Longford U10s in action

Senior Men

Longford Senior Men had the Bank Holiday weekend off and welcome Tullow next Sunday, November 4th to CPL Park on the back of two great league wins in Dublin versus Monkstown and DLSP, which continued their great start to the league making it ‘4 from 4’ along with 2 four try bonus points.  Longford have played Tullow frequently over the last few years and in the mould of their flow clubman; Sean O’Brien, they are perennially tough opponents.  Meetings between Longford and Tullow are normally high octane physical matches decided by a single score and are gripping spectacles well worth attending.

The last Late XV match versus Tullow was at home in CPL Park in March and was Longford’s last home game of 17-18 Leinster League, where they finished in third place following their promotion the season before as Champions of Division 2A.  Like this season’s last two fixtures, Longford went behind early and had to come back twice before securing a hard fought 25-15 win with tries from Derek Farrell, Lorcan Connolly and Colm Glynn.  In the reverse fixture in Tullow earlier in the season, Longford lost out by the narrowest of margin 23-22.  Similar to the Late XV, it was honours even in last seasons league for the Early XV, where they scored a superb away win in Tullow but lost out at home.

Overall, Longford will need to be at their best to overcome Tullow who tend to prove a more challenging proposition as the season progresses.  Coach Glenn Baskett will be looking for a committed week of training as there are plenty of things to work on despite the great start to the league.

Kick offs move half an hour back in November, so the Early XV match will kick off at 13:00 and the Late XV at 14:30.  All members, friends and supporters of the club are asked to turn out in force as the lads look to continue their fantastic start to the season.

Match reports

Longford U14/U18 Ladies

The U18's Ladies travelled to Edenderry for the very first friendly game for them as a team. They played extremely well and with a great attitude; Annmarie Murphy, Olivia Mollaghan and Eliza Boyle scoring.

Our U14's also travelled to Edenderry for the first friendly game of the season. The game started and finished at a high tempo and it was a cracker to watch.  Keelin Byrne putting in some try saving tackles. Scores came from Keelin Byrne, Ashling Brown, Dervela Walsh, Emily O’Reilly, Grace McEvoy and Eileen Boyle.

Longford U14

The U14's lads played their first Midland League match on Friday Night. Once again supported by the U13's, they combining well as a team. Conditions were perfect for a game played under lights. We met a very well structured Tullamore team that brought our group their first loss of the season; a 07-48 loss. Our try came from a spirited run by Shane O'Hara. That said, Longford played well and never gave up even when the lights went out mid-game!  The second time it happened we moved to the practise pitch (thanks to the girls for allowing us to stop their training so we could continue the game). We were impressed by both the attacking and defensive game that Tullamore brought and also with Longford for never giving up. From tackling to running the ball straight up the centre with supportive runners. Showing great heart on the night were Connor Milligan, Shane O'Hara and Ryan D'Arcy who continued to play through bruising tackles and knocks.  The next match is set for this weekend away to Mullingar.

U7-U12 Blitz

It was a very busy weekend for Longford Mini/Youths. Longford Minis right from U7-U12 hosted Cavan in CPL Park on Saturday. There was a great turnout from player, parents and supporters.  It was a chilly morning but luckily remained dry for our matches. The Hugh Connolly youth centre was to full capacity afterwards as we had a great spread laid on for both clubs.  Thanks to our kind parents for contributions and helping out. Thanks to the ladies team members who gave their time to help cover some of the younger teams. Thanks to the Cavan Minis for visiting and we hope to see you soon in Swellan Park for the return fixture.
