Match Reports

U12 Blitz – Cavan

U12s visited Cavan on Saturday last thinking we would take advantage of the good weather! Unfortunately, Saturday morning turned into one big deluge of rain.

However, the 19 hardy souls were divided into two teams, with the two matches played in quick succession due to space restrictions in Cavan. Team 1 wasted no time worrying about getting saturated from head to toe and stuck to their task in hand by quickly racing into a lead which was not relinquished. One worried did we split the Longford teams unevenly until Team 2 took to the field and allayed all concerns. Buoyed up by Team 1's success, Team 2 were out of the traps quickly. While the deluge of rain continued, Team 2 seemed to be oblivious to the conditions and showed some deft handling skills to play an attractive offloading game which Cavan's Team 2 were simply not able to live with. 2 -0 to Longford.

The season has just begun!! Hardy wingers these Midlander's.......

U16 Leinster League

Longford U16 17 Birr 19

Last Saturday’s game was definitely a game of two halves; Longford dominated the first half when spectacular plays and tackles from Ben Victory, David Connolly and Jack Finnegan created two opportunities for Gareth O’Hara to score two tries on the 16th and 27th minute of this game. Simon Moorehead duly converted one of the two tries.

Throughout the first half the two teams measured up their skills and physicality in a series of lineouts and scrums and I would say they were evenly matched while Longford finished the first half with 12 points on the scoreboard versus 0 for Birr.

As soon as the second half started, Birr were focused on gaining possession and were able to win the ball on several occasions. Longford continued to hold a defensive line and after seven phases and on the 37th minute, Birr scored their first try. A conversion followed.

Longford understood that this game was far from over and they saw Birr continuously attacking and winning the ball both at lineouts and scrums. Craig Gorman and Ciaran McGlynn put in a fantastic performance as did Daniel Reilly.

On the 49th minute, Dario Cigliano intercepted a Birr pass and scored the third try for Longford. This brought Longford to 17 points and Birr 7.

The game was far from over, Birr attacked with everything they had and as a result Birr scored two more tries and a conversion.

Overall Birr were the better team on the day, it was a pleasure hosting them in Longford and we look forward to meeting them again. Next, the team will travel to Portarlington on Saturday 22nd of October for the second game of this season.
