Match Reports
U15 Midland League
LONGFORD U15 05 EDENDERRY 36
Longfordâs Under 15s suffered defeat at the hands of Edenderry in the first round of this yearâs Midland League but, in fairness, the score line did not reflect the work rate and commitment of the Longford players against the much bigger and heavier Edenderry pack. Indeed, for the first 25 minutes or so Longford gave as good as they got, particularly up front, and were actually somewhat unfortunate to concede a try just before the break at a time when they were down to 14 players, James Doyle having suffered a nasty enough injury which will likely knock him out of action for a few weeks. Against Monivea the previous week Longford were slow to commit numbers to the breakdown but there was a marked improvement this time around. Not alone was there a greater numerical commitment the work rate at the breakdown was improved despite the huge physical disadvantage. Among those who showed great commitment was Joshua Gray who was playing his first game of the season having missed the entire of last season.
At the break it was all to play for with only a single try between the sides but, having lost James Doyle in the first half the injury count increased with Ben Carthy, Jamie Byrne and Matt Steadman all forced to leave the field through injury. Edenderry tightened the screw as the game moved on using their bigger physique to great effect, a number of tries coming as a result of recycled ruck ball. Longfordâs sole consolation was a try for JJ Jackson following good handling in what were wet and mucky conditions. By this stage the score line was 17 â 5 to the home side and Longford were still very much in the game. It was only as the clock wound down, however, that Edenderry eventually extended their advantage on the scoreboard. While Edenderry definitely deserved their win the score line was somewhat flattering and did not do justice to the commitment and work rate on the part of the Longford players.
Next week, Longford are a home to Mullingar in the second round of the League.
