Match Reports;

U16 Midland League Longford U16 26 Edenderry 28

Longford began this year’s Midland League with a narrow two point loss to old foes, Edenderry, but there were certainly a number of positives taken from the game, in particular the introduction of three newcomers to the squad to League action and some excellent handling across the back line which yielded a number of well worked tries. Unfortunately, old failings from last year resurfaced, repeated transgressions at the breakdown contributing to a penalty count significantly in the visitor’s favour and two missed straightforward first up tackles which directly led to two converted tries. If Longford are to have any hope of progressing this season then they need to eliminate the concession of needless penalties and make sure that the first tackle of the player in possession is executed properly.

Longford opened the game brightly, keeping the big Edenderry pack on the move, and all the play was in the visitor’s half of the field. Having taken play through a couple of phases Seamus McKeon set the platform for the opening score with a typical barnstorming run through to the middle and when the ball was moved wide Daire McManus used his strength to muscle his way over wide on the left. The big Edenderry pack used their superior bulk to good effect with two tries from tap penalties either side of a second try from McManus to leave the score at 14 – 12 in favour of the visitors at the break. Indeed, Longford could and should have been ahead at the interval but right at the death a try was disallowed by the referee when he penalised Longford’s ball carrier for leading with the elbow.

Edenderry stretched their lead after just four minutes play in the second half when a non-existent tackle was ruthlessly punished and matters went from bad to worse after 17 minutes play when yet another missed tackle allowed the visitors in for a second converted try beneath the posts to leave the scoreline at 28 – 12. In fairness to Longford they rallied well and scored two cracking tries in the last four minutes, both the product of slick and decisive handling, the first by Ultan O’Sullivan, the second by Seamus McKeon. With Ben Carthy adding the extra points from the two conversion attempts there was just a score between the sides but time was up immediately after the second conversion was taken.

Particularly prominent for Longford were Seamus McKeon who is showing the benefit of summer coaching with the Midlands squad, Andres Borrajo Mera, all the way from Spain and a is newcomer to the club, Ciaran Shannon who led from the front with a high tackle and ruck cleanout count and Jack Finn, another newcomer to the game.

Squad:

Gary Kenny, Ciaran Shannon, Dylan Fay, Conor Cox, Ciaran McCormack, Ben Carthy, Ultan O’Sullivan, Daire McManus, Thomas McDermott, Jack Finn, James Doyle, Charlie Patterson, Andres Borrajo Mera, Frank Patterson, Seamus McKeon, Jamie Beirne, Killian Rawle, Maksymilian Napieralaski, David Sweeney.
