DUNDALK WIN TOWN’S CUP FOR FIRST TIME

Though, they did not succeed in crossing their opponents’ line, there was no question as to the superiority of Dundalk over Longford in the final of the of the Provincial Towns’ Cup, played prior to the Leinster Senior Cup Final, at Lansdowne Road on Saturday. Their winning margin was made up of a dropped goal and a penalty goal, and this is the first time they have won the trophy.

Dundalk had very much the better of the play territorially, and up to a point their team work was above the average seen in these matches, but there was a slowness in execution which foredoomed their movements to failure. The slippery state of the ground and the ball must also be taken into consideration. Collectively, their forwards were faster and cleverer, but the opposition fought back in fine style, and three or four individuals did great work in the loose and in tackling.

Dundalk were much better served at half, where W. Jennings and Riordan combined well, and were useful individually, but the former was inclined to overdo the short kick ahead, and owing chiefly to the steadiness of the Longford full Duncan, nothing ever came of this manoeuvre. The centres were slow at parting with the ball, but

R. Jennings were at times resourceful, though finishing weakly. J. Jennings, at full back, gave a stylish and very sound display. There was little attempt at combined play by the Longford backs, but they gave nothing away in defence. Duncan, at full back, under pressure most of the time, was exceptionally good in fielding and in positional play, but his kicking was short. Both centres tackled and kicked well.

Dundalk did nearly all the attacking in the first half but without ever really threatening to cross their opponents’ line. They had chances of scoring from free kicks, and

J. Jennings twice sent wide from rather easy positions, but early in the second half he made amends by turning one to account and near the end he dropped a clever goal.

The Provincial Towns Cup finalists were unlucky to have the worst of the weather at Lansdowne Road on Saturday, and several heavy showers undoubtedly made the ground treacherous and the ball hard to handle.

Under these circumstances the play was largely of the kick and rush variety: but Dundalk, who won by a penalty and a dropped goal (7 points) to nil, would probably have been the winners under any conditions.

BROTHERS JENNINGS OUTSTANDING

The Northern side had a faster and better balanced back division, with a clever pair of half-backs and centres, who were not afraid to try for openings. The three Jennings and Riordan were the outstanding men. Longford were slower all round behind the scrum, and the forwards did not scrummage as well as the opposing eight.

Dundalk had all the better of the exchanges in the first half, but could not pierce a sound defence and were over-fond of the kick ahead. J.Jennings, the full back, gave Dundalk the lead with a penalty kick, and five minutes before the end, the same player, lying well up during a Dundalk attack, dropped a goal to clinch the tussle.
