Senior Awards Night & Derek Belton/Derek Bannon Memorial Game.

The End of Season Senior Men’s/Women’s Awards and the Annual Derek Belton XV v Derek Bannon XV Memorial Match will take place on Friday May 3rd.  It is always a great night and a great way to start off the Bank Holiday weekend.  A reminder to all our past players to get the gear out of the cupboard and get it dusted down and ready to go!

The match will kick off at 8 PM, players should aim to be on the pitch for 7.30 if possible.  If you would like to play, please contact Steve Coy, Derek Belton or Damien Curley.  All players past and present are invited to play in what is always a great match.  The Awards will kick off around 9.30 PM.  There is plenty to celebrate, winning the Midland League, finishing second in Division 1B and reaching the Towns Cup Semi-Final along with the great improvement of our Women’s Squad over the season who featured a lot of new recruits.

Food will be served at the event from the Sin Bin.  The Awards night is kindly sponsored by Westward Scania.  We will have a full story on the awards along with pictures next week.

Senior Men

All eyes in Longford RFC were glued on Seapoint RFC on Saturday, where Seapoint took on Clonmel in the AIL Promotion/Relegation Playoff.  As Enniscorthy won the Provincial Round Robin and got promoted to the AIL, there was a slot left in the Division 1A of the Leinster League for next season, which would either be filled by Longford via promotion or Seapoint via relegation from the AIL.  Unfortunately, Seapoint went down to a late penalty 12-15, so Longford have to plot another campaign of rugby in Division 1B.  No doubt Head Coach Glenn Baskett and Director of Rugby Niall Moran are already hard at work preparing for next season.  If we can maintain our steady progression of Promotion from 2A, followed by third place in 1B, followed by second place in 1B this season over the last three years, then we are in for an exciting season come September.  We will be starting our build up for the 19-20 season in August!

Leinster Junior Squad

Well done to Kieran O’Gorman who captained the Leinster Juniors to fantastic 19-13 win away to Munster in the opening round of the Junior Inter Provincials in Skibbereen on Saturday.  There is lots of other Longford involvement with Damian Curley involved in team management, Blaithin Brady as Team Physio and Club President Paul Trueick as Team Doctor.  Benny McManus hopes to back in the reckoning for selection for the final two matches as he recovers from an injury sustained for Longford in the Towns Cup Semi-Final.

Midland Area Club of the Year

Longford RFC received the Midland Area Club of the Year for 2018/2019 earlier in the month as voted by the area referees.  The vote is based on the referee’s experience in the Midland clubs; being made welcome, attitude of players and captains, facilities, hospitality etc.  So, thanks to everyone involved in the Longford RFC match day experience; players, coaches, parents, groundskeepers, committees, supporters and our club members and friends.

Longford Mini/Youths

Longford Mini/Youths season is now over.  The final date for your diary Sunday May 12th in your diary as the Mini/Youth Awards take place in the club starting between 5-6 PM.

Longford Girls travel to Donnybrook

A big squad from Longford’s Youths Section travelled to Donnybrook last Friday April 26th for the first Girl only Leinster Easter Camp.  Well done to all involved, no doubt Mini/Youths Girls rugby will continue to grow in Longford RFC next season.

Minis End of Season Wrap

And there we have it. Season 2018/2019 draws to a close for Longford Minis with festivals for all teams last weekend and this weekend. We have put in a lot of training over the winter and played a lot of games both home and away, some further away than others! We had bus trips to away games which was a big part of the fun. We took large group trips to the RDS and the Aviva to support Leinster Rugby (with a couple of semi-finals to come). All in all, we have had a really great season, making lots of new friendships along the way. Here’s looking forward to next September already. Thanks a million to all players, parents, coaches, club members, committee and board for all the help throughout the season. We will regroup in August/September to do it all again.
