Match Reports

Longford U15 03 Wexford 05

In a game which was dominated by defence Longford momentarily switched off at the death to concede a late, late try in losing their first outing in this year’s Leinster League Division One. Apart from this one blemish, it was a tremendous performance against a side who plied their trade in the Premiership last year and who defeated Longford 22 – 10 in the final of the U14 Plate last May in Donnybrook. It was a game which Longford could, and should have won based upon territory and possession but it you don’t take your chances when you have the upper hand territorially you can’t really complain if the result doesn’t go your way.

There were very few clear try scoring opportunities for either side. In the first half Longford enjoyed a significantly greater level of territorially advantage but a couple of rushed plays and unforced errors proved their undoing when, with a little more composure, the scores could have come. That Wexford were pinned in their own half for long periods was down in no small measure to a monumental display of tackling by Jamie Byrne who gave a quite awesome display over the 80 minutes but he wasn’t alone in this department, considerable assistance coming from, in particular, Ciaran Shannon and JJ Jackson.

In attack, Longford’s biggest threat came from Daire McManus and even though he frequently broke the first and second tackle, some good defensive work from the Wexford defenders eventually brought him to ground. Given that much of the game was dominated by the two defences there was little opportunity out wide but Kieran Reen continues to improve with every game and posed a threat on the few occasions he did receive possession in open space. Up front, honours were fairly even although Longford certainly had the edge in the scrum, despite being down three regular props.

With neither side able to carve out a significant try scoring opportunity it was not until the 15th minute of the second period that the first score of the game was registered, a penalty kick to Longford straight in front of the posts. Wexford were to have the last say, however, a needlessly conceded penalty in the Longford 22 giving the visitors an opportunity for a quick tap penalty and when Longford failed to close down the space some good handling by the Wexford back line yielded what turned out to be the winning score.
