underway.  There was much to celebrate after a stellar season from the Senior Men, which saw them win the Midland League, finish second in Leinster League 1B (narrowly missing out on promotion) and reaching the Semi-Final of the Provincial Towns Cup.  The Women also had a good season where they integrated lots of new players and steadily improved.  They will be looking forward to having a good crack at the Leinster Division 4 Title next season.

First up was the most prestigious award, that of Club Person of the Year.  It was won by Padraig Murphy who was coordinator of the Minis Section of the Club this year.  He brought serious dedication and organisation to the role and organised three trips to watch Leinster play in the RDS/Aviva Stadium this year.  Over 300 travelled to the Leinster v Ulster Champions Cup Quarter Final.  Well done Padraig.

Next up was the Senior Men, the Winners on the night were Paul Gallogy as Overall Player of the Year, Benny McManus who won Players Player of the Year, Podge O’Farrell won Most Improved Player and Philly Dardis won the Early/2nd XV Player of the Year.

The Senior Women’s Awards round off the night; Rachel O’Farrell received the Overall Player of the Year Award, with Megan Banahan picking up Players Player of the Year and Nicola O’Farrell picking up the Most Improved Player gong.  A special award was given to Rebecca Duffy for Courage and Bravery in recognition of her pulling a car accident victim from an overturned car in a stream and administering CPR until the emergency services arrived.

Thanks to Matt Hanley who took pictures on the night.

So, its over and out from another Senior season in Longford RFC.  Thanks to everyone who supported us during the season.  A special mention to the dedication of all the Players, Coaches, Board and anyone who helped out in anyway over the year.  Finally, a special thanks to the Longford Leader and Shannonside FM for the great coverage over the season.  It all begins again in August.

Hot off the press; Leinster Juniors who were Captained by Longford RFCs Kieran O’Gorman won the Interprovincial series for the second year in a row when the defeated a strong Ulster side in Dundalk on Saturday past.  Well done to Kieran and the whole squad. Unfortunately, Benny McManus did not feature although selected in the squad due to injury.
