Longford remained top of Midland League Group A with one match to play after a convincing win in CPL Park on Sunday past.  Tullamore’s Junior side generally provide a stiff challenge but the match was put to bed, by half time, by a Longford side who were very clinical especially in the first half.

Like versus Edenderry earlier in the week, Tullamore exerted the early pressure.  However, the Longford defence held firm.  They then worked themselves up the pitch via Tullamore conceding three penalties, which resulted in a kick into the corner.  The resultant line out allowed Longford to set up an irresistible rolling maul with Podge O’Farrell claiming the try and Ryan McHugh converting to leave the score 7-0 after seven minutes.

Longford continued to exert plenty of pressure and added another converted try after fourteen minutes.  Great play between the forwards and the backs saw Sean McGuinness crossing over in the corner.

The rest of the half was dominated by Longford, although Tullamore had a few promising chances that were quickly snuffed out by the Longford defence.  Longford finished off the half with aplomb with Derek Farrell crossing after thirty minutes and Paul Gallogly crossing on the stroke of half time to leave Tullamore really chasing the game in second half 26-0.

The second half saw Tullamore considerably lift their performance.  Indeed, Tullamore will feel unlucky not to have scored with persistent handling errors letting them down.  However, this should not take from the Longford defence, which was impressive all day.

Indeed, Longford will feel that they should have completed 4-5 line breaks but were guilty of over complicating things at crucial times.

In spite of this, Longford finished off the match as they started, notching up two tries in the final ten minutes via Liam Brady and Shane Rodgers to leave the score at 40-0.  It was an excellent day from the tee again for Ryan McHugh, knocking over 5 out of his 6 shots on goal.

Overall, head coach Glenn Baskett, will be happy with this week that saw his side scoring 87-10 and notching up two wins.  However, there is still plenty to work on with the start of the Leinster League v Coolmine in two weeks times.

Our final Midland League fixture is at home to Mullingar in CPL Park next Sunday at 3 PM.  Please come down to support.
