Match Reports

U16

Longford U16s had a tough day in Mullingar.  It was not made any easier by losing their out-half before kick off due to illness.  The U16s next cup match is away to Portlaoise in the plate with a friendly versus Carrick on Shannon next Saturday.

U14

Longford U14 boys played a home match against Greystones in the last Metro League Phase 2 Game.  It was a 12 noon start played under an overcast sky. The tempo of the game involved Greystones large forwards holding back determined runs by Longford and then using their speed in the backs to push towards Longford's try line.  The final score was Greystones 21 Longford 5. Both sides tackled well, which led to a game played mainly in the middle part of the pitch.  Big thanks to the U13's lads (Conor and Ciaran H) for supporting our team.  The player of the day was Sam Mills.  Stand out plays on the day were by Sam Mills, Adam Reen, Joel Gillanders and Leo Temple.  Shane O’Hara added to the Longford attacking threat when he came on.  Training continues this Wednesday 7 to 8:30 with the next game to be confirmed.

U12

Edenderry was the venue for the latest round of the midlands blitz on Saturday last.

Our first game was against Tullamore Team 1. We started very well with good work across the pitch in closing down the opposition. This gave us many attacking chances from which the tries were duly taken. The attitude and confidence was very good. Game two against Tullamore 2 started differently as we made some changes to the line up. We were playing very narrow and this allowed the Tullamore boys some very easy tries. It took some solid work from Jamie Donoghue and Daniel Corr to turn over some ball and get a foothold in the game.  Game 3 v Edenderry started well with some very silky ball through the hands. We took chances with tries from Harry, Daniel, Jamie and James. Strong running from Danny Kelly, James Cosgrove and Tom Murray was making the big Edenderry lads work hard for some ball. The Edenderry lads were strong in direct running too, which against the big boys was hard to defend. We showed some good tackling to keep them back but we did struggle to keep width and leaked the scores. It was a very tight affair and a score from Ryan Spollen at the final whistle earned the troops a draw.

We have a break from matches next week so back to Thursday and Sunday training.

We would like to wish a speedy recovery to both Darragh and Sean and hope to see them back soon.

Longford: James Cosgrove, Harry Byrne, Derek Belton, Daniel Corr, Senan Murphy, Jamie Donohue, Matthew Kenny, Tom Murray, Mitch Clarke, Ryan Spollen, Donnacha Golden, William McEntire, Niall Connaghton, Mikey Glennon, Danny Kelly.

U12 Girls

Longford U12 girls played three games in a blitz on Saturday in Mullingar. In the first game, Virginia were very similar to Longford making some great runs and support plays.  The game ended in a win 20 to 15 win for Longford. They next played Mullingar Red but were under pressure from the bigger more experienced side. The last game saw them playing Mullingar Greys.  They showed a big improvement in the rucks and some great forward running.  The final match ended in 5 - 0 defeat.  A great day out was had by this young side with lots more fun times ahead for them.
