Match Reports

U-14 Leinster League Longford 29 Navan 22

Intensity was the bellow before the game and so it was to prove as Longford took to the pitch at Navan, a ground where many Longford dreams have lain shattered. But today would not be that day!

The men in black set the tempo and with ball in hand probed and prodded against a very organized home defence. Fierce tackles from the Navan men were rebuffed and swatted confidently and phase play saw a gap for Josh Sorohan to exploit, being dragged down with ten metres to go. Support was immediately on hand, though, and Ronan Kavanagh powered over to cross the whitewash. A well-deserved try for the visitors and for Ronan. Navan reacted to the challenge and, using their power and guile, and with their hands on the ball, worked their way up the field, to touchdown twice and lay down the challenge that this was their field. Challenge accepted, and again Longford went through the phases, and with Navan being penalised consistently at ruck time, Kola Adejinmi stood gladiatorially tall and took on the hordes. Fly-half Josh Sorohan picked a pop from scrum-half Dylan Reilly & powered in the corner, to leave it 12-12 at half-time.

If the first half was taut, the second was nail-biting. Longford picked up where they left off and again probed around the fringes, working the phases with a sweet burst from Center Cian Sutton to add another seven. Backs swapped with forwards seamlessly, little pop passes pulling Navan left and right. The Longford defence was on top; second row Jack Linnane mopping up everywhere and Ronan Kavanagh and Oisin O’Toole dragging down men twice their size. The lineout performed like clockwork, and the returning effervescent James Brady , replacement at hooker, kept the scrum solid. Tries were exchanged as Aaron Oates blitz down the right wing was cancelled by a Navan score of their own to leave it 22-17, a very uncomfortable lead.

However, Longford raised to another level; disciplined with the ball in hand worked their way to the Navan 10; a storming run by flanker Jason Glancy swatting all before him, gave the visitors as twelve point cushion. Navan were riled and took the game by the scruff and despite gallant defence, worked their way to eight metres out, spread it wide and, despite the attentions of the backline touched down in the corner to secure a losing bonus point.

We’ve said before that each week we can see the lads continue to scale new heights. Communication, support, discipline and teamwork is the foundation of this great squad, and with Birr to come in the final round of the league, these boys are certainly in the mix for the League. On any other day, the performances of Jack Linnane and Ronan Kavanagh would have won them man-of-the-match, but it has to go to a man who has terrorized defences all season; terrorized his coaches, and without doubt next season will be terrorizing all at Midlands level, but is the lightning rod for the team, the mercurial Josh Sorohan.

Squad: Aaron Oates; Ronan Kavanagh; Kevin McDonagh; Jack Linnane; Rory Maguire; Mark Bracken; Jason Glancy; Kola Adejinmi; Dylan Reilly; Josh Sorohan; Niall Sheridan; Cian Sutton; Oisin O’Toole; Cormac McDonagh; Owen Harkin; James Brady; Padraig Sheridan; Aaron Gilna; Patrick Connaughton.
