Longford Women lose out on the road   16/01/2019

130119 Leinster Women’s League Division 4 Greystones 48 Longford 20

By Nuala McGoey Women’s Head Coach

Longford travelled to Greystones for the first match of 2019 minus a lot of key players knowing that this was going to be a tough fixture after the Christmas break. Longford were playing against a very stiff breeze in the first half but they started well and within a few minutes had won a penalty in front of the posts which out half Megan Banahan converted to give them a 3 nil lead. But that was as good as it got in the first half as Greystones took complete control with some very poor defending and tackling letting Greystones run in 4 tries to leave a half time score of 31 to 3.

The second half was completely different; when the Longford side retook to the field the Christmas cobwebs had been blown away. Now playing with the strong wind they went on the attack and worked their way up the field. They won a scrum just passed the half way line and scrum half Emma Dardis picked from the base, the ball was flashed out the back line and speedster Laura Gallagher couldn’t be caught to score in the corner, the conversion was missed.

From the kick-off again, Longford’s forwards were working well picking and going round the corner and some good breaks by the backs saw Megan Banahan crash over from close range to score and convert her own try.  Longford’s line outs were working well with new hooker Dora Ledwith and new jumper Natalie O Reilly combining well. However, Greystones managed to run in a breakaway try to bring the score to 38 to 13. But Longford were not finished yet and another great combination of forwards and backs building phases saw Megan Banahan burst through for another try which she converted. Greystones ran in a couple of tries as the Longford legs were tiring with only one sub on the bench. This was a tough day out for Longford but with a lot of players having to play out of position.  However, they can be very proud of their second half performance.
